SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria.She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria.She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three newly activated teams of chaplains certified as handlers of specially trained service dogs will offer added emotional support services to the employees of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the agency announced Tuesday."We are excited to introduce our three canines," San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said. "They are highly trained and available to our employees for emotional support in dealing with traumatic or emotionally challenging incidents. ... Using canines has proven successful in so many other areas, and we know these dogs will fit right in with our fire family."The SDFRD Crisis Response Canine program will be administered by chaplains Debi Arnold, Dan Guarrero and Betsy Salzman, making use of the skills of their dogs, Ty, Bodie and Genoa.Ty is a 6-year-old mini goldendoodle owned, trained and handled by Arnold, who bought him when he was 12 weeks old. They have two years' experience with a local trauma intervention program.Bodie, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever, was trained and placed by Next Step Service Dogs, which prepares canines for active-duty military personnel, veterans and first responders who have post-traumatic stress disorder and/or traumatic brain injury, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.The total cost for Bodie and his training was about ,000. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24.
