Anael Sanchez is walking over the rubble of what used to be his home in Phoenix, Oregon."It was crazy," Sanchez said.He lost his home in the wind-driven Almeda fire which tore through four towns in the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon.“It was so thick, the smoke. You could hardly see far away," Sanchez described. Two of the towns, Phoenix and Talent, are home to a large Latinx immigrant population. Sanchez is originally from Mexico but has lived in the area for more than two decades. Since he lost his home, he says many local grocery stores, organizations and the Red Cross have helped him with basic needs.“Clothes, gift cards, a little bit of cash,” Sanchez said. One organization helping is Unete, a nonprofit organization that supports farmworkers and immigrants in southern Oregon and across the nation.“The extra challenge that the immigrant and the farmworker has is the income,” said Dago Berto Morales, director at Unete.According to Morales, the immigrant community in the area was already facing large disparities and an affordable housing crisis. The fire made it worse.“We’re asking the government or local communities to try to find a solution for the housing crisis,” Morales said. With wildfires raging throughout the western U.S., the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing rental assistance, home repair, low-cost loans and other programs for eligible residents. As a legal U.S. citizen, Sanchez could apply. But he says he won’t, knowing many of his friends and neighbors are undocumented.“In this park over there, there might be a bunch of immigrants. They’re not legal, maybe. And if they’re not legal, they’re not going to get help,” Sanchez said.To protect his identity as an undocumented immigrant, another man who lost his home has asked that we not share his name. He was living at what used to be the Phoenix Motel.“Por aquí yo entraba todo los días. Este era el cuarto por aca. Allí están las camas.” (Translation: "I entered through here every day. Over there was our room and those were our beds.”)He’s an agricultural worker in the area.“Si siempre ha trabajado en campos: como en California, Oregon, Washington. Pura pescas como uvas, manzanas, cherries.” (Translation: I’ve always worked in the fields like in California, Oregon, Washington. Crops like grapes, apples, and cherries.")He says he was in shock after seeing the devastation from the Almeda fire.“Como le digo me fui, todo estaba normal. Regreso y veo todo así. Como le digo pues no más al principio no la creí aquí vivía yo. Y casi nunca salgo y ese día a salí.” (Translation: When I left, everything was normal. When I returned, I saw everything like this. At the beginning, I didn’t believe that I lived here. I never go out, but that day I did.”)He lost important documents like his passport and title for the car, but he says he’s thankful he still has his job.“Como dicen se acaban las cosas materiales pero la vida sigue. Y se no le sigue trabajando, pues no hay nada. Porque nada le va a caer haci nomas.” (Translation: Like they say, even when you lose material stuff, life continues. And if you don’t continue working, there’s really nothing else, because nothing’s going to come out of nowhere.”)Both he and Sanchez are remaining strong.“Sitting there and crying is not going to help me at all," Sanchez said. "It’s sad like I said, it’s really sad, but life keeps going.”They say they’re ready to rebuild their lives because they’ve done it before.“I’ve lived a hard life, so I know the pain. I’m used to the pain," Sanchez said.Sanchez says his positive and sometimes sarcastic attitude is what pushes him forward.“That’s where the kitchen used to be. I’m trying to find my favorite cup, coffee cup,” Sanchez said in a sarcastic tone. **********You can donate to Unete's Fire Relief Fund hereIf you are an undocumented immigrant seeking assistance after losing a home to a wildfire, here is some helpful information from FEMA:Do you need to be a U.S. citizen to apply for assistance from FEMA?You must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or Qualified Alien for a cash award from the FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program or from Disaster Unemployment Assistance. You may, however, apply on behalf of another household member, including a minor child, to qualify the household for assistance. What help is there for people who are undocumented?Even if you do not, or your family does not, qualify for FEMA cash assistance (Individuals and Households Program), FEMA can refer you and connect you to other programs that can assist you regardless of your immigration status. We work in partnership with local voluntary agencies such as the Red Cross, and these resources are available regardless of immigration status. Are there any repercussions for undocumented immigrants if they try to file for assistance?FEMA will not proactively provide applicant information to immigration or law enforcement organizations. However, in rare circumstances, based on a specific request, a FEMA applicant’s personal information may be shared within the Department of Homeland Security. 5110

Apple One is now available, including a free trial and pricing information. So, what is it?It’s not a streaming service, it’s a “bundle” of Apple products.Apple One is a subscription plan from Apple that brings together up to six of their services, across all devices, for one price. Depending on the plan, the products could be shared with up to five people. The opportunity to bundle products was announced at an Apple event earlier this year, without a launch date. It is now available in the app store and their website. The three tiers were announced this week. The cheapest level is .95 a month, and includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50GB on iCloud for one person. The family plan includes those four products, for up to five people, at .95 a month. The top tier premier plan is .95 a month, and includes the same four products, plus AppleNews+ and AppleFitness+ (which has not launched yet).Compared to purchasing the individual products, if a person wanted to purchase all of them, the individual plan will save a person a month, the family plan saves a month, and the premier plan saves a month.Subscriptions work across Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Apple TV’s, and Mac computers.Apple is offering a free month-long trial. 1283

As a variant strain of the coronavirus spreads through the United Kingdom, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in an interview on ABC News on Tuesday that it’s possible the variant is in the US."That's certainly possible I mean, when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," said Fauci on ABC News. The variant strain has fueled lockdowns and fears in the UK. It also has prompted much of the world to cut off travel to the UK. Health officials fear that the variant strain spreads more easily. The United States has not cut travel between the two countries. Fauci does not expect that to be necessary.“That's not that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now," Fauci said. The CDC reminded the public that viruses often mutate. The CDC added that it’s investigating why this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating. As travel remains permitted between the two nations, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized officials for not cutting off travel. Cuomo did note that several airlines began testing passengers arriving in New York from the UK for the virus."Right now, this variant in the U.K. is getting on a plane and flying to JFK. Right now today,” Cuomo said. “One-hundred twenty countries require a test. We don't. Other European countries have done a ban. We haven't. And today that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before you learn. Be one of the 120 countries that requires a test before you get on a plane to come to the U.S. This is the mistake we made."The United Kingdom has implemented some of its strongest lockdowns since the onset of the pandemic in recent days. While not much is known about the mutated strain of the virus, it is believed to spread more easily."To our international friends and partners, I want to say very frankly that we understand your concerns and I hope everybody can see that as soon as we were briefed in UK government on the the fast transmissibility of this new strain, that I think 3:15 on Friday afternoon, we lodged all the necessary information with the World Health Organization and we took prompt and decisive action the very next day to curb the spread of the new variant," UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. 2635

Anyone looking to buy an appliance may need to wait a while — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some appliances are currently backordered for several weeks, even up to a few months.Tobie Stanger, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, says that anyone currently in the market for home appliances should be flexible."If you really need a refrigerator, they're out there, but you may not get what you want. So you'll have to be flexible," Stanger said.Consumer Reports has been around since 1936 and works to create a "fair" marketplace for all consumers. Stanger is an appliance expert and says some of the backlogs have to do with the pandemic and global factory shutdowns in the earlier part of the year.Add that to increased use of home appliances and increased demand, and you've got a problem."The companies are trying to ramp it up. They still, in sone cases, cannot find parts," Stanger said. "I have been told by one of our retailers that there are a couple of manufacturers that are not taking new orders until the end of September. So, they're trying, but it's a real grind."The Repair Association supports the aftermarket of "technology products" — anything with a computer chip. Gay Gordon-Byrne, the association's executive director, says the U.S. is overly reliant on China for all electronics."Everything from toys to tractors, refrigerators, cell phones, industrial controls — it is a massive problem if you can't fix that equipment," she said.Gordon-Byrne says that since things are backordered, there's a huge demand for repairs — which creates more problems."About 90% of the stuff on the market today can't be fixed — it either can't be fixed because it's made not to be fixed, or you can't fix it without the (original equipment manufacturer) because they want to make sure they're the only people that can fix it," Gordon-Byrne said. That means consumers are forced to buy new appliances — or, in this case, wait out the backlog.Gordon-Byrne suggests supporting independent, small appliance businesses and repair shops.Consumer Reports has similar advice."We recommend that, in addition to looking at the big box store, that you look at your local independent appliance dealer. They maybe have a reputation for not having as good a price, but we talked to many consumers who were able to get the independent to match the price," Stanger said.Matt Zieminski, a board member at The Repair Association, says not to ignore the refurbished option."There is actually a thriving refurbish effort right now where a repair shop will go around and pick up those units, take the effort to pick them up, clean them make them as good as new again and then resell them," Zieminski said.It may not be convenient, but the pandemic is forcing everyone to get creative and perhaps be patient to get what was once taken for granted. 2835
