When you step inside a restaurant in eastern Idaho, it’s no secret which menu item is a favorite one."I don’t know what other kind of potatoes we would have if we didn’t have Idaho potatoes," said FaDale Fisher, who works at Big Jud's in Ashton, Idaho.The restaurant is feeling life again in a state that produces more potatoes than any other.“Now, we’re almost back to full force, even though we are still limited on tables, business is still really well," she said.Idaho potatoes are also an important ingredient at Grandpa's Southern BBQ in Idaho Falls.Owner Lloyd Westbrook says take-out orders have helped his restaurant thrive this year. He's been in business since 1995.“You will find hospitality in restaurants out West, but it’s just not quite southern hospitality," he said.While the sight of spirited kitchens could give hope the food industry is beginning to rebound, for some of the potato farmers who work close by in this state, that hope feels very far away.“It’s unclear if we’re even going to be able to stay in business," said Doug Hess.Hess' family has farmed his land since the 1800s.“When you look around, you realize you’re actually farming with not your equity but your grandfather's, your father's equity," Hess said.Hess’ specialty is seed potatoes. They are grown free of virus and genetic defects.He sells to commercial farmers, who use the seed potatoes to grow the ones you eventually eat.Hess says the pandemic caused a food-chain reaction that hurt his business. When restaurants closed, the distributors that deliver potatoes to kitchens pulled back on buying from commercial growers, and those growers bought less of his already grown crop."We were anticipating a bag of a potatoes," Hess said. "Click of a switch if you could get rid of it for ."He was left with a pile of potatoes, and he donated about a quarter of his crop.He's now planted significantly less as COVID-19 cases rise.The federal government has stepped in to help the potato industry, but Hess says the struggles of he and his fellow farmers could last long after the pandemic."It could be three or four years out before this thing stabilizes," he said.For this lifelong farmer, it's a generational pressure.“Every time I sit at the table and I look at my sons thinking, ‘Will I be able to pass this on as my father passed on to me?’” Hess said. 2361
When Tim Frye retired from his job as a project manager in 2017, he envisioned traveling the U.S. in an RV with his fiancée. But not long after spending about a quarter of a million dollars on a luxurious, 39-foot 2014 Forest River Berkshire motorhome, his fiancée left him — and he was left with a very expensive vehicle in his yard.“I could sell it, but I’d lose a ton of money because I had just bought it and wouldn’t be able to get the full value back,” Frye said. “Or I could rent it out.”Frye, who lives in Flower Mound, Texas, opted for the latter, posting his motorhome on online RV rental marketplace Outdoorsy, which is essentially Airbnb for motorhomes and campervans. Owners coordinate with renters on a meetup spot and handle the vehicle maintenance and cleaning. Outdoorsy handles the booking requests, transactions and RV insurance.In his first two years renting his RV on the site, business already was good for Frye. But everything changed when coronavirus hit. And for Frye’s RV business, things changed for the better.“This is the king of side hustles for me,” Frye said.The coronavirus impact on RV rentingPortland-based Adam Clayton has two 2017 Winnebago Travato campervans available for rent on Outdoorsy. Before the pandemic, Clayton said both RVs were booked solid through October 2020. Given his location about 15 minutes from Portland International Airport, Clayton frequently catered to international visitors looking to road trip through the Pacific Northwest.But when the pandemic hit, all his out-of-towners immediately cancelled their reservations. With Oregon state parks closed, business was slow in March and April. But as parks reopened, Clayton saw a quick uptick in locals. Eager travelers converted from cruising to camping. They ignored international travel in favor of national parks. And that meant a sudden uptick in people looking to rent or buy RVs.It was a similar situation for Andrew Carson, who rents his RVs out of his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia.“As of early March, we had 11 reservations set up throughout the summer, yet once COVID hit, every single one canceled,” he said. “We panicked, thinking, ‘what have we gotten ourselves into?’ But once things started opening back up — around April — RVing became the hottest thing in America.”By May, he had already been booked for 120 days straight. Frye was especially lucky; he never even saw an initial dip.“People came to me because they had trips planned, but suddenly their hotels had canceled on them,” he said. “People were scrambling to find places to stay.”Frye says his bookings are up an average of 70% year-over-year. But while business is up, most RV owners agree that the type of business has massively shifted. It’s a lot of first-timers (Carson estimates about 70% of rentals this year were to first-timers), which means owners have to spend more time with renters during the initial walkthrough, and there’s higher odds of renters running into issues simply for being novices.With the usual RV-friendly spots off the list as music festivals remain canceled and many ski resorts are still closed, people are also shifting where they’re headed.“I’ve already booked two customers who are driving my RV to their parents’ houses,” Clayton said. “Rather than stay inside the parents’ house, they’re going to park in the driveway.”How much money can you make renting out an RV?RV rental marketplace RVshare estimates that owners of Class A RVs (those are the largest, most luxurious of the motorized RVs), can earn as much as ,000 per year through their site.There are also some costs involved, however:Commission fees: Online RV rental marketplaces typically charge a commission. Outdoorsy takes a 20% cut of the total reservation cost. RVshare is less transparent about fees since the commission rate correlates with revenue, but owners say it’s typically a 25% cut.Monthly payments, insurance and maintenance: If you’re financing your RV, you’ll have to make monthly loan payments, which likely also means interest and fees. Plus, factor in expenses like maintenance and RV insurance.Storage: RV storage can also be pricey if you don’t have your own garage to store it in. Expect to pay at least ,500 a year — and even more if you’re in a high-cost-of-living area or have an especially large vehicle.But still, it’s a lucrative side hustle. Frye said after accounting for all those costs, he still pockets ,000 annually on his single RV.Virginia-based Carson owns two Class C motorhomes (those are often referred to as mini-motorhomes). Between insurance and monthly payments on his two RVs, he pays about ,400 a month in RV-business related expenses — which easily pay for themselves. Carson said that this summer he grossed ,500 per month between both RVs.Considerations when getting into an RV-renting side hustleHigher-end vehicles typically work out to be better long-termFrye’s RV is a Class A motorhome, which is essentially a full house on wheels that’s big enough to stand up straight inside, has a full kitchen and bathroom, and sleeps multiple people.While they’re more expensive, Frye said he believes Class A motorhomes more easily retain their value versus a cheaper RV, like a campervan. He also said that since the RV is more expensive for renters, it attracts clientele who are more likely to take care of it.It’s good income, but it’s not passive incomeOwning an RV requires regular work. There’s annual maintenance, but there’s also work to be done with every rental. Between doing laundry, power washing the outside and wiping down the inside, Carson estimates he spends three to six hours cleaning the RV after every trip. He also spends about 30 minutes on the pre-rental walkthrough (and sometimes more if the renter is a newbie). Plus, he spends hours each week scheduling and communicating with renters online.Accept that they won’t be returned in perfect conditionWith strangers driving your RV, it’s bound to get dinged up, especially with more first-time RV renters. Even though RV experts will usually tell you they’re not as hard to drive as you might think, they’re still much tougher to navigate than your average small sedan.“You can’t be too emotionally attached,” Frye said.While sites like Outdoorsy do provide insurance, Frye still acknowledged that putting your RV up for rent is not for you if you’ll be flustered by every little scratch.“If they’re seriously damaged, Outdoorsy insurance pays for it,” Clayton said. “But if it’s something smaller — like a faucet breaks — I just fix it. It’s a business, so treat it like a business. If something gets scratched, don’t freak out.”Location mattersFrye attributes his Texas location as a big factor in maintaining consistent bookings year round, as opposed to owners up north who experience a dip in bookings once it gets colder.And specific locations within that area make a difference too. Carson lives just off of Interstate 95, the main highway along the East Coast, which means easy access for road trippers headed up to Maine or down to Florida.Getting into the RV business nowWith road trips surging in popularity, it’s a lucrative time to adopt RV renting as a side hustle. But if you don’t yet actually have an RV to rent out, good luck.Just before COVID-19 was part of the lexicon, Clayton had run the numbers and was committed to buying a third RV to build his small business sometime in 2020. While many hair salon and gym owners across the country understood why they had to shut down during the pandemic, those closures created a financial hardship. A hardship that some are finding difficult to overcome."Economically, it's been devastating to us. We opened up our gym three years ago and sort of like a little miracle. We took over an existing gym that was probably not fitting the community. We came in there with our life savings, we opened up this beautiful gym and we were becoming very successful," said John Pena, the owner of GYM NYC in New York City.Pena says their business was shut down for nearly six months. Now, he's finally excited to reopen. Pena applied for and received money from the Paycheck Protection Program but it only did so much. "There is no income coming in from the business, obviously. The extra 0 on the unemployment has really been a big help but that’s going away. I’ve been able to pay my bills and that's it," said Pena. Pena and other gym owners in New York are hoping for more government help for small businesses to help them get back on their feet."In general, I think there is a set of overhead expenses that I’m sure owners in any industry would tell you play a huge factor. Rent, utilities, payroll, insurance etc., and those are fixed costs that you sort of wonder whether they’ll be any concessions made," said Elvira Yambot, COO of Tone House.In Tennessee, the Shelby County Commission is offering small brick and mortar businesses ,000 each as part of the Beautiful Comeback Grant. "It applies to any business that is in the personal care contact industry. When it comes to Olympic tickets, the Latin expression “caveat emptor” often applies: “Let the buyer beware.”The unprecedented postponement of the Tokyo Olympics has left buyers of millions of tickets in a quandary. Will the games happen next year? Will non-Japanese fans be allowed? Will there be any fans? How will health and travel restrictions be applied? Will there be a vaccine and quarantines?Tokyo organizers and the International Olympic Committee say the games will open on July 23, 2021, and the competition schedule remains virtually unchanged. But they’ve offered few details, and specifics aren’t expected until the fall and into next year as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.“We have some people saying there is no way Tokyo 2020 is happening, and other people are saying it’s absolutely going to happen and ‘I’m going to be there for every moment of it,’” said Ken Hanscom, the chief operating officer of the Los Angeles-based firm TicketManager.Hanscom isn’t connected with Olympic ticketing, but his company manages big-event tickets for corporate clients. He’s also organized a popular Facebook page that’s a go-to for Tokyo ticket information.Olympic ticketing is always confusing, a maze of interests including official ticket resellers, national Olympic committees and sports federations, sponsors and advertisers, and local organizers and the IOC.Invariably at every Olympics, an event is listed as “sold out” although the venue is half-filled because some VIPs or hospitality guests haven’t shown up.Four years ago in Rio de Janeiro, IOC member Patrick Hickey of Ireland was arrested for scalping tickets. He has maintained his innocence. Japan has passed an anti-scalping law specifically because of the games, though it has several loopholes.The Chinese e-commerce, data and technology company Alibaba is taking over ticketing for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and likely beyond. Alibaba owns Damai, one of China’s largest ticketing platforms, and is also an IOC sponsor.Olympic tickets for residents of Japan were sold through the local organizing committee. It says refunds for the postponement “will be carried out” no earlier than this fall. This seems straightforward.It’s more complicated for non-Japan residents.Those outside Japan purchase through so-called Authorized Ticket Resellers appointed by national Olympic committees. They can charge a 20% handling fee on tickets, and are allowed to package desirable tickets with premium hotel packages. They also set the foreign currency exchange rates.In Brazil four years ago, CoSport, the ATR for the United States, used a currency exchange rate that drove up ticket prices.There are dozens of ATRs, and they’ve applied varied terms, conditions and deadlines for seeking refunds. The largest ATRs are: CoSport/Jet Set Sports, the only ATR for the United States; Cartan, which covers much of Latin America; MATCH Hospitality for Brazil and Russia; Kingdom Sports for much of Asia and Africa; Fanatic Sports for India.Christopher Chase, an attorney based in New York who specializes in sports, intellectual property and media, looked at the “Terms and Conditions” set out by Tokyo organizers regarding ticket use. He said the “force majeure” clause was defined broadly enough to cover the pandemic and health crisis.“Force majeure” spells out unforeseeable circumstances that prevents a contract from being fulfilled.But he noted that local organizers had already committed to paying refunds for the postponement, as have many ATRs.“It’s all a bit confusing as each set of terms seem to direct to the other party’s (terms),” wrote Chase, a partner in the law firm Frankfurt Kurnit. “But it does appear that tickets refunds are possible, regardless of whether a force majeure event occurs.”Tokyo organizers say at least 70% of 7.8 million tickets were set aside for buyers in Japan. About 4.5 million tickets have been sold to Japan residents, with ticket sales expected to be worth at least 0 million to local organizers, their third largest source of income.Hanscom said the uncertainty was pushing down hotel prices in Tokyo. This is accentuated as organizers say they’ll “simplify” the Olympics and cut back on officials, hospitality and media, freeing up blocks of hotel rooms.The Associated Press emailed about a dozen ticket buyers in the United States who purchased from CoSport. Some are keeping their tickets and plan to go. Some returned tickets but still plan to go and buy later. Others canceled plans to go altogether.Andrew Pham, a commodities trader in Spokane, Washington, summed it up. He has invested ,500 in tickets and still plans to go.“I would say at this point, no one should be buying or holding any tickets that they couldn’t afford to lose,” he said.Pham said he assumes that CoSport will be unlikely to return money if the Olympics are canceled.“I couldn’t imagine that they would have the cash liquid to refund people. The terms and conditions are also quite ominous,” he said.Sharon delPilar, a stage manager in Las Vegas, is also going ahead and has spent 0 on tickets.“I’m willing to run the risk — to a certain degree,” she wrote. “Everything else I have purchased (hotel and air) has been made with the option of refunds/cancellation. I trust all efforts will be made to work things out.”Thomas Armbrustmacher, an accountant in Fowler, Michigan, said he has invested almost ,000 in tickets and is also taking a chance.“I am willing to take the risk that I will not get a ticket refund,” he wrote. “I am being cautious on what I buy from here on out though because if cancellation results in no refund, I don’t want to lose too much more money than I have already spent.”Brandon Nagata, a state employee in Honolulu, said he spent about ,400 on tickets and had returned some for a credit card refund, minus the non-refundable service fee. He returned other tickets in exchange for credit for a next-time buy. No service charge was taken out. He still plans to attend.He was critical of CoSport setting the refund deadline on July 31 — a year away from the opening. He said CoSport also did not make the deadline widely known.Lora Cesana, who works as a film and television designer in Des Moines, Iowa, returned about ,000 in tickets. She said she and her husband, who also has an Italian passport, decided this was not the right time for an Olympics.
