SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses say they're approaching a breaking point amid the coronavirus pandemic.A San Diego registered nurse spoke to 10News, but asked we don't identify her out of fear she would lose her job, to explain what she and other healthcare workers on the front lines are experiencing.She said Thursday night she saw a post on a nursing social media page stating nurses were encouraged not to wear N95 masks in the Intensive Care Unit. Also circulating on social media is a Change.org petition titled, "US Physicians/Healthcare Workers For Personal Protective Equipment in COVID-19 Pandemic." The petition garnered more than 800,000 signatures by Friday afternoon.Part of the argument is the CDC downgraded the mode of transmission from aerosol to droplets. That means a surgical mask is allowed over the more sturdy N95 mask."Things that are frightening us the most is 1. Nurses are not allowed to bring their own N95 masks from home, we are not allowed to enter the hospital with them. 2. Management has been asking nurses not to wear their masks in hallways, or at the nursing station... and otherwise nurses have been written up with HR if they do not remove the masks... Masks having been removed from floors and only held by management," the unnamed nurse said, adding some hospitals nurses are only allowed one per shift.That is what's causing some nurses to panic. The nurse said there's been talk about refusing patient care until they are supplied with what they deem sufficient protection equipment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man has died after a hit-and-run outside Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa, after he had reportedly been discharged from the hospital.San Diego Police said a 61-year-old man was in the southbound land in the 3000 block of Health Center Dr. when they were hit by an unknown vehicle just after 5:30 p.m. The vehicle fled the scene after hitting the man, SDPD said.The man was taken to the hospital, where he died.Police told ABC 10News at the scene that the man had reportedly just been discharged from the hospital before he was hit by the vehicle.SDPD Traffic Division was investigating the collision. The victim's name was not immediately released.Health Center Dr. and Frost St. were closed following the hit-and-run for investigators. 773

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One San Diego restaurant has been awarded one of the most prestigious accolades given to eateries.Chef William Bradley's restaurant Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar was given one Michelin star in the guide's first California edition. The guide awards between one and three stars to restaurants, meaning either "a very good restaurant in its category" (one star), "excellent cooking, worth a detour" (two stars), or "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey" (three stars).Addison, a contemporary French restaurant, was San Diego's only restaurant to receive a star and one of 90 to receive at least one star in the California guide.RELATED: Michelin names several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'In a statement to 10News, Bradley said the award is "humbling." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Protesters are demanding a change to how sex education is taught to students in California. They say a law passed a few years ago and written by local Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber is sexualizing young minds. The group of protesters is with the Alliance to Protect Children. They tell 10News they are for sex ed in school, but the law is teaching students more than what parents are comfortable with. “It feels like its a disrespect to all mothers and children everywhere,” said mother of two Domonique Hinton. Dozens of protesters stood outside Dr. Shirley Weber’s office downtown Friday morning, speaking against Assembly Bill 329 that was written and passed in 2015. The bill makes it mandatory for students 7th through 12th grade to be taught sex education, but it also gives schools the option to offer the age-appropriate curriculum to lower grades. AB 329 states, “‘Comprehensive sexual health education means education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.”Protesters say graphic details of sexuality should not be taught in schools. “That is not the same as sex ed like we probably had in high school or middle school. That's something different,” says organizer America Figueroa. “Just that word, sexuality, it includes a lot of things in it like the teaching of other ideologies as well as sexual behaviors.”The group says a new bill will be introduced next year that will allow parents to review the curriculum online, so there is complete transparency. 10News reached out to Dr. Weber’s team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five people were injured after a crash near Scripps Ranch Sunday afternoon.The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pomerado Road and Avenue of Nations near Thurgood Marshall Middle School.Police said an 18-year-old driver and one passenger in a gray BMW were heading home from a basketball tournament when they swerved into oncoming traffic.They crashed into a white Chevy with four people inside, all between the ages of 70 and 90.The driver of the Chevy sedan, a 90-year-old woman, died from her injuries, police said.At least five ambulances were requested at the scene, according to authorities.The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but the driver told police he had mechanical trouble with his brakes. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident, police said.   917
