Echoing sentiments shared before Thanksgiving, the CDC is pleading with Americans to stay home this holiday season to slow the spread of the coronavirus."The best thing for Americans to do in the upcoming holiday season is to stay at home and not travel,'' said Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's COVID-19 incident manager, during a news briefing Wednesday."Cases are rising. Hospitalizations are increasing, Deaths are increasing. We need to try to bend the curve, stop this exponential increase,'' Walke continued. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had similar advice ahead of Thanksgiving, and still the TSA reported some of the highest rates of passengers since the pandemic started in the few days ahead of the holiday. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the TSA screened 1.17 million travelers, a record high since the pandemic started. For those who decide to travel, the CDC now recommends people get tested for COVID-19 both before and after their trips. Their guidance is to test one to three days before travel and again three to five days after travel. They also strongly recommend reducing nonessential activities and quarantining for several days around travel.Health experts, including the White House coronavirus task force is urging those who don’t get tested to act like they could be infectious and quarantine after travel to reduce the potential spread.Walke said the CDC expects to see an increase in the already high level of coronavirus cases in the next few days from Thanksgiving travel. There have been more than 13.7 million positive cases of coronavirus in this country since the pandemic started, more than 180,000 new cases were recorded December 2. More than 271,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. 1738

Don't blame Amazon for the death of Toys "R" Us.It's true, online shopping didn't help matters, but the struggles of Toys "R" Us predate the boom in online shopping. Many of its wounds were self-inflicted.The company's biggest problem: It was saddled with billions of dollars in debt. That debt stopped it from making the necessary investment in stores. And that meant an unpleasant shopping experience that doomed the chain. The company told employees Wednesday that it would close or sell its US stores after 70 years in business."If you're going to have that breadth of inventory, you need someone in the store to help you find it, help you experience it," said Greg Portell, lead partner at retail consultant A.T. Kearney. "It's hard to sell toys in a cold, warehouse environment."Even Toys "R" Us CEO David Brandon conceded in an SEC filing last fall that the company had fallen behind competitors "on various fronts, including with regard to general upkeep and the condition of our stores."Toys "R" Us' debt problems date back to well before Amazon was a major threat. Its debt was downgraded to junk bond status in January of 2005, at a time when Amazon's sales were just 4% of their current level.A year later the company was taken private by KKR, Bain Capital and real estate firm Vornado. The .6 billion purchase left it with .3 billion in debt secured by its assets and it never really recovered. The toy store faced several other big challenges at about the same time. There was the rise of big box retailers like Walmart, which now dwarfs Toys "R" Us in total toy sales. Last year toymakers Mattel and Hasbro each sold about billion worth of their toys at Walmart, more than twice as much as what they sold through Toys "R" Us. Target sold just about as many of their as Toys "R" Us last year. And like most retailers, Toys R Us also lost sales to online rivals such as Amazon that offered lower prices and quick shipping. But much of the chain's resources were devoted to paying off that massive debt load rather than staying competitive. When Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy in September 2017, it disclosed it had about billion in debt and was spending about 0 million a year just to service that debt. That burden crowded out critical strategic priorities, like making its stores a nice place to shop and paying employees.Tell us: How will you remember Toys 'R' Us?Brandon said in a filing last fall that the bankruptcy process would allow it to invest million in its stores. The company hoped to add playrooms where kids could try out toys and spaces for birthday parties, but it never got the chance.Brandon also vowed to spend more money on staff. With extremely low unemployment, competitors like Walmart are raising wages, while Toys 'R' Us was having trouble attracting the kind of help it needed. It said last fall it would spend million from 2018 to 2021 to raise starting wages and to reward and keep its most effective employees."Better employees make for happier customers," Brandon said in the filing.Despite sharply declining sales, Toys "R" Us was also extremely late to the game in closing stores. At the time of its bankruptcy filing, the chain had 1,697 stores -- more than it had ever had.In January, it announced plans to shut 182 US stores. Last month it filed for the equivalent of bankruptcy for its UK operations, where it had 105 locations. On Wednesday, hours before announcing the decision to close its US operations, it said it would close the last 75 UK stores. But the closings in recent weeks were far too little, too late. And as a result, now all of US stores will close, and probably most foreign stores as well.The-CNN-Wire 3698

During the holidays, we often have lots of gifts to send to family and friends and instead of paying a hefty amount to ship them overnight, there’s a new and less costly way to send presents. It’s called Roadie and it’s an app.Once you’ve downloaded the app, you simply start a new gig. Type in where you need your items shipped. It doesn’t matter if it’s the next town over or two states away. You’ll then be set up with a driver headed in that direction. The driver will then pick up and drop off your packages in a matter of hours or few days. The app lets you track your package too. You can ask the delivery driver to take a picture of it along the way. There is no need to worry about package protection. Each gig has a 0 warranty and you even have the option of purchasing an additional ,000 in protection. If you’re wanting to make extra cash by simply delivering the package to the city you’re already headed to, drivers get paid on mileage and urgency. If you’re nervous to try Roadie, just know the new concept of shipping and delivering is backed by UPS. 1081

EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) -- The Mother Goose Parade is an East County tradition dating back to 1947. But because of the pandemic, this year's parade will look a lot different. The sights and sounds will be virtual, thanks to the hard work of long-time El Cajon business owner, Patti Shryock. Besides running Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply, she's also a true historian of the Mother Goose Parade."I've been with Mother Goose since 1985," says Shryock. "I love to see Mother Goose out there, and people come up, especially the kids, and hold her. Then you get the parents talking about their memories of the parade, and being in their child's same position. This has been going on now for 74 years."And just like the parade, her business is also a fixture in El Cajon, opening its doors back in 1963. Shryock and her brother took over full operation in the mid-1980's."My dad passed away in 1985, and my mom in 1990. However, they gave us enough background, and we worked enough in the business, where we were able to continue it on," she said.Shryock says over time a lot of hard work and great employees have created a lot of success. But now they are facing an obstacle as they have never seen before, and that would be the COVID-19 pandemic."I never saw it coming," Shryock says.Uncertain times means they've had to think outside the box"Sanitizer wipes, I started making some myself," she added.Shryock and her team at Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply have persevered to keep the business going. The same can also be said about her effort to keep this year's Mother Goose Parade afloat. "We can't even get a parade down the street, let alone the people with all the distancing," said Shryock. And once again thinking outside the box, Shryock and her group helped find a way to keep this year's parade alive, and that is going virtual."I'm thinking if we did it this way we could get it done, and that's where we called on our wonderful directors to do it a different way," Shryock says. You can see the 74th annual Mother Goose Parade on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. PST on ABC 10News' website and social media pages. 2123
