Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (C) speaks during the conclusion session of the national conference of economic planners, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 14, 2008.     BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang stressed the importance of maintaining stable and healthy economic growth through domestic demand expansion and economic restructuring on Sunday.     Addressing a national conference of economic planners concluded here Sunday, Li said China's economy was in face of a grim situation due to the global financial crisis, but the fundamentals and long-term trend of the country's economic development were unchanged.     The economic development was the foundation for solving all problems, Li said, noting that as the central government had pointed out, priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth next year.     This would be achieved through expanding domestic demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, Li said. All would ultimately target improving people's living standard. The national conference of economic planners concludes in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 14, 2008. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang attended the conclusion session of the conference.     He urged local governments to encourage social investment to sustain economic growth, take measures to maintain stable growth in export and step up studies on the global economy to enhance capacities for prevision.     Economic restructuring was an effective way to deal with current global financial crisis, Li said, adding that efforts should be made to ensure employment, improve people's living conditions and encourage technological innovation.     He emphasized the importance of developing the tertiary industry which could absorb large amounts of workers and energy-saving industries which could sustain the country's growth.     He urged the authorities to let the market play a fundamental role in the allocation of resources and step up innovation in corporate management.

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Two TV rivals should have locked horns on Lunar New Year's Eve, but the alternative to the traditional China Central Television (CCTV) New Year gala, the "Shanzhai" show was just not available for most people in China.     Lao Meng, a Beijing-based wedding photographer who initiated a homemade gala focusing on performances by ordinary people, made the "Shanzhai" show - an "alternative" pastiche of CCTV's traditional gala. He called it "a real show by and for ordinary people."     The "Shanzhai" show which had claimed to be for college students and migrant workers who could not return home for the holiday, turned out to be only available on the Macao Asia Satellite TV (MASTV) and its website.     Most families in the country cannot get satellite TV channels, and the MASTV website page could not be opened from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., when the show was on.     Lao Meng told Xinhua he did not know why, "maybe too many people were logging on to the website."     Lao Meng also said the show on MASTV was actually a recorded broadcast.     Unlike all CCTV gala's performers who performed live, Lao Meng and his performers were having a party to celebrate their "Shanzhai" gala in an indoor hall in Beijing on New Year's Eve.     Chen Jun, a magazine editor in Shanghai, said he was disappointed to not have access to the "Shanzhai" show.     "It was much all mouth and no trousers. I think it has let many people down," Chen said.     The "Shanzhai" gala had won wide support on the Internet and much media attention from home and abroad, as it claimed to make a show for common people and to challenge CCTV's gala.

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters face an increased risk of not being paid for their goods as foreign banks run out of cash and some overseas importers evade paying debts, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) warned Monday.     "The cases of malicious debt evasion and breach of contracts by importers in certain countries or regions are on the rise," said the ministry in a notice. It attributed the phenomenon to the impact of the deepening global financial crisis.     The MOC urged local governments, guilds and overseas Chinese businesses to more closely monitor the credit of foreign importers.     Priority should be placed on tracking the credit ratings of foreign lenders, it said.     The ministry also called on local governments to support the development of export credit insurance and encourage exporters to carry such insurance by reducing premiums.     From January to November last year, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE) provided 56.5 billion U.S. dollars of guarantee for exporters against credit risks such as payment default. That is 63.6 percent higher than the same period a year earlier. The reason for the increase is that more exporters sought insurance, company figures show.     SINOSURE is China's only policy insurance company undertaking export credit insurance.     In that period, SINOSURE paid 210 million U.S. dollars of indemnities, up 174.5 percent from the same period of 2007.     In December, the insurer reduced credit ratings for a record 48countries, including the United States. A total of 191 countries were reappraised in December.

LIMA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that the central government would take effective measures to help Hong Kong to ward off the impact of the global financial crisis, safeguard the stability of financial markets and boost economic growth.     Hu made the remarks during a meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.     Hu expressed his belief that as long as the HKSAR government and people from all circles could be united, the region would maintain its long-term prosperity and stability.     Donald Tsang briefed the president on his government's efforts in dealing with the current financial crisis and voiced his appreciation for the central government's support to Hong Kong. BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese charter plane organized by Chinese government landed Saturday afternoon at U-Tapao airport, some 180 kilometers from Bangkok to bring back home Chinese tourists stranded in Bangkok due to anti-government protestors' siege of the two Bangkok airports.     The first flight from China Eastern Airlines, a A300 airplane, arrived at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0930GMT) at the small and crowded military airport to board 261 passengers back to Shanghai. It will be followed by four other charter planes, from the China International Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.     The five planes will take the first batch of some 1,400 stranded Chinese back to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hopefully to take off on late Saturday. Chinese tourists, once stranded after the closure of airports in Bangkok, arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, in Shanghai, on Nov. 29, 2008. The 46 tourists returned to Shanghai on Saturday aboard a Dragonair flight. They had to drive to Phuket island, more than 1,000 km south of Bangkok, to be flown to Hong Kong and then the Chinese mainlandChinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jiuhuan, who arrived at the airport to receive the first flight, said that the Chinese government has arranged the second batch of planes to fly to Thailand on Sunday.     At the airport, which the Thai government made a make-shift international air departing port, over 10,000 passengers flooded into the airport since the morning, causing heavy traffic jam on ways from Bangkok towards the airport.     Nearly 100,000 passengers have missed flights since People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protestors besieged and shut down Bangkok's two main airports Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang domestic airport on Tuesday. The total number of the affected travelers could hit 300,000 as the two airports remained closed, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said Saturday.     The total of stranded Chinese, including those from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, was estimated at about 4,000, according to the Chinese Embassy here.
