EL CAJON, Calif., (KGTV) — The combination of good old fashioned police work and advancements in DNA science helped put an Oregon man behind bars after he killed a La Mesa man in 2006. Today, Hon. Judge Robert Amador announced Zachary Bunney's sentence: 12 years in a California prison for voluntary manslaughter. Before his sentence was announced, Bunney read an apology letter to the family of Scott Martinez. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the pain that this has caused the Martinez family. If I could go back in time and change the course of events that led to this, I would. I know that words cannot bring back to life, but I am truly sorry."Bunney referred to the night of June 27, 2006. La Mesa Police said Bunney went into 47-year-old Scott Martinez's apartment and used a sword to stab Martinez 30 times, killing him. For 12 years, Bunney evaded police, and the case went cold. Until this January, investigators linked the killer's DNA left on a bloody tissue paper, to Bunney's distant relative who was registered on a public genealogy database. "The defendant's DNA was uploaded into the system," Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson said. "A relative of his had uploaded her DNA, and then they do the family tree backwards, and they were able to trace it through that."Detectives discovered that the DNA on the bloody tissue belonged to Oregon resident Zachary Bunney. "I didn't think anything like this would be what cracked the case," Martinez's daughter, Angelina Panek said. By November, Bunney pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for dismissing the murder charge, his stipulated agreement was that he would get 12 years in state prison. "The amount of years that he was on the run, and this is the amount of years he is going to be given as a sentence. It was a sign. And I had to take it," Panek said. Panek said she will always wear her father's ashes in her special necklace, knowing that he is watching over her and her family. "I'm just grateful that this day has come. I couldn't ask for a better Christmas gift." 2070

Dr. Sean Conley, President Donald Trump’s physician, said on Monday that Trump has tested negative for the coronavirus on consecutive days.As Conley’s statement was released to the media on Monday, Trump was setting off for a Florida rally, marking his first voyage out of the White House since returning to the complex last Monday following a three-day stay Walter Reed Medical Center.Previously, Conley said that Trump was no longer infectious, but would not confirm if Trump had tested negative.Meanwhile, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows dodged questions earlier on Monday on whether Trump had tested negative. Trump held his first public event since his coronavirus infection on Saturday, speaking to hundreds of supporters from the White House balcony. The CDC says that for most coronavirus patients, they are no longer contagious after 10 days, but the isolation period may need to be extended to 20 days depending on the severity of the infection. Trump announced he was positive for the virus in the early morning hours of October 2.With Trump no longer considered contagious by doctors, he is planning on resuming an active campaign schedule with events planned in swing states every day through Thursday. 1230

Don't call it a comeback!Honestly, don't call it a comeback. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still retired from the sport of boxing – undefeated record intact. The rumors of his impending UFC debut, on the other hand, are growing and it's a step into an entirely different combat sport. Many people are doubting Mayweather's ability to compete in the UFC, or MMA in general, but all indications are that he's supremely confident. Is there any way that a 40-year-old Mayweather can beat a 30-year-old Conor McGregor in MMA? No.That doesn't mean that there aren't other fighters that'll line up to challenge the self-proclaimed T.B.E (The Best Ever) and there's not like there isn't a precedent for the inexperienced jumping straight into the Octagon. [Cough] C.M. Punk [cough].Floyd Mayweather Sr. recently voiced his opinion on Mayweather Jr. trying his hand at MMA and his answer was shocking, to say the least.“The way I see it, I have to believe that this is where it’s going. The way it looks, I think so,” said Mayweather Sr."As his trainer, no, as his father, no. I want him to have all the money he’s got. The money he’s got, he’s got enough money. Look here, it’s crazy money, man jumping up. He’s his own man though, that’s one thing about him.”Personal feelings aside, Mayweather Sr. did give an honest assessment of Jr.'s chances in the UFC.“I’m gonna tell you the truth about it, I think he can win a few fights but I think it’s best to leave it alone. You can do your own thing but you’re in somebody else’s playground now and holes and stuff is in there. You just can’t do that. Don’t get me wrong, I believe he can beat some of them fighters like the same as he did with the other guy but it ain’t worth it. Any time you did what he's done did, there ain’t no other way he can go right now but backward. That’s the only way he can go right now.”At the end of the day, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is all about money and making more of it. If the UFC can drum up enough money to partner with Mayweather and offer a comparable opponent, [cough] C.M. Punk [cough], then it's far from impossible. At one time people scoffed at McGregor jumping into the boxing ring to challenge an undefeated Floyd Mayweather... We know how that story ended. 2241
