First they dealt with a blizzard, and now, the floodwaters. Many of the Midwest’s farmers and ranchers are dealing with the devastating aftermath of the storms as farmer bankruptcies were already up. About 90 percent of Nebraska’s land is used for agriculture in some capacity, making the damage from floodwaters significant.“The disaster Nebraska has been impacted by for the last week is something we have not seen before in our history,” says Steve Wellman, director of Nebraska Department of Agriculture.Wellman says three-quarters of the state’s counties have declared emergencies. The disaster hits at a time when, according to the American Farm Bureau, Midwest farmer bankruptcies were already up almost 20 percent from the previous year.Some farmers who are facing such serious crop or livestock loss may have to throw in the towel on their livelihoods.“It’s a possibility that some producers will not rebound from this, but that’s [going to] be up to the individuals and what their situation is,” Wellman says.Nebraska resident Alex Stepanek didn’t want to sit idly by and watch that happen. Stepanek posted a collage of photos on Facebook last week, and after seeing it go viral, he decided to start a small fundraiser.“I grew up on a farm near St. Paul, Nebraska. Growing up in a small town, you have that feeling of community of wanting to help each other,” Stepanek says. “And I think all of Nebraska is like that in total, especially in times of crisis. And so, I think this was a great time for Nebraska to come together.”Stepanek has now raised almost a quarter of a million dollars. He says he’s working with the state’s farm bureau to make sure at least a third of that goes straight to farmers. The rest of the money raised will go to the towns and communities affected by the floods, says Stepanek. 1831

HOUSTON, Texas -- Only 536 people in the world know what it is like to be blasted from Earth and launched into space. NASA astronaut Stan Love is one of them. Love went into space for the first time in 2008, with NASA’s STS-122 mission. “It was an amazing experience,” said Love, “[of] driving out to the launch pad, strapping into the gigantic steaming hissing spaceship and having the countdown and then all the shaking and thrust of launch coming up into space and the engine shuts off and you are floating weightlessness.” Love grew up in Oregon and as a kid, with mountains all around him, he enjoyed exploring wonders on the Earth. At night though, he’d look to the sky and wondered about exploring space. So, getting there in 2009 was a dream come true, but it also inspired a bigger dream. He wanted to help more people get to space. “I look forward to a world where more people can have the experience of flying in space, and maybe a little more time to enjoy looking out the window and seeing the Earth, seeing the start,” said Love. For the past decade, he has focused on making space exploration possible for more people. “I’m working on the cockpit displays and controls and controls sticks the computer displays and the switches on the Orion spacecraft which is going to fly Artemis missions, “ Love added. The Artemis mission, expected to launch next year, will mark a big moment in space history: a moment where NASA plans on handing over travel to Earth’s lower orbit to the commercial industry. “We are to the point where American industry, not just American government, can handle that,” Love said. “There are a bunch of companies that want to start flying tourists on little suborbital hops.” Those suborbital hops are around 0,000, but as a lower-Earth orbit economy develops, those prices are expected to reduce drastically. In addition, allowing industry to focus on lower Earth’s orbit will allow NASA to focus on Artemis’ true goal of getting back to the moon, and preparing it for a possible long-term human presence. “That’s sort of the next logical step,” Love explains. “We think that in deep craters of the moon’s south pole, there is a lot of water ice and other materials that we can use to help start building a lunar economy based on the moon.”The possibilities from there are truly endless. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday said that Republican lawmakers "must join" Democrats in "condemning the President's xenophobic tweets" and urged Democrats to support a resolution put forward by House Democratic lawmakers."The House cannot allow the President's characterization of immigrants to our country to stand.
