I am extremely disappointed in the passage of this punitive, short-sighted ordinance. Believing that ticketing and incarcerating homeless individuals will motivate them to pursue other options is naive and cruel. We will continue to advocate for the rights of the homeless to access public spaces and defend their civil liberties whenever any government seeks to restrict them. 385
IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - 40 undocumented immigrants were arrested at two human smuggling houses in South San Diego County Monday, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.Border Patrol agents received information Monday afternoon that immigrants were being housed at the Serenaded apartments on Elder Ave. in Imperial Beach.Upon entry into a unit, agents found 22 Mexican nationals hiding inside, officials said. A second search led to the discovery of 18 more immigrants.Three dozen men between 16 and 49 years old and four women, ages 24 to 46, were taken into custody. One of the men is a previously deported felon with convictions for domestic violence, agents said.“Identifying and dismantling smuggling organizations is our top priority,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott. “These organizations cannot be allowed to operate with impunity inside of our communities.” 909
Imagine applying for the top colleges in the United States hoping to get accepted to at least one.Well, that was the least of Mekhi Johnson's worries when applying for colleges this year. The Baltimore senior said that at six years old he heard a story on the radio about a student who was accepted to all of the Ivy League schools and knew that was his goal."I'm going to do that one day," said Johnson. And on 'Ivy Decision Day' he learned that he finally made it a reality. Johnson, who attends the Gilman School in Batlimore, serves as the President of the Diversity Council, a member of the school's acapella group, school band, and an avid volunteer, all while being a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student with a 98.1 average.More than 280,000 applicants applied to Ivy League schools last year. Out of that number, less than five of them were able to achieve acceptance by all eight colleges. Johnson is not only a 'goal getter' but he's the first Gilman student to achieve this distinction of acceptance. 1072
House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Tuesday that there will be a new mandatory anti-harassment and discrimination training for all House members and staff.Paul said in a statement that the goal is "not only to raise awareness, but also make abundantly clear that harassment in any form has no place in this institution."The announcement came at the heels of a morning-long House hearing on sexual harassment where some members of Congress brought up concerns about sexual harassment in the legislative branch and reviewed the institutions in place for reporting and addressing such behavior. 607
In a survey of 1,250 Americans who have a full-time job, 51% of millennials and 60% of those in Gen Z, say that the pandemic could cause them to delay their retirement. The survey was commissioned by Broadridge Financial Solutions.Millennials also were more likely to modify their retirement plan due to the pandemic. But older age groups were much more likely to adjust their reoccurring expenses and to withdraw from an emergency fund."Now more than ever employees are reliant on their employers to provide them with the proper tools and resources to meet their financial goals," said Cindy Dash, Senior Vice President at Matrix Financial Solutions, a Broadridge company. "What's very interesting is that two-thirds of respondents said they would leave their job if an employer took away a financial wellness benefit that is important to them. In navigating the aftermath of the pandemic, employers are going to face increased pressure to provide enhanced financial wellness benefits, especially if they reduced their offerings during the pandemic. If not, they will risk losing their valued employees." 1113
