(AP) — A Florida teen identified as the mastermind of scheme that gained control of Twitter accounts of politicians, celebrities and technology moguls has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of fraud. Seventeen-year-old Graham Clark is accused of using the hijacked Twitter accounts to scam people around the world out of more than 0,000 in Bitcoin. He faces numerous charges including 17 counts of communications fraud and 11 counts of fraudulent use of personal information. Two other men were also charged in the case. Mason Sheppard, 19, of Bognor Regis, U.K., and Nima Fazeli, 22, of Orlando were charged separately last week in California federal court.Court papers in the California cases say Fazeli and Sheppard brokered the sale of Twitter accounts stolen by a hacker who identified himself as “Kirk,” and said he could “reset, swap and control any Twitter account at will” in exchange for cybercurrency payments, claiming to be a Twitter employee.The documents do not specify Kirk’s real identity but say he is a teen being prosecuted in the Tampa area.Twitter has said the hacker gained access to a company dashboard that manages accounts by using social engineering and spear-phishing smartphones to obtain credentials from “a small number” of Twitter employees “to gain access to our internal systems.” Spear-phishing uses email or other messaging to deceive people into sharing access credentials.The prosecution believes Clark called a Twitter employee and was able to convince the employee he was a coworker, according to the Wall Street Journal.A blog post from Twitter last week shared some details of the hack. "Using the credentials of employees with access to these tools, the attackers targeted 130 Twitter accounts, ultimately Tweeting from 45, accessing the DM inbox of 36, and downloading the Twitter Data of 7." The 2020 election is set to be unlike any other in history.With the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials expect up to 70% of all ballots to come in through the mail.There have been claims of fraud by President Donald Trump, but experts say the data does not support those claims."Somebody is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to commit voter fraud,” said Lawrence Nordon, director of the election reform program at the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-partisan public policy group at NYU.Nordon says in the last few federal elections, 25% of all votes were cast through the mail. He says it can not only be more convenient, but an important tool when it comes to verifying results.“Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots,” said Nordon. “But I think people should feel very comfortable with the security of the system.”As for security, election officials take extra measures to ensure the integrity of the ballot. Firstly, mail-in voting reduces the risk of foreign interference to nearly zero. Mail-in ballots are printed on a specific type of paper with technical markings that are difficult to duplicate. They also include several local elections like city council, school boards, and ballot initiatives. It means there are thousands of different ballots for our country’s 3,000 counties.Then you consider the actual ballot itself.It comes in a secrecy envelope that is connected to each individual voter who needs to sign it. I think we’ve had one prosecution in 15 years,” said Paul Lopez, clerk and recorder for the city and county of Denver.Lopez says of the nearly 213,841 votes cast by Denver residents in the state primary on June 30, 211,626 were cast through the mail. And this is for a state that had the highest voter turnout of 77% in 2016.“The biggest thing we can do is inform folks and make sure they understand the process, make sure they understand that it’s secure, that it’s safe, that it’s transparent,” said Lopez.This is not to say there are not cases of voter fraud; there are. Telecommunications company AT&T told its customers on Wednesday evening that they may need to restart their device in order to regain cellular service following a massive service outage. According to the outage tracker Down Detector, a sudden spike in AT&T outages were reported around 6 p.m. ET. Thousands of customers were reporting that their AT&T cellphone service was out. "If you've experienced an issue when making wireless calls, please restart your device, this might be required multiple times- that should resolve the issue," AT&T said on its Twitter page. AT&T said in a statement that it is aware of the outage."We are aware of an issue affecting some users ability to make certain wireless calls.
