Young people are particularly feeling this with changes in learning and missed milestones.In a new survey of 14 to 24-year-olds, Mental Health America found 24% of those surveyed think training adults would help with their mental health challenges.About 47% said they want to learn more about how to help their own mental health, which is what one new program developed during the pandemic is trying to do.“What we're hearing is that young people are depressed, that they have very little hope for the future, and they want skills to be able to help themselves and their peers,” said Martin Rafferty, CEO and founder of Oregon-based nonprofit Youth Era.The program Uplift by Youth Era is a five-day event and training that is free for young people.“It’s giving them the skillsets to take a look around in their community and say I can be a part of change. The mayor of Austin, Texas, has apologized after reports revealed that he delivered an address urging his constituents to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while he was vacationing in Mexico."I regret this travel," Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, said in a statement, according to The Austin American-Statesman. "My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize."According to the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV in Austin, Adler took the trip after he hosted a small outdoor wedding ceremony for his daughter in early November. Both outlets report that there were about 20 guests at the wedding — more than the recommended guidelines of a limit of 10 per gathering that was in effect at the time.Following the ceremony, KVUE reports that Adler and eight family members boarded a private jet and traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a resort vacation. One day into that trip, on Nov. 9, Adler urged Austinites to stay at home."We need to stay home if you can," Adler said in that video, according to the American-Stateman. "This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. ... We may have to close things down if we are not careful."Adler told the American-Statesman that he consulted with public health officials before hosting the wedding and that all 20 guests were required to undergo rapid COVID-19 tests before attending. He also said that masks were distributed during the reception guests "probably" did not wear them for the duration of the reception.KVUE adds that some of the guests traveled by plane to attend the wedding, including the Seattle-based wedding photographer.Adler isn't the only politician who has failed to heed his own warnings against travel. The pandemic has resulted in a major increase in donated items, so the selection at stores like Goodwill is better than ever before.Families that are trying to make ends meet are benefiting a lot from this surge in donations."It’s not just a little bit. It’s carloads of donations," said Goodwill store manager Sarah Guthrie. "It’s just been crazy. Donation after donation. The first weekend I was here, we did over 1,000 donations between Saturday and Sunday. It's about a car for every 12 seconds."Guthrie has been store manager at the Castle Rock, Colorado, Goodwill location for about a month and a half. She's seen the same thing just about every day since."Right now, our donation center starts at 10 a.m., but starting around 9:15 or so, we start getting cars in our line and a lot of times it’ll wrap all the way around the building and into the street," said Guthrie.They see car after car of people dropping off bags of things they no longer need."Spring cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning this year," said Goodwill Industries International CEO Steve Preston.He says this isn’t just unique to this one store. Donations are up across the country where stores are open, which means now is the time to go shopping for a bargain."That is the logical connection. So, when we get a lot of great donations coming in, it is a super time to hit the store because our category is called “Treasure Hunting”, category in retail, and there are just a ton of treasures in there because so many people have been bringing in those donations," said Preston.Some stores are seeing an increase of up to 50% in donations, and they’re having a hard time storing it in their stores."Many of our local stores are renting additional warehouse space. They’re finding trucks to be able to hold those donations," said Preston.Which is the case back at Guthrie’s store."We store what we can here in the store. We process what we can here in the store. But, a lot of what we get in through our donation line actually goes to our warehouses," said Guthrie.More donations mean selling more goods, which turns into more job training for people who are now finding themselves unemployed. 2179
