SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Kearny Mesa company that trains military and first responders at a local movie and TV studio is pivoting to help solve the county's homelessness crisis.Strategic Operations, located in the backlot of Stu Segall Productions television and movie studio, says it plans to begin building temporary housing for homeless families out of shipping containers.The studio lot is filled with shipping containers that have been converted into commercial, residential, and industrial settings to help military, first responders, and medical professionals train. Kit Lavell, Strategic Operations executive vice president, says that the same approach can be brought to constructing temporary housing, which they're calling "Strategic Habitats," and for less."Strategic Habitats are larger than hotel rooms, which recently have been converted to homeless housing, while our Strategic Habitats are priced 30 to 40 percent less than converted hotels or new construction," Lavell said in a release. "Additionally, Strategic Habitats are much quicker to complete over new construction and the units can easily be assembled in a variety of configurations and placed on parking lots or any open property."The 480-square-foot containers will be furnished with plumbing, air conditioning and heating, a double-burner stove, microwave, and refrigerator. Bedrooms will sleep two adults and two children and the housing units can be placed side-by-side or stacked. Lavell says several city officials have visited to tour the potential tool to address the region's homelessness.Ashley Bailey, senior press secretary and director of digital media with Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, said in a statement that the idea is still in its early stages."The City is open to exploring all solutions that help create more housing stock and address homelessness. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man caught on video peering into a Pacific Beach home has neighbors on edge.The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she was woken up by the sound of police officers knocking on her door in the area of Mission Blvd. and Emerald St. early Tuesday.Officers told her that her neighbor was alerted to an individual in the alley between their residences by his security camera. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was killed after crashing into a parked truck on Interstate 5 in East Village near Petco Park Monday afternoon. The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Imperial Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the 21-year-old victim from Calexico was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his 2015 Nissan sedan into a parked cargo truck. CHP says the victim, who hasn't yet been identified, died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Tuesday night following a chase that injured one woman.According to San Diego Police, officers noticed that the man’s headlights were out and tried to pull him over near Nimitz Boulevard and Rosecrans Street around 8:22 p.m.The man then reportedly took off, striking two cars along the way. The pursuit then led officers onto Interstate 5 where the suspect struck the back of an SUV, injuring a woman inside.Officers were able to take the man into custody after he tried to cross I-5 and run down a steep embankment.The severity of the woman’s injuries are unclear. 612
