SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of a newly formed Guardian Angels chapter in Pacific Beach went on patrol for the first time Saturday night.Members of the Sacramento Chapter traveled to San Diego to train the new volunteers. Administrator Sarah Bonesteel joined after a neighborhood crime walk, saying "crime is getting out of control, we've lost our parks, and our library and things like that."RELATED: Guardian Angels look to start street patrols in Pacific BeachThe Guardian Angels are a national crime prevention nonprofit organization that started in New York in 1979. The group said it created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries.While the group has several programs to prevent crime, the most visible are its street patrols. The Pacific Beach Chapter hopes to provide a safe environment after the bars close.Guardian Angels patrol in groups of at least two while wearing red berets and uniforms, and say the patrols are meant to serve as a visual deterrent and aim to avoid violent confrontations.Angels on patrols are unarmed but trained in self-defense to protect themselves in case a situation becomes physical. They hope they do not have to use their training.The organization conducts background checks on new members to ensure everyone's safety. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Law enforcement agencies across San Diego Country will have extra officers stationed near busy railroad intersections this week as part of "Operation Clear Track. "The week-long enforcement ties into National Rail Safety Week, from Sept. 22-28.In Carlsbad, officers will be near Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue during the lunch hour, reminding people to only cross when there are no trains nearby."The goal is to raise railroad safety awareness through education and the enforcement of state railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws," the Carlsbad Police Department said in a statement.Amtrak officers will also keep an eye on well-known trouble spots along the coast, like a stretch in Del Mar where surfers and hikers frequently cross over tracks to get to the beach."It's not safe to cross here," said surfer Cooper Baker, who admitted he does it regularly. "But, if people have their wits about them and make good choices about where they're stepping, it's totally safe. So I just try to make sure I know a train is not going to be here and that my footing is sure. I think it's fine."A recent study found San Diego is the 9th deadliest county for accidental train casualties in the U.S. from 2013-2017. In that time, 44 people were killed while trying to cross tracks. Los Angeles County topped the list, with 110 deaths in that time."It's definitely good to give people a reminder that trains are coming through," said surfer Shayne Jensen. "You gotta be safe."In the last year, the North County Transit District has taken steps to make trains safer. In 2018, they equipped all of their trains with Positive Train Control, a new technology that automatically slows trains down if any danger is detected.Meanwhile, there have been calls in Del Mar for more railroad crossings to be built. Residents are asking for more options, so they're not tempted to cross illegally. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime is rolling its dockless scooters and bikes out of San Diego, a month after a hearing officer ruled the company could keep its operating permit.Lime announced Thursday they would not be renewing their permit to operate in San Diego but would monitor the opportunity to return in the future.“As part of our path to profitability, Lime has made the difficult decision to exit San Diego and focus our resources on markets that allow us to meet our ambitious goals for 2020," a statement from Lime said. "We’re grateful to our team members, riders, Juicers and communities who supported us throughout this journey. We appreciate the partnership we’ve enjoyed with San Diego and remain hopeful we can reintroduce Lime back into the community when the time is right."RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawThe company said it tried to work with city leaders on compliance and safety concerns, but was instead forced to defend its permit — which it did successfully. Lime added that the city's most recent regulations have led to a decrease in ridership and that the city has not been transparent when it comes to towing by city-contracted and private towing companies.In December, city council leaders voted to ban electric scooters from the city's boardwalks at Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Park Bayside Walk, and La Jolla Shores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s been nearly one year since the deadly University City poolside shooting. Kion Gould was hosting his 48th birthday party at his apartment complex. Right before the shooting began, Gould said he saw a man lying on a lounge chair by himself, so he invited him to join the festivities.That’s when the man, later identified as Peter Selis, pulled out his gun.The only thing Gould could do is raise his arm. His bone was miraculously able to stop the bullet.RELATED: Body camera footage captured during University City shooting released“I didn’t think it was a real threat until he basically raised the gun toward my head, that was the moment I realized I should have done something right before that, that’s the biggest thing that bothers me and bothers me to this day," said Gould.Police eventually shot and killed Selis after a shootout.
