LAS VEGAS (AP) — Evel Knievel’s son is on a collision course with the Walt Disney Co. and Pixar over a movie daredevil character named Duke Caboom. A federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed in Las Vegas accuses the moviemaker of improperly basing the “Toy Story 4” character on Knievel. Las Vegas-based K and K Promotions accuses Disney-owned Pixar of intentionally modeling the Caboom character, voiced by Keanu Reeves in the movie, after Knievel — although Knievel’s name is never mentioned.Knievel's famous stunts in the 1960s and ‘70s included motorcycle jumps over the Caesars Palace fountain in Las Vegas and a rocket shot into Snake River Canyon in Idaho. The Walt Disney Co. says it will defend itself from what it calls Knievel's meritless claims.“Evel Knievel did not thrill millions around the world, break his bones and spill his blood just so Disney could make a bunch of money,” Kelly Knievel said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.Knievel was seriously injured many times during more than 75 motorcycle jumps. He died in 2007 at 69 in Florida of lung disease, not in a crash. 1107

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - On Wednesday, a team of researchers from the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography will begin a 9-day exploration of the deepest parts of Southern California's coast.Sailing on the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, they'll use a Remote Operated Vehicle called "Hercules" to dive to the bottom of the ocean."Part of our mission is purely exploration," says Professor Lisa Levin, one of the researchers on the trip. "We're visiting places nobody's been to."The team will search 9 spots off the coast of Los Angeles and San Diego, located on an area of the Continental Slope called the "Borderlands." With various canyons, ridges, and seamounts, the depths range from 1,300 to 6,500 feet."We've selected sites that were dredged sometimes in the 1930s and 40s," says Levin. "Nobody's actually been down and looked with their own eyes, or with the aid of a camera to see what actually lives down there so that that's the exploration mode we're in."The researchers hope to collect samples of marine life and also minerals like phosphorus and manganese. They'll also look for bacteria in the sediment.Once collected, the team will study if any of it has potential for use by humans, either as medicine or other mineral-based purposes. The exploration will also help establish a baseline of what the ecosystem looks like now, so it can be protected in the future."We'll be looking at the microbes that live in sediments," says Levin. "To look at the potential of these microbes to produce chemicals that can cure cancer or provide aid in industrial processes. There's a variety of ways we humans might be able to use this."Part of the mission will also allow other people to take part in the exploration. The entire voyage will be live-streamed at www.nautiluslive.org and on YouTube and social media. Levin says this will help more people understand the importance of the ocean and their work."We believe very important to make the public aware of what's in the deep ocean and why it's important, why they should care about it, and there's no better way than allowing people to view it with their own eyes," she says. 2149

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The owner of a pharmacy that provided drugs to Nebraska for use in a 2018 execution is expressing remorse for making the sale, but acknowledging that he knew that prison officials wanted them for a lethal injection.Public records released late Thursday show that Community Pharmacy Services, a pharmacy in Gretna, Nebraska, agreed to sell the drugs to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services for two payments totaling ,500.State officials had refused to identify their supplier until the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in May that they cannot withhold that information.Pharmacy owner Kyle Janssen says the drugs supplied to the Nebraska Department of Corrections were used in the August 2018 execution of Carey Dean Moore, the first death by lethal injection in the state. Moore was convicted of murdering two cab drivers in Omaha. In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, Janssen said his pharmacy has not supplied drugs to any department of corrections since the sale and will never again.“I regretted the decision as it does not align with our company’s values to provide the best patient care and customer service to the long-term care industry,” said Janssen. 1210

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new report from La Mesa Police show that crime in the city has decreased dramatically over the last year.According to East County Magazine, most individual crime categories are at a minimum of five-year lows with overall trends around the levels seen by the city in the 1960’s, marking 50-year lows.Crime from the fourth quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2017 decreased by more than 27 percent.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhoodViolent crimes have also seen a significant decrease since 2016. According to a report, La Mesa saw a more than 18 percent decrease in 2017 compared to the same time in 2016.Other crimes that dropped off were robberies, with a decrease of more than 10 percent, and property crimes, with a decrease of more than 28 percent.La Mesa Police Captain Matt Nichols said having the budget to be fully staffed has enabled more officers to be in the field.More outreach within the community has also led to more tips and an emphasis on attacking issues before they grow are also helping keep crime low.Another factor in the city’s success is a focus on the 911 dispatch which is run by the department. In the last six months of 2017, 100 percent of all calls were answered within 15 seconds. 1265
