SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspicious package discovered at Naval Air Station North Island forced military investigators to close the base's Main Gate on Monday morning.The closure at base, located on the northside of the Coronado peninsula, created major delays along the Coronado Bridge and into the base."North Island Naval Air Station main gate has been closed, expect delays in the area," the Coronado Police Department tweeted.Officials kept the remaining two gates at the base were left open during the investigation. The Main Gate was reopened just before 9:30 a.m.Details about the package were not available at this time.NAS North Island is the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy.The incident comes as San Diego County military bases began bolstering security measures amid rising tensions in the Middle East and threats of retaliation against the U.S. after an American drone killed a top Iranian general.Officials have warned that military law enforcement will be checking all identification cards and increasing vehicle inspections prompting entry gate delays."Due to these security measures, travelers will experience longer wait times entering installation," Camp Pendleton officials said on Twitter Monday. 1255

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid sky high gas prices and commuting headaches, more San Diego commuters are turning to telecommuting.Like many, Maria Parra's day at work begins with a cup of coffee.  The difference is her coffee is brewed in the kitchen at her City Heights home, feet away from her office.  Parra, who does coding for Sharp Health, started telecommuting in 2010."It only took me about a week to realize how great a situation it was," said Parra.RELATED: How to convince your employer to allow you to telecommuteParra says she saves thousands every year in commuting costs, from gas to wear and tear on her car.   Gone are those rush hour headaches."The time you are saving and the stress you are alleviating is great," said Parra.According to SANDAG, the average San Diegan spends the equivalent of 22 work days every year commuting to work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Texas company has been awarded a contract to erect nearly 30 miles of fencing along California's border with Mexico.U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded 7 million in construction contracts to Texas-based construction company SLSCO. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and up to 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in California within the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro Sectors.The 15-mile primary pedestrian replacement wall will include the installation of a new, 30-foot steel bollard wall: About 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. According to CBP, these areas represent areas where wall replacement has been a priority. Construction for that 6 million project is slated to begin in July 2019.The secondary wall project is a 1 million contract and will include up to 14 miles of the same 30-foot steel bollard wall adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently under construction. Construction of that project is projected to begin February 2019.SLSCO has already worked on border construction earlier this year, constructing new steel fencing in Border Field State Park.The two projects are a part of President Trump's "Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements" executive order, which calls for a contiguous wall to be built along the southern U.S. border with Mexico, according to CBP. 1447

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A virtual job fair for Camp Pendleton Marines, their spouses, veterans, and members of the reserve and guard is set for Thursday.Organizer RecruitMilitary says more than 35 employers will attend, and more than 400 job seekers have already signed up. The jobs run the gamut from full to part-time, telecommuting, and include local and national employers. The City of Carlsbad and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department will be there recruiting. Other employers include Northrop Grumman, ADT, Spectrum and Eli Lilly. "We have employers that have made the transition themselves," said Jennifer Hadac, a Navy veteran organizing the fair for RecruitMilitary. "A lot of them are veterans themselves or military spouses or members of the military community, so they understand the challenges that they face, they speak the lingo, so it kind of bridges the gap for them."The nationwide Veteran unemployment rate is now at a seasonally adjusted 8 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An arson investigation expert says the probe into possible arson behind the USS Bonhomme Richard fire could take more than a year to complete.Wednesday multiple sources with close ties to NCIS told ABC 10News that a sailor is being investigated for arson in the Navy ship fire at Naval Base San Diego last month.Timothy Wilhelm is a senior fire investigator with Robson Forensic and has extensive experience with arson cases. He’s not part of the Navy ship investigation but says it could take agents more than a year to complete their findings. “There's so many delicate systems in that ship. It took crews four days to extinguish the fire.The damage was so bad, that it remains unclear if the USS Bonhomme Richard will sail again.“If the fire burned for four days where it originated, chances are [that] most of that evidence is going to be consumed. It's going to be gone,” said Wilhelm.Wilhelm said investigators may be considering arson because of other clues.
