SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego resident was extradited back to the U.S. to face terrorism charges in federal court.Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, a 34-year-old Canadian national, appeared in court Friday on charges that he conspired with several other Canadian and U.S. citizens to provide material support to terrorists in Syria.Prosecutors said Douglas McCain, known as the first American to die fighting for the Islamic State in 2014, was among those Abdullahi conspired with between 2013 and 2014.Prosecutors say Abdullahi and co-conspirators provided personnel and money to individuals engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, including the killing, kidnapping, and maiming of persons. Officials added that Abdullahi facilitated the travel of at least three Canadian nationals and two U.S. citizens to Syria to join and fight with ISIS.Those individuals were reportedly later killed fighting for ISIS.As part of their plans to provide financial support, Abdullahi's co-conspirators encouraged others to commit crimes, such as theft, prosecutors say. Abdullahi is charged with committing an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Canada to finance travel."Terrorist networks like ISIS cannot exist without supporters," said U.S. attorney Robert Brewer. "Protecting Americans from terrorists is our highest priority, and we will work hard to bring justice to those who provide material support to foreign terror organizations."Abdullahi was detained and deemed a flight risk and danger to the community following his hearing Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A coalition of groups protesting how law enforcement officers use force says it plans to launch a recall effort against San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan in 2019."You're going to see us all over this county," said Oletha Wade-Matthews. "We're not going anywhere until we see justice, or get you out of office."Around one dozen people gathered Downtown Tuesday to speak at a San Diego City Council meeting, then hold a press conference. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based owners and operators of the conservative One America News Network filed a million defamation lawsuit Monday against MSNBC and political commentator Rachel Maddow for saying on air the network ``really literally is paid Russian propaganda.'' The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court by Herring Networks Inc., owners of the One America News Network -- or OAN -- calls Maddow's on-air statements ``utterly and completely false'' because OAN ``is wholly financed by the Herrings, an American family'' and ``has never been paid or received a penny from Russia or the Russian government.'' Maddow and MSNBC could not immediately be reached for comment. Maddow made the statements during a July 22 segment of her show, in which she cited a Daily Beast article stating that an OAN on-air reporter was ``on the payroll for the Kremlin.'' Herring Networks' court papers say the reporter, Kristian Rouz, is originally from the Ukraine and started his journalism career by writing articles for Sputnik News, which is affiliated with the Russian government. According to Herring Networks, Rouz was merely a freelancer for Sputnik who selected his own article topics for submission, and his work there had no significance toward his work for OAN. OAN demanded a retraction of Maddow's statement, according to the suit, which says that an attorney for NBC Universal refuted that Maddow's use of the word ``literally'' was not simply a figure of speech. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado gym is taking on a novel concept, devising a bracket-style challenge involving acts of kindness.Founder Nick Merrill grew up on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, Washington and giving is in his blood. Merrill said his dad was a founder of Hearts and Hammers, a non-profit that helps build homes for those in need.After college he met his wife, who shared his love of fitness. "I met my wife through working out, we started running marathons together and ended up doing some charity runs where we ran across Washington State where we earned a bunch of money for some charities in Africa, built a school, built some wells," Merrill said.Naturally when they opened the doors of Sweat Equity in Bellevue six years ago, they wanted to marry their gym with good deeds. They opened their Coronado gym about two years ago.Every year they have challenges to engage their members. Each March, they play off of the NCAA's March Madness bracket competition.Each team of four earns points through workouts and "each round will have a specific random act of kindness that everyone will do," Merrill said that will earn them points as well.In years past, it's been anything from buying a cup of coffee for someone, to putting change in an expired parking meter. One year they flexed their giving muscles pretty hard, "we brought in over 2,000 lbs of food basically in one day." Merrill said that was for Northwest Harvest in Washington.This year they hope is their biggest year yet."It's so rewarding, it makes you feel so good and it makes the person you helped out feel so good," Merrill said.The competition starts March 16 and ends April 1, with the winner receiving a trophy for their efforts. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 19-year-old Arizona student has been arrested and now faces animal cruelty charges after police say he abused his emotional support dog.Netzer Villagomez, a student at Grand Canyon University, was arrested Sept. 22 after an Arizona Humane Society Animal Cruelty Investigator responded to reports of animal abuse involving a pug named Miso, an emotional support dog.Miso was examined by an AHS veterinarian, who said she found two fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis, and fractured tooth. Blood work also revealed elevated liver values indicating acute injuries.Police said Villagomez admitted to hanging Miso by its collar and leash, with all four legs off the ground, on two occasions for several seconds each time. Police say he also admitted to harming the dog on purpose.Villagomez sent photos of the reported abuse to another person, police added.Villagomez has been charged with Animal Cruelty, which went from a Class 6 to Class 5 Felony in Arizona last August. This means that such crimes cannot be dropped to a misdemeanor and may included jail time or supervised probation or treatment, according to the law. He's the first person to be arrested under the new penalties.Grand Canyon University released a statement to 10News, saying Villagomez had been expelled following his arrest."GCU Public Safety became aware of an incident involving Netzer Villagomez and immediately took possession of his emotional support animal to ensure its safety. The animal was turned over to the Arizona Humane Society and Mr. Villagomez was removed from campus. Mr. Villagomez has since been expelled from the university following his arrest by the Phoenix Police Department. Phoenix PD is handling any further actions associated with this matter."Miso will remain in AHS' care indefinitely, the humane society says. 1837
