SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many local restaurants are having a hard time finding outdoor patio heaters.The difficulty comes as restaurant owners in San Diego County prepare to close their indoor dining areas and take operations outside when new COVID-19 related restrictions take effect Saturday. The county is moving from the state's red to the purple tier following an increase in COVID-19 cases. The purple tier has the toughest COVID-19 related rules.The owners of Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest say they own four outdoor heaters and recently purchased two more from Amazon three weeks ago, one of the last left at the time. They are due to arrive any day."We paid about four times the price of our original space heater," owner Emily Green Lake said. "Right now, the heaters are really what it's all about in keeping people wanting to come back to your spot, or that second glass of wine or that dessert, and all of those extras are what's keeping businesses afloat right now."Premier Patio Heating in Oceanside, which rents out patio heaters, is out. Eddie Essey, vice president of operations, said they have a backlog of about 200 orders from restaurants and hotels. Anyone looking to get some from them now has a six-week wait."I'm saying six weeks," Essey said. "Honestly, that's a little optimistic. Realistically, I don't expect my supply chain to be where I want it to be until March or April."He's putting new orders on a waitlist but advising the customer to keep looking and trying other suppliers."Restaurants are struggling enough as it is that I don't want them to be missing out on income on their patios every night just waiting on me to get a shipment in," he said. "Everyone needs more patio heaters. People that already have some need more, people that don't have any, need some."Many restaurants told ABC 10News off-camera that they could not find any patio heaters and are still looking. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s been a historic wildfire season in California, made even more complicated by the pandemic.Emergency officials in San Diego County continue to shore up evacuation plans and brace for the worst, as more than a dozen wildfires in Northern California reveal the challenges of responding to two crises at once.As tens of thousands of Californians fled the wildfires last month, some turned to a shelter at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. But with new rules in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the shelter quickly filled up.The Civic Auditorium reached capacity August 21 and had to turn some evacuees away. The shelter remains at capacity, according to Cal Fire.About 27,000 people remained under evacuation orders as of Tuesday, according to Cal Fire. The Red Cross and partner organizations were sheltering more than 4,500 Californians in various settings as of Monday night.The Red Cross has put some displaced residents in hotels, a strategy that emergency workers in San Diego County are planning to emulate.“The county, since the beginning of the pandemic, has been working really proactively to identify and contract with hotels and motels to meet the unique housing and lodging needs of our community members,” said Senior Emergency Services Coordinator Julie Jeakle.With help from the Red Cross, the county has amassed a list of nearly 100 hotels and motels in San Diego County that could be called upon as emergency shelters. Some of these hotels were previously tapped as quarantine sites for individuals exposed to COVID-19.Traditional shelters in gyms or at schools won’t go away, but they’ll look different. Red Cross volunteers will conduct temperature checks and health screenings. People who show symptoms will be taken to another location to isolate, Jeakle said.“Individuals can also expect to see individually packaged meals, instead of the cafeteria style-meal service we’ve traditionally provided in the past,” she said. “They may also see some health and behavioral health services provided virtually.”But what if there’s a widespread event, with tens of thousands of evacuations like in Northern California?In the early days of the fire in Santa Cruz County, several hotels filled up. The county had to urge tourists to leave so evacuees could get access to rooms.San Diego County has turned to the Mission Valley stadium site for mass evacuations, including during the 2007 Witch Fire. But that site is currently under construction, and emergency responders would need permission from the stadium’s new owner, San Diego State.Another option: the Del Mar Fairgrounds.The fairgrounds was used as a large animal shelter four times in recent history: 2003, 2007, 2014 and 2017. But in 2007 it also hosted people, and Jeakle said the county had been in recent talks with the venue.Determining which site -- or sites -- will serve as an evacuation shelter will be based on several factors, including the size and severity of the emergency, Jeakle said.“We’re certainly here to serve if and when we’re needed,” said Del Mar Fairgrounds marketing director Jennifer Hellman.Hellman said the fairgrounds would have procedures in place requiring mask-wearing, social distancing and increased cleaning, and there would be hand sanitizer stations deployed throughout the site. 3325

Karina Sanchez searches for the right words. "We can't even believe how great business has been, we're so so thankful for it."Sanchez and her husband are owners of Waterhorse Charters in Mission Bay. Opening just last year, they offer scuba diving tours, party cruises, fishing and whale watching excursions.When the pandemic hit, they were forced to temporarily shutdown by state mandate. But once given the green light to reopen, Sanchez says business has been booming, with people want to get out and do it safely."I feel like people get a little more comfortable going out in the water," says Sanchez, "Something that's outdoors; than having, for instance, a house party or just going to bars or something like that."Sanchez connects with many of her customers through the site GetMyBoat.Com, which is kind of like Airbnb for boats."There's some data that suggests the average boat is only used 8 to 10% of the year," says Val Streif, who represents GetMyBoat.com from their headquarters in Minneapolis. "And the other time it's just sitting in a dock or marina."Streif says GetMyBoat has listings from private boat owners and charter services in 184 countries around the world, offering everything from kayaks and jet skis to pontoon boats and yachts."This is a way for people to earn some supplemental income," says Strief, "When they're not using the boat for themselves for personal purposes."There are increased regulations during the pandemic -- stepped up cleaning, fewer passengers for social distancing and other steps depending on the boat or excursion offered."We require everybody to wear a mask while they're on board," says Sanchez, "When they rent a regulator -- which is the piece you put in your mouth when you're diving -- every time people rent one from us we make them buy the mouthpiece."Sanchez says the changes aren't hurting business, as they've been sold out. And they're not the only ones, which is why GetMyBoat.com looking for more boat owners to sign up and perhaps help themselves "stay afloat" during these tough times, by renting out their boat.Sanchez says the demand is definitely there."Everybody is just grateful they can go out on the water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It should be no surprise at this point that home prices are still on the rise in San Diego this April. A new report from Zillow shows that, year-to-year, home values in San Diego have risen more than eight percent. According to Zillow, the median home value in San Diego currently sits at just over 5,000. That change marks an increase of 8.4 percent since last April.Meanwhile, rent is also on the rise at a median of just over ,500, or an increase of 3.6 percent since last April.Click on the charts below for more information: The high cost of housing in San Diego is in stark contrast with national home values.The median home value nationally is 5,600. If there's one thing San Diego and the rest of the nation have in common in this report it's that both saw home values increase by more than eight percent.“Home values are rising faster than we’ve seen in a very long time: The spring home shopping season has been a perfect storm of strong demand and tight supply,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas.Nationally, the number of new homes being built is also seeing a decrease. “Sluggish new construction has exacerbated the supply situation and homes that are hitting the market, are moving very quickly once they do. Americans are also in a spending mood, boosted by recent tax cuts and rising wages. Millennials who long delayed becoming homeowners, are out in force – a shift we’re also seeing in softer rent appreciation," said Terrazas.
