During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island in California to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. The "van life movement" has made a mark on social media. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A comprehensive outreach strategy to expand testing access for Latino residents and other communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic was announced Friday by local leaders.The new program will kick off on Monday, with a new testing site at the Mexican Consulate in downtown San Diego at 1549 India St. Starting at 8 a.m., walk-up appointments will be available until 3:30 p.m., according to the announcement from San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego and other local leaders."We are prioritizing our response to health inequities in the Latino community by prioritizing efforts to help address accessibility barriers that are contributing to Latinos being disproportionately impacted by this pandemic," Fletcher said. "Whether you live in the south, north or east of our county, you should have access to testing and resources to prevent and treat the spread of COVID-19."The consulate will be the first of several locations in a 14-day rotation. Two other confirmed sites include San Luis Rey Church in Oceanside and St. Anthony of Padua in National City. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A flurry of businesses can reopen Friday throughout San Diego County, but community-transmitted COVID-19 outbreaks have activated one of the county's public health triggers, placing a pause on any additional openings allowed by the state.The county also reported 238 new cases of the illness on Thursday, a new daily high and one that moved the total number of cases in the county over the 10,000 milestone to 10,092. Another four deaths were reported Thursday, raising the total deaths related to COVID-19 to 331.These new cases comprise 2% of a new daily high of tests reported, 10,070, for a cumulative total of 254,391 tests since the pandemic began.The businesses scheduled to open Friday, including personal care businesses like skin care and waxing salons, tattoo parlors, massage therapists and nail salons -- will still be allowed to open, but San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said any further openings allowed by Gov. Gavin Newsom wouldn't be implemented until numbers go down."We continue to implore the public to wear facial coverings and avoid having gatherings at your home," Fletcher said.The culprit in the county's pause action is the eight community- transmitted outbreaks San Diego County has recorded in the last week.As part of the 13 public health triggers announced earlier this month, the county could take industry-specific actions, pause all reopening efforts or even dial back reopenings if enough of the metrics rise above a certain threshold. The threshold for community outbreaks -- defined as three or more lab-confirmed cases from different households -- was seven or fewer in a week's span.The eight outbreaks from June 11-17 is the most in a one-week span since the pandemic began, eclipsing the previous high of six during the week of April 29-May 5.However, if no new outbreaks are reported Friday, three of those outbreaks will fall off the rolling seven-day period the county is monitoring, bringing the metric back to "green."The two outbreaks reported Thursday were at a campground and a social club. Fletcher did not report where exactly those were, or the previous outbreaks, saying doing so would "undermine" the county's cooperation from self-reporting businesses and other locations.Nolita Hall posted on its Facebook page that an asymptomatic employee had tested positive for COVID-19 and that the Little Italy restaurant would close until June 30 for deep cleaning. SAN DIEGO — The Barbusa Restaurant in the heart of Little Italy is filled with famous guests, so to speak.Celebrity cutouts of the likes of Tommy Lasorda and the late James Gandolfini take up seats at tables closed for social distancing.“It's something just cute, and it makes people just feel comfortable,” Co-owner Joey Busalacchi says.Busalacchi put them there to help make the reopening more festive. Of course, he’d rather have real people in those tables - but can't because of coronavirus restrictions.The restaurant’s normal capacity is about 160, but had to be reduced to 120.That all changed Saturday night - when the Little Italy Association arranged for India Street to be closed to vehicle traffic - allowing restaurants to expand into the street.The extra space meant restaurants, already on razor thin margins, could serve their normal customer load.Barbusa was filled, serving up to 160 patrons.“Covid's not going away for a while, so the more we could get people to eat outdoors the better,” said Marco Li Mandri, the Little Italy Association’s Chief Executive Administrator.Li Mandri says the event was a major success, with good social distancing practices.The association will do it again this Saturday - with even more restaurants open - and could expand it even more in the future.Additionally, the Gaslamp Quarter Association announced on-street dining on Fifth Avenue starting Thursday.The city is also currently weighing a request from the North Park Main Street Association for dining on a stretch of 30th Street near University. 1563
