China's private enterprises employed 120 million people by September this year, up 9.5 percent from the same month a year ago, said a senior official on Saturday."The private sector of the economy is a main avenue of employment and re-employment in China," said Zhong Youping, deputy minister of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.Zhang made the remarks at a forum on Chinese and Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises held in Guangzhou of South China's Guangdong Province.Developing the private sector would help increase job opportunities and enable economic growth and employment to boost each other, said Zhang.Labor-intensive firms and the service sector could absorb a lot of laid-off workers and college graduates, he added.Last year China's industrial and commercial authorities helped 2.54 million unemployed people find jobs in the private sector and nearly half of the country's new graduates entered private firms.

The US government should withdraw its complaint against China to the WTO over the intellectual property rights (IPR) issue, China's top IPR official reiterated on Tuesday. "The Chinese government has always been firm in protecting intellectual property rights and attained significant achievements in this respect. It's not a sensible move for the US government to file a complaint against China to the WTO," said Tian Lipu, director of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). The United States filed two WTO complaints against China over copyright piracy and restrictions on the sale of US books, music, videos and movies early April. "As far as I know, negotiators from China and the US are still in the consultation stages within the WTO framework," Tian said, speaking at a seminar organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and SIPO in Beijing. He said that it was still hard to predict the result of the consultation since it was the first time China had handled such a complaint. "But we will respond to it positively according to WTO rules and fight through to the end," Tian vowed. According to rules set by WTO, trade negotiators from both countries should try to resolve the dispute within a 60-day consultation period from the day the complaint was lodged. Otherwise, the United States can ask the WTO to establish investigative panels. Tian said it was unreasonable for the United States to ignore the huge progress achieved by China in IPR protection. He stressed that the amount of invention patent applications in China ranked fourth in the world last year and it increased by 28.4 percent on average between 2000 and 2006. "IPR protection is a natural option for building an innovative country. It also serves China's goal for overall development. Therefore, the Chinese government will continue its efforts to protect IPR and combat copyright piracy no matter what decisions the US makes," Tian noted.

KHARTOUM: Chinese peacekeepers were on Wednesday awarded certificates of merit for their excellent performance during their eight-month term in Sudan, a Chinese officer said Thursday.Lieutenant General Jasbir Singh Lidder, commander of the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), presented Unit Citations to the engineering, transportation and medical contingents of Chinese peacekeeping troops, and Force Commander Commendations to 22 Chinese troops.The two certificates of merit are the highest honor awarded to peacekeepers from various contributing countries in Sudan, said the Chinese officer.The awards ceremony was held at the base of the Chinese peacekeeping troops in Wau, capital of West Bahr al-Ghazal state in southern Sudan, two weeks before their departure from Sudan to rotate with another batch of Chinese peacekeeping troops.Lidder said it was a great honor for him to serve with the Chinese peacekeepers as they were ending "their very successful term" in Sudan."During the past months, the three contingents of the Chinese peacekeeping troops have done a significant job to be a role model for professionalism, commitment and conduct," Lidder said.The Chinese peacekeepers had also maintained excellent relations with the contingents of other countries as well as the local population, the UNMIS commander said.Li Chengwen, the Chinese Ambassador to Sudan, congratulated all the three contingents, the 22 Chinese peacekeepers as well as the other officers and soldiers. WUHAN -- The rainstorm and floods have killed 68 people and 25 others were missing in central China's Hubei Province since the flood season began in June, according to local government. Another 402,200 people have been evacuated from affected areas, said Liu Hui, deputy head of the disaster relief office under the provincial civil affairs department at a press conference on Sunday afternoon.
