SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sandy Sim came all the way from Fallbrook just to find out that she was locked out of 101 Ash Street. She was one of multiple people who came to the downtown building thinking the skyscraper was open for city business. Instead, it was shuttered Wednesday after the county found traces of asbestos on one the 17th floor. "I think the building should be removed, should be brought down, and just put up another building. It will probably be cheaper too," said Ignacio Alcaraz, a Spring Valley resident who had just left City Hall. The city inked the deal for the former Sempra Headquarters in 2017 with the plan of moving 1,100 employees into it to save on rent. But the building has remained vacant for all but about a month since then, after the city discovered numerous problems and needed repairs. City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said. Bry has forwarded her request to the city's auditor. Meanwhile, the Mayor's office has authorized the city to hire an outside consultant to determine how this deal came to be. 2005

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University has suspended over a dozen fraternities after a student who attended a reported fraternity event was hospitalized this week with unknown injuries.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday.SDSU clarified Saturday that a campus fraternity is "alleged to have been involved in possible misconduct" in the Wednesday event.Prior to Wednesday, the school says six IFC organizations were under suspension and four were under investigation, leading to de la Torre's decision. The suspension affects all 14 IFC fraternities with more than 1,400 members. A close friend says that Hernandez fell off his bed Wednesday night and hit his head, suffering a head injury. His roommate contacted her after the fall, and she came over to help put him back into his bed. She didn't know anything was wrong until the next morning, when she checked on Hernandez. She said his mouth was foaming, his lips were purple and his skin was yellowing. She performed CPR on him until emergency crews arrived.According to university police, officers were called to a residence hall in the 6100 block of Montezuma Road Thursday morning in response to a student needing medical attention. The student was taken to a nearby hospital, police said."University Police officers quickly arrived to the location of the incident and provided appropriate aid. The student was then transported to a San Diego area hospital," San Diego State University Police Department said.According to university officials, they believe the student had attended a fraternity event the night he fell off his bed.The school did not comment on the student's condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Smoke from a fire burning in Mexico is visible throughout San Diego Thursday. The blaze is burning roughly five miles into Mexico amid hot, windy conditions. According to Cal Fire, the fire poses no threat to the U.S. at this time. The agency said, however, it is monitoring the situation and will send a response if the fire threatens San Diego County. A red flag warning was issued for much of San Diego County through Friday. “Winds will get stronger during the day today peaking overnight into Friday early afternoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego welcomed several adorable birds to the flock this week, well, "flamboyance."The park welcomed seven Caribbean flamingo chicks to the mix, ranging from 2 to 11 days old, recently.The birds have entered breeding season, SeaWorld says, and cute gray, fluffy newborns will be available to see at Flamingo Cove.RELATED: SeaWorld offers Inside Look as additional experienceFlamingo eggs incubate for about 28 days before hatching, according to the park. Both the male and female take turns sitting on top of the nest to incubate the egg.Once hatched, both parents feed the chick by producing a secretion called, "crop milk."While flamingos are known for the bright pink feathers, they are born with gray or white down feathers.
