The National Weather Service confirmed that two EF-0 tornadoes touched down in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon.According to the National Weather Service in Miami, one tornado touched down in downtown Fort Lauderdale near Andrews Avenue and NE 5th Street at about 3:34 p.m. The tornado, packing winds of 65 mph, knocked over construction fencing and barriers. A minor tree damage was reported near NE 1st Avenue and NE 4th Street.  The NWS says the tornado touched down south of the Tarpon River in the Rio Vista neighborhood, causing tree damages and minor debris, including trash cans.  637

The pandemic forced us all to make changes to how we work and learn. It also forced trade schools to find new ways to teach people their crafts.Students who attend Laguna College of Art and Design in California spend a large amount of time in a studio setting, at least they did.When the pandemic hit, faculty had to find a way to create the studio experience virtually.Some of the challenges have been giving students feedback, allowing them to see the work of fellow students and the dialogue that comes with it.“These types of interactions, they're intuitive, they're organic, they flow,” said Hope Railey, chair of fine arts at LCAD. “It’s just part of the day, so now those types of interactions need to be planned.”Railey says 6-hour studio classes take faculty 12 hours or more to put together.She says instructors use pre-recorded lectures and lessons so they can do one-on-one meetings with students.She admits it’s a work in progress, but says students are getting invaluable life lessons through all of it.“They're experiencing some of what life is like after a BFA program,” said Railey. “They're experiencing some of the challenges and kind of facing those challenges and the good thing is, they're getting services and help, like detailed granular help.”Railey says students are helping themselves by asking more questions about how to do things once they finish school, like how to do certain research.She also says doing classes over Zoom allowed the school to bring in artists and speakers they wouldn't normally be able to use. 1553

And then there's the building's size and scope, which rivals some of the neighboring Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, and the top-floor view of the Capitol Dome."Some people think we're coming here to have an influence on Congress. Who doesn't come here to have an influence on Congress," said Steve Green, the chairman of the museum's board.As President of Hobby Lobby, Green has already made an impact in Washington and around the country when the Supreme Court in 2014 sided by a 5-4 vote with his company over the Obama Administration, ruling the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate to be a violation of the family-owned, for-profit business' religious freedom.But Green says any influence the Museum of the Bible may have on members of Congress who come to view the exhibits is only a happy byproduct of the real reason why the museum found its way to its Washington location. According to Green, the museum's leadership selected the city for the capital's foot traffic, not politics, and executive director Tony Zeiss says their settling on a building so close to the Capitol "was simply coincidence." The museum, which opens Friday after seven years of planning, focuses on the history, stories, and impact of the Bible, and includes interactive features like a space re-creating Jesus's first-century village.But the museum doesn't shy away from American politics, either, with exhibits detailing the Bible's importance from 17th century Puritan settlers to the 20th century civil rights movement, and how the Bible was used to justify both pro- and anti-slavery stances that drove America into Civil War."We want people to see how it was used for the good, the bad, and the ugly," says Norm Conrad, the museum's curator for Americana and Biblical Imprints.If there's any lesson on today's politics and culture visitors should take away, the museum's leaders aren't telling. The list of recalled hand sanitizers is growing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has named dozens that contain methanol, which can cause blindness or hospitalizations if absorbed through skin.A consumer watchdog tells us these products are not FDA approved. That's because in March, the agency allowed companies that never made hand sanitizer to make it in order to meet demand. They just had to agree to follow the rules.“So, guess what happened? Some of them didn't follow the rules, either intentionally or unintentionally, and so then, they started getting reports from the poison control centers of people getting sick from methanol in hand sanitizer instead of ethanol,” said Teresa Murray with U.S. PIRG.Murray says many of the recalled products have been made in Mexico. But as part of the temporary guidelines, companies don't have to disclose where the sanitizers were manufactured. So, it's hard for consumers to tell which products might be dangerous.Murray says if you can't tell where the product was made, don't buy it and don't use it if it's already in your home. To be safe, stick with brand names you recognize for now.Murray has found most stores and online retailers have pulled products on the FDA list, but you should still be careful depending on where you shop.“I would caution anyone from buying anything that's on an end-cap clearance aisle, or anything that's from a super discount store,” said Murray. “There may be a reason why one of the mainstream retailers is no longer selling it.”Murray says it's always important to keep hand sanitizers out of reach for kids and pets, but now, even more so.If ingested, methanol can cause even more health problems.Click here to learn more from the FDA. 1738

The Manhattan Beach City Council got an earful from a handful of angry residents who want the owner of a pink house covered with two giant emojis to remove them.They say the bizarre paint job is a public nuisance and worry that it will bring down property values.The homeowners claim the house on 39th Street near Highland Avenue was painted hot pink and decorated with the two eye-popping emojis — one with a zipped lip, the other with googly eyes and its sticking tongue out — after the owner, Kathryn Kidd, was fined ,000. Her neighbors had complained to the city she was illegally running a short-term rental.“She was upset the city shut her down and fined her thousands of dollars,” says neighbor Dina Doll.Both emojis, painted several feet tall, have eyelash extensions.Doll doesn’t think it’s a coincidence.“I think it’s not even ambiguous actually. Zip the lip … we all know what that means,” she said, adding: “I think it violates every sense of common decency.”Kidd, who says she’s simply an art lover, disagrees.“It’s a message to me to be positive and happy and love life,” she insisted, adding: “I have eyelash extensions.
