Cooking shows are popular and can be addicting to watch. However, one self-proclaimed diet guru believes shows like the "The Great American Baking Show" should come with a warning that it advocates obesity.Do cooking shows really have an effect on how much watchers end up consuming? Eight in 10 adults watch cooking shows, according to research by MarketingCharts.com.    Many of those cooking shows don’t necessarily promote healthy eating. But Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor of psychology at University of Colorado Denver, says you can’t correlate obesity to cooking shows.“The overweight and obesity issue in this country is around--depending on your numbers-- is 60 to 70 percent of the population,” says Masters. “And you’re talking about a very small population even watch these shows, much less we could say are influenced by them.”   However, Marketing Charts research also found that 57 percent of those who watch these cooking shows purchase food as a direct result of something they saw on the show.   "Some people will plant a thought that they weren't having before,” Dr. Masters explains. “Will it actually lead to action in a particular instance? That's going to depend on a whole lot of other factors."  Dr. Masters says you might have people make or buy fatty, sugary food after watching a cooking show, but that doesn't mean these shows are the direct cause of people in America being overweight.   "I think what's more likely is the audience attracted to those shows--maybe an audience that's more attracted to that kind of eating anyway--and finds something in the show that's of interest to them."   1689

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republicans in the Ohio House of Representatives, led by State Rep. John Becker (R-Union Township, Clermont County), announced Monday that they have drafted articles of impeachment against Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) in regards to his COVID-19 response, which the state rep described as “abuses of power,” despite the governor’s recent all-time high approval rating.Becker drafted 10 articles of impeachment against DeWine, stating the governor “has violated the Ohio and United States Constitutions, as well as multiple sections of the Ohio Revised Code.”The violations, Becker said, stem from closing in-person polling during the primary election while allowing other businesses to remain open, and the mask mandate.In his announcement, Becker expressed disdain for the mask mandate DeWine ordered in an attempt to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Ohio as cases began to surge across the state in July. The state rep claimed that forcing Ohioans to wear a mask or covering as a condition of employment makes “Ohio a hostile work environment.” He went on to say “many Ohioans find the mask mandate offensive, degrading, humiliating, and insulting.”Becker made the following statement regarding his efforts to impeach DeWine:"I kept holding out hope that we wouldn’t get to this place. For months and months, I’ve been hearing the cries of my constituents and of suffering people from every corner of Ohio. They keep screaming, “DO SOMETHING!” They are hurting. CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed and decapitated his wife.Police arrested Michael Parks of Crawfordsville on Friday after investigators found his wife's body and severed head, according to court documents filed Monday.On Aug. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a report of a deceased woman, identified as Hope Parks, whose headless body was found on County Road 225 on the Sugar Creek Bridge.Michael Parks told Crawfordsville police his wife had been missing since Aug. 18 following an argument. He said the last time he saw her was when she left their house and got into a silver or white Honda that was driven by an unknown person.During a search of the couple's house, police found dried blood in the gravel driveway in front of an overhead garage door, on the garage floor with a shoe print and on an exterior deck. Officers also discovered a trail of dried blood in the grass.Later in the day, investigators found a human head with a bullet wound buried in the cellar of the house.Police also found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, which matched a spent .22 caliber cartridge casing that was found in the yard next to a trail of blood. A phone believed to have belonged to Hope Parks was found in a safe in the home's bedroom. Investigators also found a man's shoe with tread similar to the footprint in the blood droppings in the garage.The next day, investigators discovered a blue tarp that was stained with blood, along with hair and plastic bags containing blood-covered rags that were found in the hole where the severed head was buried.An initial hearing for Michael Parks was held Tuesday. Consumers are looking for greater protections for their personal and financial information in the wake of the Equifax data breach. Many have decided to take precautions and put their credit on ice: a credit freeze.A credit freeze aims to block anyone from opening new accounts in your name. The catch is that the block applies to legit inquires, too. So it's not a great idea if you're shopping for a home or an auto loan. But when you're not looking to take out any loans or open any lines of credit, it can be a financial lifesaver.The Equifax hack, in which the names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and driver's license numbers of 143 million people were exposed, may create a new normal in which protections previously viewed as cumbersome -- like credit freezes -- are now a valued line of defense."A security freeze is the most effective measure against 'new account' identity theft, because it stops thieves from using the consumer's stolen information," says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.Here's what you need to know about freezing your credit:What is a credit freeze?A credit freeze limits who can see your credit report information. The goal is to prevent anyone from opening any new accounts. It doesn't damage your credit or stop your credit report from evolving by your own actions.Your credit information will still be released to your existing creditors and any debt collectors who may come calling.But, if you want to open new lines of credit, you'll need to lift the freeze first. This can be done temporarily, either for a set time or for a particular party, like a landlord or lender.The costs to freeze and lift the freeze on your credit vary based on where you live and for each credit reporting agency, but commonly range from to per agency.If you're a resident of certain states -- like Maine or South Carolina?-- it's free.In response to public outcry, Equifax announced that fees to freeze your credit will be waived for the next 30 days.But even that doesn't totally protect your information since your data isn't fully frozen until it is on ice at all three credit bureaus. The other bureaus have their own fees. It's also unclear whether Equifax would still charge you a fee to lift the freeze. The company did not immediately respond to request for comment.Consumer protection organizations like the National Consumer Law Center are further calling for Equifax to waive the fees for credit freezes at all three credit bureaus.How is it different from fraud alerts or other credit monitoring?The credit reporting companies do little to make getting a credit freeze easy: you have to ask each of them individually, pay a fee (usually) to put it in place, ask each of them specifically to lift the freeze and often pay another fee. That's because your data is the product that they sell to other people and companies. If you freeze it, it isn't as valuable.As such, they are more likely to offer you fraud alerts and other credit monitoring products. These are services that will let you know when someone is looking at your credit and may contact you about a new account opened in your name. It's helpful, but it is often after the fact."Equifax is offering something that it says functions like a credit freeze," says Mike Litt, consumer program advocate with US Public Interest Research Group. "The problem is that it is incomplete protection and it only lasts for a year. What we're recommending is that people don't bother with the package Equifax is offering and just place freezes with the three credit bureaus instead."Can I still get a credit card or loan?Sure. When your credit is frozen you can continue to operate your financial life just as you typically would. The only notable thing is that you will need to notify the credit bureaus to lift the freeze before you ask a lender to approve you for credit.If you are able to determine which credit agency your potential lender is using to run your credit, you can even save yourself some fees by just requesting the freeze to be lifted on that one.The reporting agencies tell you that this may delay a legitimate credit request.But for those who don't feel comfortable with the way the credit reporting agencies are handling their treasure trove of personal information, a notification to the agencies and day or so delay may be a fair price to pay for added security.The agencies advise you to plan ahead and lift a freeze a few days before actually applying for new credit.How do I freeze my credit?With millions of people feeling vulnerable after the hack and scrambling to secure their most important information, getting a credit freeze has been more difficult than usual in the past few days. Users on Twitter report trying again and again to secure credit freezes, with both the website and phone systems failing.Keep trying.To set up your own credit freeze, go to the freeze page at each credit agency's website individually: Equifax, TransUnion,?Experian.You will be asked to provide information. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A Navy shooting range in Coronado is at the center of a legal dispute over possible unsafe lead exposure. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner uncovered the history of reports of serious lead problems.10News spent more than five weeks continuously calling and emailing the Navy, asking what happened. Ultimately, the Navy responded, in part, that it would not go into any detail.Toxic lead exposure is a serious threat at shooting ranges. The gun smoke releases the metal into the air.Across the United States, federal agents have done hundreds of inspections for lead violations.Just south of the Hotel del Coronado, along the Silver Strand, sits the heavily guarded Naval Amphibious Base. 10News was unable to get video of the shooting range in question because we weren’t granted access on-base, but we can show you the federal reports that detail a history of concern. Per inspection paperwork, the indoor shooting range address is 3632 Guadalcanal Road.Across the country, a separate range that's not affiliated with the Navy had hired Don Haines as its safety officer. He says he'd sometimes be at the range seven days a week and for hours at time.“My friends noticed some changes in me, complaining about being tired all the time. [There was] some irritability and some difficulty understanding some things when we were having discussions,” he says.Doctors told him he'd been poisoned by lead.Toxic levels of the metal can cause serious problems like brain damage, kidney disease, and even death.Dr. Gabriel Filippelli is the director of the Center for Urban Health at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. “Current lead contamination still has tremendous impacts to a bunch of different sectors,” he says.Filippelli explains that as people shoot guns, lead particles are left behind on the walls, counters, and floors. Sometimes the primer used as padding to eject the bullet is made of lead that bursts into the air. “You have to remember that the primer is exploding right by people's faces,” he adds.There are now questions about whether Haines' story could be similar to what may have happened to an employee at the shooting range in Coronado.A report from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) shows that the range was issued a violation in 2014 that has to do with an employee being exposed to lead.Two other preliminary violations for possible lead exposure were also reported that year. Both were deemed "serious" but were deleted following an informal settlement agreement, which required the shooting range to make changes.Although the findings are from five years ago, the military is still dealing with them.In July, a spokesperson for Naval Special Warfare (NSW) sent 10News the following statement:“NSW's number one priority is the health, safety, and readiness of our people -- military and civilian. We take reports of safety issues seriously. In the end OSHA and the Navy agreed to an amended report to which we fully implemented the agreed upon amended requirements. I'm not going to get into the details you are asking due to on-going litigation with an individual who was involved in these matters. We are not facilitating interviews at this time because of that litigation.”OSHA is in charge of inspecting gun ranges and lead levels in 28 states. The Administration reports that people can still work their jobs when their blood lead level is 40 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dL).However, the National Institute of Health claims that no amount of lead in your blood is safe.When Haines was first hired, the range checked his blood and found it was 3 μg/dL. Just 8 months later, he says it jumped to 60 μg/dL.This spring, the government reported, in part, that OSHA is “exploring regulatory options to lower blood lead levels in affected workers”.It’s finally considering dropping the levels from 40 μg/dL to less than 10 μg/dLin adults. Businesses can protect you with a proper air filtration system, with air blowing away, toward the targets. Experts say you can protect yourself by wearing masks when shooting or working at a range, wearing gloves while firing or cleaning up and washing your shooting clothes separately from other clothing. They’re small steps to take to prevent the little-known threat that even Haines, a range safety officer, wasn't aware of. “They could go for years and they may not recognize the symptoms. Had I not had someone who was observant, I probably would not have attached it to the lead,” he adds. 4538
