SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport is making travel more accessible to blind and visually-impaired customers.They've partnered with San Diego startup Aira, a company which uses augmented reality to connect people with visual impairments to live agents.Through smart glasses or a smartphone camera, the agent becomes the customer's eyes, guiding them through the airport.While users typically pay a monthly Aira subscription, the service is now available free at select airports, helping customers through security, to restaurants, and baggage claim."My first time that I traveled alone after losing my vision, I was a wreck, I mean a wreck," said Maria Johnson, who became legally blind as an adult.“The thing about having Aira with you when traveling is you always have somebody with you," said Johnson.Johnson has a rare mitochondrial disease and started losing her vision six years ago. Shortly after her 50th birthday, she was legally blind. “I’m a mom, I have two kids, I’m a group fitness instructor, I was running a boot camp and running classes all over San Diego, and all of a sudden this happened," said Johnson.Johnson has used adaptive technologies like Aira to adjust to her new reality but admits it was difficult to ask for help in the beginning.“The beauty of it is that’s what the agent is there for, no job is too small or too big for an Aira agent," said Johnson.The Aira agent not only can see where the customer is but has access to an airport map.Airport officials say it's part of a broader mission to continue innovating at Lindbergh. 1591
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This year Comic-Con celebrates its 50th anniversary. Only five people have attended the convention every single year. One of them is noted author and television writer Mark Evanier.Evanier began writing comic books when he was a teenager in the 1960's, including the comics featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. His mentor was comic book legend Jack Kirby, who created or co-created many of the genre's most famous characters, such as Captain America, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. It was Kirby who first told Evanier that a group of fans in San Diego were planning a comic convention at the El Cortez Hotel."I thought it was a great idea," Evanier told 10News in an interview from his office in Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would get as large as it did. I thought maybe we'll have 400, 500 people there."While Evanier thought it would be a niche convention, even in its early days Kirby saw the potential. "He said this a long time ago when this was a nutty idea to say. He said Comic-Con is going to take over the city of San Diego each year," Evanier recalled.Early supporters of the convention included Marvel creator Stan Lee and science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Comic-Con moved into the San Diego Convention Center in 1991, soon expanding to take over the ballrooms at the surrounding hotels.Evanier has had a big role at the convention over the 50 years. He is a frequent moderator of panels and a guest of honor at many events. He believes the convention will remain in San Diego for the long term (Comic-Con International recently signed an extention through 2024). This is despite the fact that Comic-Con is facing growing competition for the biggest stars and events. Other conventions have launched in cities across the country, and some companies, including Disney, have created their own events. "Yes, there are conventions that are trying to be bigger or wish they could be Comic-Con," Evanier said. "Those are all commercially run. The Comic-Con we go to in San Diego is a non-profit organization."Evanier is scheduled to moderate more than a dozen panels during this year's anniversary convention. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Board of Supervisors announced Monday that the county will close bars without a license to sell food ahead of the July 4 weekend in an effort to slow rising coronavirus cases.San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the county will close all bars, wineries, and breweries that do not have a license to serve food. California took a similar stance with several counties over the weekend."Bars are purely social settings where different people and groups often mix. It's a simple reality that alcohol consumption impairs judgment and may lead to less compliance with physical distancing guidelines," Fletcher said. "People often spend more time in a bar than other establishments like a restaurant for eating."RELATED: Gov. Of those, two outbreaks were traced back to restaurants/bars. During Monday's press conference, the county wasn't able to specify how many of the region's total cases had visited bars.Fletcher added that the county is reinstating an order that alcohol can only be consumed while customers are simultaneous eating meals and can't be ordered alone. "The most patriotic thing we can do on the July 4 weekend is adhere to the public health orders and work to save lives."The announcement comes as San Diego County set a new record for positive coronavirus cases at 498, bringing the region's total to 13,832 total cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport expects an increase in travelers during the upcoming holiday season, even as cases of coronavirus surge in San Diego."We have seen an increase (in the past)," says Airport Spokesperson Nicole Hall. "So we are planning for that. We have additional flights leaving San Diego and anticipate an increase in the travel during that time."When the pandemic started, passenger travel at the San Diego International Airport dropped more than 90%. It has since recovered a bit. Airport officials say they're now down 67% from last year.With more people expected to fly over the holidays, the airport has increased it's efforts to make sure everyone who passes through it stays safe.They are requiring masks for every person in the airport. Signs shaped like surfboards help mark 6-foot social distancing requirements on the floor. Seats are marked as "off-limits." Plexiglass dividers line ticket counters and concession areas. But now there’s another layer making body art a deep, personal connection with a loved one, using their DNA in the ink of your tattoo.It's a distinct idea on an art form thousands of years old."Probably 90 percent of the people who are on this journey with us now start off saying, 'This is a gimmick,'" says Everence Co-Founder Patrick Duffy.That includes Duffy’s Co-Founder, former Navy SEAL Boyd Renner.“I had never had a tattoo," adds Renner. “I did 28 years in the Navy, never wanted one.”But it's no gimmick. Imagine, the ability to take a loved one with you everywhere you go, in a tattoo.“I had the idea, wouldn’t it be cool to somehow turn that tattoo into some kind of vessel or reliquary,” says Duffy. “Perhaps even a piece of the person for memorializing.”That’s the moment Duffy convinced his old Navy SEAL buddy to join him on this business venture.“One thing I learned from 28 years in the Navy is every military guy I ever met carried something with them,” says Renner thinking back to his SEAL deployments.For those entering combat zones, knowing there’s a chance they may never return, a picture, a keepsake, and for many some form of tattoo honoring or memorializing a loved one that inspires them is what they take into combat with them.What they came up with was Everence. DNA from a loved one, taken with a simple cheek swab, sent to their labs in Virginia, purified and encapsulated in a medical grade material, then broken down into powder form to be mixed with tattoo ink.“The concept is based on a very, very simple premise that people are free to be their best when they feel a sense of connection to what inspires them,” adds Duffy.For San Diego tattoo artist Laura Crow, whose clientele is heavily based in the military or law enforcement, the idea was intriguing.“I was interested, yet skeptical,” says Crow.Skeptical at first, like many. After all, it’s the DNA from another human being or source. So how does it work?“It goes into the body the same as tattoo ink, and it is designed to be recognized by the body the exact same way as a non-hazardous foreign body,” explains Duffy.Tattoo artist Crow says the technology does align with some of her clientele. “A lot of my clients go and deploy for six months, four months, into war zones,” says Crow. “And I could definitely see some of them want to have their tattoos have the DNA of their children, their wives, to take a little bit of home.”The co-founders are clients too. Duffy has the DNA of his daughter in his tattoo depicting a story they love. And Renner, the Navy SEAL who never wanted a tattoo, now has the DNA of his wife - inspired by her resilience battling Cystic Fibrosis. They were together the day he got his.“She was able to take the Everence, her encapsulated DNA, and add it to the red ink that they added to the red rose on the tattoo,” says Renner proudly displaying the art on his left calf. 3071
