Just ask Lemon Grove resident Tiffany Klein, who had to explain to her 3-year-old son Nicholas, why the sky looked so smokey and gloomy over the last week."Ash was falling and the sky was dark, which was odd. So Nicholas asked me what was going on, he didn't quite understand."And when Tiffany told her son about the dangerous fires burning near Alpine, his response was a bit surprising for a young child."He asked if people were getting hurt," said Tiffany. "I told him, as of that time, that no one had gotten hurt, but some people had lost their homes. So he asked me if he could raise money by doing a lemonade stand."Despite being 3-years-old, Nicholas wanted to lend a hand, even if he wasn't quite sure what was going on."I wanted to help the people that lost their homes,"said Nicholas.And how could any parent say no to such a great request."I was mind blown. He said yes mommy, I want to help them find their homes, because he assumed they were lost."So the family went to work building a lemonade stand, and squeezing their own lemons."He had to build his own lemonade stand, and he went out and picked lemons from a lemon tree."By selling lemonade, he hoped to raise 7 dollars."Seven dollars is huge to him and i said OK, let's try to get that goal."Nicholas easily raised the 7 dollars, and a whole lot more."He doesn't understand what he did yet," says his mom. "Because he's over 500 dollars right now."Nicholas plans to donate the money to the Burn Institute in a ceremony on Friday. 1648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - National Voter Registration Day is a reminder to sign up to vote in the next election, a deadline many Americans miss. Voters must be registered at least 15 days before an election. If they fail to meet this requirement, they can conditionally register and vote provisionally, according to the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Voting materials, including sample ballots, are mailed starting 29 days before an election. If you changed your name, moved, or want to switch political parties, you must re-register to vote with a new application. In order to register to vote in California, you must be a U.S. citizen, a state resident, at least 18 years old before the next election, not in prison or on parole for a felony, and not declared mentally incompetent by the court. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of the most anticipated panels of Comic-Con Day 2 was "The Walking Dead" Panel. Fans left Hall H with several surprises for the upcoming season. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. It is entirely covered with "The Walking Dead" themed tattoos, proving to us, his extreme loyalty to the show.Friday's panel featured the showrunner, Angela Kang, her executive producers, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero, as well as cast members Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming. This was 12-year-old Cailey Fleming's first Comic-Con experience, and she stole the show. Fans were impressed by her ability to handle the crowd and mingle with the cast."She is awesome," Calderon said about her. "The sheer fact that she doesn't seem to be scared of anything that the show can throw at her."Perhaps the biggest surprise was from Danai Gurira, who plays "Michonne." Fighting back tears, she announced her departure from the show, after Season 10."This has been one of the purest joys of my life to play this role, and to be amongst these people," Gurira said. Fans teared up as they listened to her farewell speech. Gurira thanked her fans for their unconditional support. She said it was a decision she did not take lightly, and that she hoped to follow her other callings. "My heart breaks," fan Katherine Butler said. "But I wish her luck because I loved her in Marvel. So she's going to do well no matter where she goes."As for Calderon, he says his tattoo is forever. "Michonne" will always be with him, even after her departure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Plans for a temporary observation wheel in the heart of Balboa Park have taken a step forward to becoming reality.Thursday, the Balboa Park Committee voted 7-1, with one member abstaining, to support plans for the temporary Balboa Park Star attraction, which were originally introduced by the Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America back in October.In a statement from the Assistant Deputy Director Christina Chadwick of the city's Parks & Recreation Department, while the idea has gained the committee's support, a number of potential impacts still need to be sorted out before the wheel is installed.RELATED:The Balboa Park Star Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkIn-Depth: Balboa Park's future unfolds during COVID-19 pandemic"The Park and Recreation Department has identified a number of potential operational impacts that must be contemplated in order to fully appreciate the feasibility of this project, and given the Balboa Park Committee’s conceptual approval tonight, we will now be moving forward with the goal of getting this installation up and running on a temporary basis," Chadwick wrote.Some of those outstanding issues involve the site plan, public safety, liability, permitting, and institutional outreach.Ultimately, the hope is to see a Sky Wheel installed on a short-term basis in Plaza de Panama to attract more visitors back to the park, pending coronavirus-related restrictions on businesses, museums, and attractions.The gondolas on the observation wheel would be enclosed, climate-controlled, and sanitized after each ride. Local, state, and federal safety protocols amid the pandemic would also be observed and masks would be required.Tickets for the wheel are estimated to run - per rider and would be sold online and at the attraction. 1826
