The IBM U.S. retail index shoes the pandemic has accelerated the move toward online shopping by five years.The National Retail Federation predicts that 60 percent of holiday shopping with be done online this year, up from 56 percent in 2019.“Our buying patterns have shifted almost entirely online over the last 9 months,” Duber-Smith said. “So many more goods and services are now available online. So many more than even a year ago, so I think consumers have a lot more choices that they can send.”However, the flower bouquets and gift cards can seem impersonal.“I really think all bets are off during the pandemic, but there’s going to be lasting effects in consumer attitude and behavior going forward,” he said. “Getting a gift basket that may or may not have a holiday greeting on it is becoming the norm.”“It’s an hour of work to send someone a gift,” Edward Lando, co-founder of Goody Technologies, said. “If you think about it, you need someone’s address. You need to pick out a gift. You need to make sure if you can add a note. You need to make sure it can get there on time, all that stuff.”Lando played a role in creating a solution to the problem by creating Goody, a gifting app that lets you send someone a gift in seconds. All you need is a phone number -- no address.“It’s not a normal form of buying something online, and it's not only e-commerce. It’s like a messaging experience,” Lando said.The app gives the gift recipient the whole experience of opening a gift virtually -- and the ability to swap out a gift for one of similar value if the recipient doesn’t like it. It also speaks to the need for the gratification the gift giver gets.“There's a huge psychological component to gift giving,” Duber-Smith said.“When you send a gift to someone and they open it, you get a little notification that says, ‘Melissa opened your gift,'” Lando explained. “And then you get another one that says she accepted your gift and added a note.”Gifting trends are also shifting to more experiences. “Those are the things that are more personal than gift cards because you understand what the consumer likes,” Duber-Smith said.And it’s something you can give this holiday season that doesn’t require shipping. “2021 could be the year for experiences as sort of everyone gets out,” he said.As you shop for your last minute gifts this week, consider how you’re shopping. “I think what it did is it exposed how important e-commerce is to everyone,” Duber-Smith said. 3101

Teachers across the U.S. have had to educate in completely new and challenging ways this year, with some teaching in-person and others instructing from home.“Right now, they are being asked to do the unimaginable and the impossible,” said shea martin, a former educator. “Whether that is teaching in-person during the pandemic or trying to navigate teaching at home with limited resources.”martin left teaching before the pandemic because of the demands and pressures placed on teachers even then. martin simply couldn’t imagine teaching now, with the additional load teachers are being asked to carry. Recently, though, martin created The Anonymous Teachers Speak Project, a blog allowing current educators an online platform to freely speak about what they are going through.“A lot of teachers work in districts and working spaces where they are under contract and cannot share or publicly talk about what is happening with them,” said martin. “That’s an extra burden they have to carry.”With anonymity, roughly 1,000 teachers have posted and participated in the project.“I think that I have read and seen some of the most heartbreaking stuff I have ever seen in my life,” added martin.Many teachers from around the country have posted to the project, writing about safety concerns while teaching, being overworked and over-worried about their students. Some even write about coming to terms with leaving the profession.“Teachers are crying out for help and the profession, and the district, and the schools, and the structures, are ignoring them,” said martin. “I hope it doesn’t happen, but I think we are going to lose a whole generation of teachers.”According to a report recently released by Horace Mann, a company focused on investing and insurance for educators, 27 percent of teachers surveyed--or more than 1 in 4 teachers--are currently considering quitting.“The fact that a quarter of teachers are considering leaving and the fact that there is already a shortage of teachers in the profession, just really make that even more so magnified,” said Tyson Sanders, who is with Mann. “Three out of four teachers are not living comfortably, so if there is an opportunity to be involved in the profession they are so passionate about and continue to help students, I think it is something they will certainly explore.”That seems to be exactly what is happening, especially with teachers overwhelmed in the public-school space. More and more educators are starting to turn to online teaching opportunities with private companies. Ten people have died after a Florida nursing home failed to evacuate its residents, who suffered for days in oppressive heat with no air conditioning after Hurricane Irma, according to the Hollywood Police Department.A 93-year-old man died on Tuesday, and a 94-year-old woman died on Wednesday -- adding to eight who were found dead last week at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, or who died after being evacuated to a hospital.The exact causes of death have not been reported, but a number of the 141 residents who were evacuated were treated for heat-related issues. An ongoing criminal investigation is underway.Nursing home residents sweltered in hazardous conditions after Hurricane Irma, which felled a tree that knocked out the transformer powering the air conditioning system. Many were moved into the hallways, next to fans and spot coolers. One video obtained by CNN shows a naked woman sitting in the hallway on what appears to be a hospital bed.Despite multiple calls between the nursing home and state authorities, at no time did the nursing home report that their patients were in danger or that they needed to be evacuated, according to a report on Tuesday by Florida Governor Rick Scott's office. The state advised managers "multiple times" to call 911 if such a situation arose."Something they failed to do," the 159-page report said."This facility is failing to take responsibility for the fact that they delayed calling 911 and made the decision not to evacuate their patients to one of the largest hospitals in Florida, which is directly across the street," Scott said in a statement.Last week, the nursing home expressed its sympathy for the families of the deceased and said it is "fully cooperating with all authorities and regulators to assess what went wrong."
