SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Rapid Response Network (SDRRN) gave 10News an exclusive look inside the shelter where they help asylum seekers daily. The location of the shelter is kept private to protect the migrants. Rapid Response usually houses people for 24 to 48 hours. When migrants first arrive, they see a doctor the go to an intake room where volunteers help make travel arrangements with family members already inside the U.S. The migrants are fed three times a day and are each given a full set of clothing. Sometimes, the network even funds their travel plans. Volunteers at the shelter tell 10News they are running out of resources to continue helping. They want city, county and state officials to step in and help. In the meantime, they are relying on donations from the community. They've set up a GoFund Me campaign and a travel fund for the migrants who need help with transportation. The city tells 10News they are exploring all options to help.Tuesday, the asylum claims of six Hondurans were accepted for processing, ending a 17-hour standoff, according to the Associated Press. The asylum seekers arrived at the crossing Monday afternoon but after several hours in the U.S., inspectors agreed to process claims of eight unaccompanied children and a mother with her five children. Six more weren’t initially allowed into the country and sat on blanket through the night before authorities processed their claims. The impasse highlighted a U.S. practice to limit entry for asylum seekers at official crossings when they are at full capacity, which it calls "metering" or "queue management." 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pool for inmate fire crews is shrinking after a bill lessening crimes went into effect in California, according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Issac Sanchez.A record breaking wet winter led to a superbloom of epic proportions across San Diego County. New growth that will dry out and turn to tinder this summer, according to fire officials."We are poised daily, year round now to fight wildfire," Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said.Cal Fire relying on every resource to lend a hand if necessary.Our sister station in Redding reported last year one particular kind of crew is running low. Easy to see in their orange fire gear, volunteer inmate crews help firefigthers by completing tasks like digging fire breaks.Last year they had a "brown out" where they had to deactivate a crew to keep the others adequately staffed. "From what I understand it is absolutely an impact," Sanchez said referring to AB 109. The law, passed in 2011 lessened crimes for convicts ultimately letting out hundreds.According to our sister station, the humber of inmates at fire camps dropped from 2013 by 11%. That's 451 inmates.Leaving the CDCR with more work, "to identify and kinda steer eligible candidates into the program," Sanchez said.He said inmates must meet certain criteria like working well with others, being non-violent offenders, and meeting physical requirements."We still have enough folks to staff the crews, it's just a matter of identifying them at this point," Sanchez said.In San Diego County we have four inmate fire camps, in Fallbrook, Warner Springs, Julian and Boulevard. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The widow of a fallen firefighter is opening up about giving birth without the love of her life by her side.Cal Fire Firefighter Engineer Cory Iverson died battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County in December.His wife, Ashley, was pregnant with their second daughter at the time. Taylor Ivy Frances Iverson was born just a few weeks ago."She looks just like this little twin, especially right after she came out it was a big relief to have her out and to see him again and feel like I was looking into his eyes again," said Ashley.It's been five months since Cory died, but Ashley said it still doesn't seem real. "People will say to me, I can't possibly imagine going through that, and my response is neither can I, cause it really doesn't feel like it's me going through all of this," said Ashley.She was surrounded by family and friends in the hospital the day Taylor was born, but it was the voicemail she played from her late husband while in the delivery room that helped her get through labor."All the doctors were crying, but it just flipped right then and there. It's the most special voice mail I have from him basically talking about how special our relationship is and how grateful he is for us," said Ashley.Ashley wants to honor Cory's memory by starting a foundation to help first responders deal with the trauma they see on the job."The things that they see and experience are things that the human brain can't just push out, it needs to be worked through," said Ashley.As heartbroken as she is, she's always thinking about the men and women who were on the fire lines with Cory the day he died."Through trust and communication, these men and women can heal," said Ashley. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Fire Marshall explained to 10News in an exclusive interview Wednesday why dozens of residents in a Little Italy apartment complex were trapped when a vandal flooded their stairwell.February 25th, around midnight residents heard the alarm go off, their only route of escape was to head to the stairs, but once they reached the bottom, they realized there was too much water to get out. When they climbed back up the stairs, they realized, they were locked in."It felt like a waterfall coming down on you," Resident Ryan Lange said."It was a freak accident," Fire Marshall Chief Doug Perry said the issue is the doors were supposed to unlock whenever an emergency alarm goes off. "When you're in an interior stair it's supposed to be openable from the egress side and ingress side without any special knowledge," Chief Perry said.Normally the locked hallway doors act as a way to protect residents from intruders. Chief Perry said the building management is being notified of the problem and given three options to fix it.Those are:-Install hardware on the doors so they unlock automatically when an alarm is triggered.-Install a button in the lobby so firefighters may unlock the doors during an emergency.-Install a phone on the 5th floor so anyone in the hallway can call a 24/7 service to unlock the doors remotely during an emergency.Chief Perry said the issue would've become apparent during their annual inspection, "we were right about the time frame where in the next two or three months we would've been in that building, we walk the whole building, check all the life safety stuff."So how did this fall through the cracks in the first place? The building's approved plans on file show the fire code was missed in the developing stages. "The onus is truly on the architect, because the arcitect is the design professional who knows these codes inside and out," Chief Perry said human error is always a concern.Thanks to Chief Perry, a fix is on the way or 1810 State Street. "Channel 10 should take credit for it because of the phone call that you made to me and got me involved with it," he said.If the building was one story taller it would have fallen under more strict codes and this would not have happened.
