A Florida sheriff's deputy who worked at a school for children with emotional and behavioral problems is facing a felony charge after video shows him slamming a female student to the ground after she tapped his knee with her foot.Broward County Deputy Willard Miller was charged Tuesday with felony child abuse without great bodily harm for the Sept. 25 altercation. Sheriff Gregory Tony suspended him without pay until internal disciplinary procedures are complete.School security video shows Miller standing and texting inside an office at Cross Creek School when the 15-year-old walks behind him and uses her left foot to push the back of his right knee, causing it to buckle. She walks away.In the silent video, Miller can be seen speaking to the girl for just over a minute from about 10 feet (3 meters) away while two women watch. He then suddenly walks toward the girl, grabs her throat and throws her to the ground. He flips her onto her stomach, puts a knee against her back and pulls her arms behind her.He then forcibly lifts her up using her pinned arms and throws her out of the room, where an investigator's report says she slammed against a wall.Tony would not say what Miller and the girl said to each other after the knee tap, but he said nothing the girl said or did justified the 38-year-old deputy's actions. Miller is black and the girl appears to be white or Hispanic. It was at least the fifth time this year that a Broward deputy has been accused of excessive force. Two deputies are awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges after a teen was beaten and pepper-sprayed outside a McDonald's last spring.Last week, Tony fired a deputy who has been charged with slugging a suspect who was handcuffed to a hospital bed. A jail deputy was fired earlier this year for punching a handcuffed prisoner.Tony replaced former Sheriff Scott Israel earlier this year after Israel was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who accused Israel of bungling the response to the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead. The Florida Senate last month upheld Israel's removal, overriding the recommendation of its investigator who said Israel's conduct had not warranted suspension. The Broward school district said in a statement that district investigators notified the sheriff's office after learning of the altercation and "we appreciate the quick actions of the Sheriff's Office."The district said it is conducting its own investigation to ensure its policies and procedures were followed. It couldn't be determined if Miller has an attorney and he does not have a listed phone number. Tony said Miller had no previous disciplinary record during his three years of employment. The Broward deputies union did not immediately return a call seeking comment. 2787

A group that raised millions of dollars in a GoFundMe campaign says it has broken ground on a project to build its own stretch of border wall on private property. We Build the Wall, a group founded by a triple amputee Air Force veteran, said in a series of social media posts on Monday that it had started construction on private property in New Mexico. The announcement comes months after the group began its GoFundMe campaign to raise private donations for a border wall, and days after a federal judge blocked President Donald Trump from tapping into billions in Defense Department funds for his administration's wall construction efforts."Buckle up, we're just getting started!" the group wrote in a Facebook post, sharing what it said were images of construction over the weekend. On Monday evening, a CNN team watched as heavy machinery rumbled over the site near the New Mexico-Texas state line near El Paso. Kris Kobach, former Kansas secretary of state and longtime immigration hardliner, spoke to CNN over the clanking and beeping of construction equipment."It's amazing to me how crowdfunding can successfully raise a lot of money, and how many Americans care about this," said Kobach, who's now general counsel for We Build the Wall.A half-mile stretch of wall on the site is nearly finished, Kobach said, costing an estimated million to million to build. The main contractor working at the site: Fisher Industries, a North Dakota-based company that President Trump has been aggressively advocating should be awarded government contracts to build the border wall, 1592
A former Disney Cruise Line employee is accused of molesting a 10-year-old boy in the children's center on board a cruise ship that sets sail from Port Miami.According to his arrest report, 24-year-old Oliver Lovatt is a youth entertainment host on the Disney Magic. The alleged victim said he was playing inside the Oceaneer Kids Lab on the ship on April 28 around 10:30 p.m.During a game that involved the 10-year-old getting blindfolded and spun around several times, Lovatt "fondled the victim's [private parts] outside of the clothing," the arrest report stated.Later, during another game, authorities said Lovatt was sitting next to the alleged victim and moved his hand toward him."The victim, in fear the defendant would fondle his [private parts] again, proceeded to cover his genital area," according to the arrest report. Lovatt "proceeded to place his hand over the victim's hand, attempting to fondle his [private parts] again."Authorities said surveillance video inside the children's center captured both incidents.According to his arrest report, Lovatt confessed and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation.A spokesperson for Disney released this statement about the arrest: 1291
