NEW YORK (AP) — The credit card companies Visa and Mastercard say they will no longer allow their customers to use the cards to charge for services on the pornographic website Pornhub. The website, which claimed 42 billion visits last year, has been accused of showing videos that depict rape, underage and nonconsensual sex — most prominently in an investigation published last weekend in The New York Times. Mastercard says it has terminated its relationship with Pornhub after its own investigation confirmed violations of standards. Visa says it is still investigating, but suspended use of the card on the site. NEW YORK (AP) — Martha Stewart's first Uber ride was not a good thing.Stewart ordered the "most expensive version" Monday outside Tiffany's flagship store in New York City. As Stewart explained on Instagram , she wanted to be picked up on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.Stewart wrote the first car did not show up and the second parked "halfway down" the street where she "could not see the license plate." That car was pointed in the wrong direction, delaying her journey as the car snaked through midtown Manhattan traffic.But the worst part was the car "was a mess inside and out!!!!!!!!" NEW YORK (AP) — Hall of Famer Lou Brock, the dynamic leadoff hitter and base stealer who helped the St. Louis Cardinals win three pennants and two World Series in the 1960s, has died at 81.Dick Zitzmann, the outfielder's longtime agent and friend, confirmed Brock's death.Brock arrived in St. Louis in June 1964, swapped from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Ernie Broglio in one of baseball’s most lopsided trades.Brock was an anchor for St. Louis as its combination of speed, defense and pitching made a top teams in the ’60s.Brock lost a leg from diabetes in recent years and was diagnosed with cancer in 2017. 617
New numbers just released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on Monday show the number of COVID-19 cases is going up sharply among a group of children.The new numbers show children now account for 9.5 percent of all COVID-19 cases across the United States with 476,439.“Children are not immune. Children can get this disease. Some children can get very sick from this disease,” said Dr. Sally Goza, president of the AAP. “When we first started with this, we were saying children were about 2 percent of all the cases, so they’re now 9.5 percent, so we are seeing a number of children that are cases.”Since May 21 COVID-19 cases in children have increased by more than 700 percent, while the total number of cases has risen 270 percent.In the same time frame, child hospitalizations from COVID-19 have nearly tripled that of the general population, rising 356 percent compared to 122 percent.Deaths have doubled in proportion, as well, as child COVID-19 hospitalizations have risen 229 percent compared to 115 percent for all age groups.“Kids are back playing sports. Some kids are back in school,” said Dr. Goza. “So, it would make sense that children would be increasing as well.”Dr. Goza says as we resume a more normal lifestyle a rise in children is expected, but it is the quick increase in proportions that is concerning. She says it comes down to one thing doctors have been preaching for months now: reducing community spread.“The whole thing of we need to decrease the community spread of this disease,” said Dr. Goza. “That’s what [these numbers] tell me is that we have not done a good job of decreasing community spread, because it’s now spreading to our young children.”Dr. Goza says the new numbers are not worthy of panic, but it is a sobering reminder that even those deemed most resilient to this disease are at-risk and need to heed precautions just as much as everyone else.“This virus is serious. NEW YORK -- Michael Casey is picking up the pieces after some protesters turned violent and destroyed his business, Maxwell’s Bar & Restaurant, in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood“We had to put together a makeshift border so no more looters would come in,” he said.This former New York City firefighter served his community for 13 years. When medical issues forced Casey out of the department, he invested his life savings and built this bar with his friends and family.“My daughter’s first birthday was there,” Casey said. “Her christening was there. It was a real kick to the…it was tough.”Tough, Casey says, both emotionally and financially.Casey says COVID-19 concerns forced him to shut down his business for three months. Without any income, he wasn’t able to pay insurance on his property.“We had to pick and choose what we can pay and what we can’t pay to try to get back up on our feet,” he said. “One of the costs we were not able to incur was our insurance.”After the looting, Casey had to let go of dozens of employees. Now, he’s filing for personal bankruptcy.“We’re done. There’s too much destruction,” he said. “The bills keep piling up. The phone calls keep coming in.”Even after what he calls “senseless destruction,” Casey still believes in the beauty of humanity and New York City.He also added that he has an obligation to his community.“I feel like I’d be letting them down and letting the community down if I decided to walk away now,” Casey said.This former firefighter is now focusing on reopening his Harlem location, saying he needs to be an example of positivity -- especially during destruction.“I never thought twice about running into a burning building; I still wouldn’t think twice about it,” he said. “I would put my life on the line for anybody, even after all this.” 1817
