Boeing employees knew about problems with flight simulators for the now-grounded 737 Max and apparently tried to hide them from federal regulators, according to documents released Thursday.In internal messages, Boeing employees talked about misleading regulators about problems with the simulators. In one exchange, an employee told a colleague they wouldn’t let their family ride on a 737 Max.Boeing said the statements “raise questions about Boeing’s interactions with the FAA” in getting the simulators qualified. But said the company is confident that the machines work properly.“These communications do not reflect the company we are and need to be, and they are completely unacceptable,” Boeing said in a statement. Employees also groused about Boeing’s senior management, the company’s selection of low-cost suppliers, wasting money, and the Max.“This airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys,” one employee wrote.Names of the employees who wrote the emails and text messages were redacted.The Max has been grounded worldwide since March, after two crashes killed 346 people. The crash that month of an Ethiopian Airlines flight had been preceded in October 2018 by the crash of a brand-new Max operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air.Boeing is still working to update software and other systems on the Max to convince regulators to let it fly again. The work has taken much longer than Boeing expected.The latest batch of internal Boeing documents were provided to the Federal Aviation Administration and Congress last month and released on Thursday. The company said it was considering disciplinary action against some employees.An FAA spokesman said the agency found no new safety risks that have not already been identified as part of the FAA’s review of changes that Boeing is making to the plane. The spokesman, Lynn Lunsford, said the simulator mentioned in the documents has been checked three times in the last six months.”Any potential safety deficiencies identified in the documents have been addressed,” he said in a statement.A lawmaker leading one of the congressional investigations into Boeing called them “incredibly damning.”“They paint a deeply disturbing picture of the lengths Boeing was apparently willing to go to in order to evade scrutiny from regulators, flight crews, and the flying public, even as its own employees were sounding alarms internally,” said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., chairman of the House Transportation Committee.DeFazio said the documents detail “some of the earliest and most fundamental errors in the decisions that went into the fatally flawed aircraft.” DeFazio and other critics have accused the company of putting profit over safety.The grounding of the Max will cost the company billions in compensation to families of passengers killed in the crashes and airlines that canceled thousands of flights. Authorities are investigating whether deputies shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others. The Los Angeles Times reports that a public safety source with knowledge of the events had seen one of the photos on the phone of another official in a setting that was not related to the investigation of the crash. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the allegations. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said in a statement Friday it was investigating the allegations. "The Sheriff’s Department is aware of recent media reports alleging deputies shared images from the January 26th, 2020 helicopter crash, which tragically claimed the lives of nine people. Sarah Woods of Canton, South Dakota, has battled debt nearly her entire life, almost two decades. “Debt seems like almost a constant way of life,” said Woods.But life, some might argue, wasn't fair to Woods.“Within three months I got married, found out I had cancer and also had our first child,” said Woods. “So, you take three of the biggest things that could possibly happen in our life and roll them into your early 20s, I mean you’re going to start out on the wrong foot and since then it’s just been one struggle after another.”Woods and her husband now have three boys and taking care of them isn’t cheap. Woods says some months their pantry's been bare.“To actually have to reach out and say no, we are personally struggling is a hard one,” said Woods.Lori Pudenz helps with the food pantry that's run out of the Canton Lutheran Church, where Woods works. Pudenz says the pantry’s been a huge blessing.“My opinion is nobody should go hungry and that’s what we’re here for,” said Pudenz.Woods' husband is a machinist and she works full-time at the church, but it still hasn't been enough to overcome a mountain of debt that began with cancer at 19 years old.“I couldn’t imagine having an extra in my bank account that wasn’t due to someone else.”Not all of Woods’ debt has come from being a victim of circumstances. She admittedly says she has made some very bad decisions. But what has changed her life is a class on debt taught at the church where she works.“I can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Woods. “We’re definitely getting there. I’ve been able to learn a lot of different life skills and really face my debts.”And after a full day at work at the church, Woods goes to work at home. She has created a plus size boutique called Becky’s Closet. “The last few months have been tremendous for business. It has created Christmas for us.” 1975
