Stranded for hours on a snowy tarmac, passengers on an Air Canada flight were beginning to feel the stress, but their pilot knew the answer: 23 pizzas delivered to the airplane's door.Air Canada Flight 608 left Toronto bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Monday night, but bad weather forced the aircraft to be diverted to Fredericton, New Brunswick. After several hours stuck in the plane, the pilot decided to order food.Jofee Larivée, the manager at Minglers Restaurant and Pub in Oromocto, received the pilot's call and took down his order for 23 pizzas topped with cheese and pepperoni."We told him we could have them made in an hour or hour and a half," Larivée said. She said they have never delivered pizza to an airplane, and they were "laughing all night" about the unusual order. Her crew got the pizzas ready in an hour and sent them to the airport via Minglers' delivery service.Larivée said she called the plane to tell the pilot of the pizzas' arrival and the captain sent people to meet the delivery at the door.Passenger Philomena Hughes told 1069
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) says a controversy surrounding her fellow Muslim congresswoman is distracting from "real issues."Tlaib was asked about the feud between Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) and President Donald Trump Monday night during an event at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School."We have people that are continuing to target us, to use fear-mongering, hate rhetoric to divert from real issues around healthcare, around immigration reform that need to be addressed," Tlaib said. The controversy surrounding Omar stems from a a speech she delivered at a recent Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in March. While describing why CAIR had been founded, Omar cited the September 11 attacks."Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen, and frankly, I'm tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it," Omar said, according to CBS News. "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties." CAIR was in fact founded in 1994. Omar's opponents have also called the comments insensitvie to the survivors of the attack.Over the weekend, Trump tweeted a video of Omar's comments along with images from the attack, along wih the caption "WE WILL NEVER FORGET!" Trump also called Omar "ungrateful" during a trip to her home state of Minnesota on Monday.Omar says she has seen an increase in death threats against her since Trump tweeted the video of the weekend. 1556
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Florida man spent New Year's day in a jail cell after police say he attacked a McDonald's employee for not giving him a straw. Yasmine James was behind the counter of the McDonald's on 34th Street South, when St. Pete police say 41-year-old Daniel Taylor forcefully grabbed her and pulled her up onto the counter. According to police, James defended herself by punching Taylor in the face, as he held on to her shirt's collar. 463
Sanctuary city? Results: Yay: 29 Nay: 71Voters in Tucson, Arizona are voting today to decide whether it should become the first city in Arizona to be a sanctuary city, which would prohibit the city's police department for arresting someone solely because of their immigration status. The ballot language states: "Amending Tucson code to establish sanctuary policies; prohibit Tucson police participation in any law enforcement activity for the purpose of determining immigration status; limit officers' authority to inquire about immigration status or contact federal agencies to determine status; and limit joint law enforcement operations between Tucson police and federal agencies."Ranking candidatesResults: Yay: 74 Nay: 26New York City voters are deciding today on whether to change how voters cast ballots in local elections. Instead of the traditional method of voters picking one candidate in an election — otherwise known as first-past-the-post, or FPTP voting — the referendum would allow voters to rank candidates, which would allow for "instant runoffs."The new voting method would go into effect in 2021 if approved by voters, and it would only be used for municipal elections such as for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, borough president and city council members. How it would work is voters can rank up to five candidates on their ballot, and if a candidate receives a majority of first-preference votes, that candidate wins. If a candidate does not receive a majority, then the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated, and the ballots are recalculated. The runoffs continue until a candidate receives a majority of the vote. Democracy dollarsCitizens of Albuquerque are deciding whether to allow for government-disbursed vouchers to be used in municipal elections. The vouchers, valued at per resident, would allow residents to give their vouchers to a candidate of their choice. 1938
