GRANDVIEW, Mo. — It's something many women dream about for years: the dress she'll walk down the aisle in to say "I do."One Kansas City-area bride about to be married is giving hers away to another bride going through a difficult time.Grandview resident Taylor Cooper will marry her fiance, Nick Amor, on Oct. 10. Cooper originally planned to have two wedding dresses, one to wear during her ceremony and the other during her reception.After downsizing her wedding due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she didn't think the wardrobe change would be appropriate and wanted the extra dress to go to a bride who could use some help.Cooper said she recently landed her dream job and feels blessed she has not faced many difficulties because of the pandemic."I just wanted to think of a way to give back to somebody that had been impacted," Cooper said. "I never really thought in my life that I would be in a position that I could gift something like this."She posted in a bridal Facebook group saying she was looking for a bride in need of a dress, and she was quickly connected with a bride in Georgia."She's just such a sweetheart, she literally has texted me every single day since I told her I was going to give it to her, and she's like 'I can't thank you enough,'" Cooper said.Cooper packed up the dress Wednesday to ship it to its new owner."I feel like it's going where it belongs," Cooper said.Cooper's October wedding is one of many happening this fall.Megan Julian, the founder of Julian Events in Kansas City, said she's seeing fewer couples canceling or postponing weddings and moving to smaller weddings instead."What we're finding is couples are surprised by what they can do with their original plans on a smaller scale," Julian said.Julian said many couples are also incorporating virtual aspects to their weddings so they can keep their original guest list.As Cooper prepares to send off her dress, she hopes to inspire others to lend a helping hand if they can."It doesn't really matter how big or small, I just think any nice gesture we can do for each other these days is just so important," Cooper said.This story originally reported by Emma James on kshb.com. 2180

GENEVA, Ohio — As the service industry struggles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, business owners and employees face a new stressor: enforcing mask mandates and seating requirements at bars and restaurants.It’s no secret that adults don’t enjoy being told what to do, especially if they feel enforcement infringes on their personal space or choices. Behavioral therapists say there is a complex science that explains why some adults have reverted to infantile behavior during the pandemic.In recent weeks, there have been several incidents across in the country about high-profile disputes over masks — some of which have grown violent. The owner of a northeast Ohio winery said such a dispute led to property damage over the weekend.“We did have one incident where a customer punched a hole in the drywall in the men’s room at 7 p.m. on Saturday night,” said Gene Sigel, the owner of South River Vineyard.Sigel said in 20 years, the winery has never had any sort of property damage, but new state-mandated restrictions when visiting the vineyard appear to have some customers on edge.“We’re used to enforcing guidelines from the governor,” Sigel said. “But at the same time, asking people to sit down or put on a mask is a whole new range of imposition on people’s personal space.”While Sigel said the hole in the wall is a fairly inexpensive fix, his employees feel the behavior speaks to the way service industry workers are being treated by customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.“It certainly played into the tension,” Sigel said. “For whatever reason, somebody felt that the only place that there wouldn’t be a surveillance camera was in the restroom and that was a good place to leave a comment on their feelings as to the requirements here.”Behavioral therapists at the Cleveland Clinic report there’s scientific data to back up why adults behave this way in stressful situations. “Rebel psychological reactance” refers to the brain’s reaction to a threat to freedom or personal choices.Therapists believe those frustrations sometimes cause people to abandon common sense and behave erratically, even when safety is concerned.Sigel said he wants to remind customers to be patient with staff when visiting the vineyard and other businesses and added that employees are all doing the best they can to provide an enjoyable experience despite the new restrictions.“None of us have a lot of options of places to go. GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado woman says she was denied a haircut at a local Great Clips because her baby son was not wearing a mask.Meri Smith decided she was finally ready to get a haircut. It would have been her first one since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. in March.She made an online appointment at Great Clips, and when she went to the salon to check-in, she was told that her son "can't come in" to the building."They said you can't come in because he's under two and he can't wear a mask," Smith said.Smith said she was confused and humiliated by the situation. As a teacher, she's familiar with Colorado's statewide mask mandate and she knows it doesn't apply to children who are 10 and younger."I just felt rejected. It made me sad and uncomfortable that I couldn't go get a haircut just because my son was a baby," Smith said.A spokesperson for Great Clips released the following statement from Michelle Iacovetta, the COO of Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. and a Great Clips franchisee."Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. does not require children under two years of age to wear a mask in our salons, following guidance from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
