BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to an EU statement which denounced the execution of two Tibetans convicted of murder in last year's Lhasa riot.     The Swedish EU presidency released a statement Thursday, denouncing the recent death penalty handed down to two Tibetans involved in the Lhasa riot and asking China to abolish the capital sentences.     "We are strongly dissatisfied with and firmly oppose the EU statement," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a news release.     The Lhasa violence involving beating, smashing, looting and burning in 2008 was a sabotage activity "premeditated, organized and masterminded" by the ** Lama group, who instigated Tibetan separatists in and out of China to fuel up the incident, Ma said.     China's legal institutions have carried out fair and open trials and brought only the culprits of the criminal activities to justice, he said. "This was China's internal affair and judicial sovereignty which allows no other country to interfere with."     China asks the EU to abide by the principles of equality and mutual respect and not to send any misleading signals to Tibetan separatists, so as to ensure sound and stable development of EU-China relations, Ma said.

SINGAPORE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chief of General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chen Bingde called on Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and military officials on Friday.     During his meeting with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Teo Chee Hean, Chen said that China and Singapore share common strategic interests in economic development and regional security. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added. 

JINGGANGSHAN, Jiangxi, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on the country's police and other law enforcement organs to improve their capabilities to better serve the people and rely on the people to safeguard social harmony and stability. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by police chiefs during his visit to Jinggangshan, where late Chairman Mao Zedong and other revolutionists established the CPC's first rural revolutionary base in 1927, in east China's Jiangxi Province.     Law enforcement departments and police should handle public's complaints with earnest attitude, improve their credibility in law enforcement and rely on the masses of people to safeguard social harmony and stability, said Zhou, who also heads the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee.     He also called on the police officials to be innovative in their work and to strengthen the building of grassroots police organs.     Zhou visited the Jinggangshan martyrs' memorial park to pay respect to more than 48,000 revolutionary martyrs buried there, late Chairman Mao's former residence and other revolutionary sites on Tuesday.     Meng Jianzhu, Minister of Public Security who also attended the meeting, asked police departments at all levels to explore new methods for safeguarding national security and social stability.

PARIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Francois Fillon Tuesday met with visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo on bilateral ties at the Matignon Palace in Paris.     French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao had reached consensus on the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations during their meeting in New York last month, which charted the orientation for further development of their bilateral ties, Fillon said.     France would make joint efforts with China to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, deepen the strategic cooperation and boost cooperation in fields of nuclear power, aviation, environmental protection, new energy and small and medium-sized enterprises, Fillon said.     For his part, Dai said China-France relations had developed smoothly on the whole since the two nations forged diplomatic ties45 years ago.     China has treasured its ties with France and is ready to work with France to ensure that bilateral ties will further develop on the right direction, he said.     He urged the two countries to handle their bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, work hard to create and maintain a favorable atmosphere and environment for the development of China-France relations, and ensure the steady and sound development of their bilateral ties on the right track, he said.     Dai left Beijing last Friday to visit Britain and France at the invitation of the two governments.
