SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire continued to burn overnight in East County as evacuations remain in place.So far, the blaze has scorched 17,345 acres and is 3% contained, as of 6:20 p.m. on Monday. Authorities with the Cleveland National Forest tweeted Monday that the fire had only grown by 408 acres overnight.Monday morning, Cal Fire said new evacuation orders were in place for the areas of Corral Canyon off-road area, Bobcat Meadows, and Los Pinos.Evacuation orders have also been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Evacuation centers have been set up at Steele Canyon High School at 2440 Campo Road and Joan MacQueen Middle School at 2001 Tavern Road.Cal Fire said Sunday night that 11 habitable structures and 25 outbuildings have so far been destroyed in the fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego students Friday are expected to take part in the county's largest ever high school walkout on climate change. "I think it's a pivotal moment for youth," said Katelynn Sutton, a senior at High Tech High in Point Loma and event organizer. Around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sutton will lead dozens of students plan on a walkout. The students will hop on a bus to San Diego's City Hall, where they will attend a public rally for climate action for the rest of the school day."It's going to show adults they need to take action now because we don't have any more time," said Sutton.Around the same time at University City High, senior Summer Camporesi will be leading hundreds of students on a walkout."We'll be meeting in the middle of school and then walking up Genesee [Avenue] to Standley Middle School," said Camporesi.At a park near the school, they will join several hundred middle school students for an hour-long rally, before heading back to class. In all, dozens of schools across San Diego County are expected to take part in the global climate strike, most of them high schools."We're showing it's super important. We're willing to take time out of our education," said Camporesi.Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified and Sweetwater Union High School District, have passed resolutions supporting the youth-led global campaign. SDG&E warning that with high fire danger, some customers may be in the dark for the start of Christmas Eve.Billy Joyce is one of those customers.“You definitely start to think about it as you sleep, as you’re awake,” said Joyce.He lives with his family and ranch full of horses in Alpine. That’s a lot of mouths to feed when you may be in the dark.“Are we going to have to worry about evacuating?” said Joyce. “What’s going to happen to our animals? All that stuff you start to worry about.”He has a generator that will run the well and some lights, but it doesn’t power everything.“You can’t start the oven or you can’t start you range, you can’t have all the lights on,” said Joyce.That rage and oven are vital tools he needs to not only feed his family, but the 75 other people he’s making holiday dinners for.“Knowing the power would go out we had to start cooking at 5:00 this morning. I didn’t know if it was going to get shut down at 9 a.m. or what have you,” said Joyce.The chef and for Dinner Bell SD raised more than ,000 to helps those who would otherwise go hungry. Joyce selflessly taking on a big project while the threat of fire and no electricity still looms.“Starting tomorrow we’re delivering prime rib and ham dinners along with all the fixing and over 0 in gifts per family,” said Joyce. “Just normal people trying to get by, and have young kids, and just bummed they can’t have a Christmas.”Joyce says because he started early, he was able to get all of the cooking done while the power was still on.As of Wednesday night, about 400 customers in Campo, Descanso, and Potrero had been impacted by the safety shutoffs, according to SDG&E. 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people are in custody following a chase through North Park and University Heights Monday evening. The chase started around 5:30 p.m. at an unknown location after police tried to make contact with the suspects following a possible hit-and-run in a stolen vehicle. Mid-chase, officers called off the pursuit after it was determined the suspect was traveling too fast. At one point during the chase, two of the suspects could be seen jumping out of the vehicle near Florida Street and Polk Avenue. A third suspect was detained a short time later. Video from Sky10 shows at least one suspect leaping out of the car on the 3000 block of Palm Street before leaping into brush in a nearby canyon. 725
