SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 90 dogs are heading across the country to San Diego to remove them from the path of Hurricane Delta in Louisiana.The dogs will land at Gillespie Field on Thursday as part of the effort to evacuate the animals before the storm hits the northern Gulf Coast, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Once they touch down in San Diego, 60 dogs will be taken to SDHS and the rest will be taken to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Department of Animal Services, and Labradors and Friends. Once the dogs are medically cleared and behaviorally assessed, they will be made available for adoption."We are grateful we can help these animals and alleviate some of the stress on the shelters in Louisiana," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "They are just recovering from Hurricane Laura and now there is an even bigger threat. When we all work together, we can help more animals and that’s what we are here for."The flight is made possible by the nonprofit Wings Of Rescue, which helps fly endangered pets from high intake or high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters.Last month, SDHS, RCHS, and Labrador and Friends took in 130 dogs and cats from Louisiana as well."An animal emergency is an animal emergency, no matter where or when it happens,” said Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo. “Hurricane-ravaged Louisiana called for help — just weeks after the last airlift brought more than a hundred animals to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A University City lab is switching gears to produce COVID-19 tests on a massive scale.Friday, Helix CEO Marc Stapley took Mayor Kevin Faulconer on a tour of the lab, explaining how they used their technology that scans DNA to understand how genes affect your health, to look instead for COVID-19.They changed focus mid-March and launch one of their two new tests next week. The second test will be available in the summer."As we are beginning to reopen our economy, as people are going back to work and doing it safely, one of the things we have to make sure we have enough of is testing," Mayor Faulconer said. He praised the company for finding solutions to a worldwide problem.Helix's lab is mostly automated, making it ideal for rapid and safe production.The test consists of a nasal swab, like cleaning your nostril out with a q-tip, versus the deeper more uncomfortable tests, and a vial filled with a solution.The solution neutralizes the virus so it is safe to handle.In June Stapley said their new "testing service can scale to 10,000 samples a day," so they can supply hospitals, employers and local governments.The second test is said to be more sensitive than the CDC's test.Stapley said, it "could be sent to individuals, but more likely bulk shipping to large distributors or places of work etcetera, and then individuals will take their kit and go do the necessary swab and send it straight to us."The test results come back within 24 hours. 1483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A warning for all homeowners after what looked like a yard sale turned out to be an elaborate theft. Several men staying in a vacation rental near La Jolla pulled up in a moving truck, stealing everything inside. Surveillance cameras caught men moving things through a Birdrock-area garage and into a truck, but the men aren’t movers. They were reportedly staying in the vacation rental, but according to the homeowner had checked in using fake credentials, fake credit cards and fake IDs. "As soon as I found out I went and told all of my employees, and will definitely spread the word that there is a crew going around doing something like this,” said Tyler Trowbridge, a contractor at Trowbridge Custom Floors.Trowbridge is a contractor working in the neighborhood. He’s had tools stolen while working at home and knows how the homeowner is feeling. "You don't wish it upon anybody, it's their personal belongings and their home was invaded. It's a breach of privacy and an invasion in your world."In this case, it wasn’t small belongings either. The owner says the men cleared the place out, taking everything from furniture and TVs to the stove. "When I talked to the actual owner, it was a lot more intense than I thought."What’s more, the owner says meth was left inside. "The fact that there were drugs in the house too, leads me to believe that it might happen again too."La Jolla Vacation Rentals is the property manager. 10News asked them for an interview, but they wouldn’t do it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego pastor is reflecting Wednesday on his special personal connection with Reverend Billy Graham, who passed away at his home in North Carolina from natural causes at the age of 99.Early in his career in 1949, Graham delivered a sermon at the Forest Home Christian Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains.  Bob Botsford's father ran the camp. Nearly two decades later during one of Graham's return visits to the camp - an excited, 5-year-old Bob interrupted his sermon."I remember yelling out 'Hi Billy!' And he yelled back, 'Hi Bobby,'" said Botsford.By then, Graham had become a family friend."I recall bigger-than-life charisma.  He was the most gentle soul and most humble man I've ever met in my life.  He was bold yet caring," said Botsford.Botsford says Graham inspired him to become a pastor at age 24."His invitation was for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that's what I longed for," said Botsford.Later, it was Botsford who flew to a revival in Kentucky to personally invite Graham to return to San Diego. His last revival was in San Diego almost 30 years before. "He said, 'Let's see if we can make that happen," said Botsford.It did.  In May 2003, a record-breaking crowd packed Qualcomm Stadium to hear him speak."It was electric and just filled with hope," said Botsford.After the event, there was a surprise in the mail.  Botsford received a bible from Graham in the mail, which included a message: "Bob Botsford. God Bless You and Keep You.  Amen.  Billy Graham.""Definitely one of my most treasured possessions," said Botsford.A decade and a half later, he must say goodbye to his friend."I'm sad for the world because we lost the greatest communicator of the gospel, but I'm happy for heaven because Billy is finally home," said Botsford.Botsford is also remembering a legacy.  At Qualcomm Stadium that day, his own son met Graham."I saw my son's eyes light up," said Botsford.The meeting inspired his son, who is now a youth pastor at Botsford's church, Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe."Third generation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was hit by a car in Normal Heights says she’s been left stranded for six months after her wheelchair was damaged in the crash. Now, replacing it is a challenge. Pet photographer Tamandra Michaels’ love for the camera came to a pause after she was hit from behind while crossing the street.“It sent me flying," Michaels said. The wreck damaged her custom wheelchair, which cost more than ,000.“It slightly bent the frame to where one of the front wheels don’t quite hit the ground.” Michaels says Geico, the insurance company of the woman who hit her, won’t replace the wheelchair after giving them proof the chair must be replaced.“Months went by, they said they did some research and that the chair should only cost between ,500 to ,100," said Michaels. Michaels says without being able to work, she can’t afford to pay the difference.“It's incredibly frustrating. They’re treating it like its a car or maybe even a bike. This is like my legs; this is my life. I don’t understand why they don’t get that."Michaels says she is now seeking help from an attorney. 10News reached out to Geico’s claim department, but they said they could not release any details about the claim.  1251
