CLEVELAND, Ohio - A local Tuskegee Airman who served in World War II was honored and celebrated in a special way on Thursday.Asa Newman who was part of the Tuskegee Airmen— the first African American unit to fly combat airplanes in World War II—recently turned 102 years old.To celebrate this American hero, community members lined the street as law enforcement honked their horns and a crowd waved across the street to Newman.The Aurora Post of the American Legion was there to honor Newman who was surrounded by family and friends.Newman grew up in Cleveland and attended East Cleveland High School. After World War II, he moved to Chicago and attended college at Roosevelt University. He was one of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. Cleveland police have released surveillance footage of a gangland-style drive-by shooting from February in which small children were nearly gunned down in the crossfire.The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. at a convenience store located in Cleveland, on Feb. 19.According to the footage, there was a gunfight in the parking lot. Two parked SUVs in front of the store were targeted in the drive-by. Camera footage of the shooting shows three cars pull into the parking lot and the occupants inside open fire on the two vehicles. A man and two children who just exited the store were mere feet from where the bullets ricocheted off the building's walls. 681

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents who felt the need for speed found themselves stuck in traffic Monday as a prop fighter jet from the Top Gun sequel was moved on city streets. The F-14 fighter was hauled through traffic to the Coronado Bridge on its way to East San Diego County about 9 p.m. A witness stuck in the backup told 10News it was a tight squeeze on the small streets. “They had to do a little backing up, and back and forth for a few minutes,” Emily Foster said. “It finally pulled through and missed a parked car by inches.” The jet, which belongs to the San Diego Air and Space Museum Gillespie Field Annex, was used for the filming of Top Gun 2 at Naval Air Station North Island over the winter. During filming, the F-14 never took flight. “You’ll see it move in the movie, but that’s movie stuff,” said Annex manager Jeff Eads. Crews disassembled the jet for its trip from Coronado to East County. “Take wings off of it, the elevators, the horizontal stabilizers,” said Eads, who had the job of putting it back together.Photos posted on the SDASM Annex Facebook page showed the fighter jet being returned to Gillespie Field with the unique Top Gun markings on its side.Air and Space Museum officials were not able to disclose details about the terms of the plane's involvement in the movie. 1324

Comedian and actor Chuck McCann has died of congestive heart failure at age 83.He died Sunday, April 8, his family said.McCann was known for voice work in "DuckTales" films, "The Garfield Show" and as the voice of Sonny the Cuckoo Bird in commercials for Cocoa Puffs cereal, to name a few of his many credits.His first major film was "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" in 1968.  He had several guest appearances on television shows in the years that followed, including "Bonanza" and "Little House on the Prairie."McCann and his wife, Elizabeth Fanning, have two daughters. 587

CLEVELAND — Two residents in Cleveland's West 58th Street neighborhood suffered significant injuries while protecting neighborhood children from an Oct. 7 pit bull attack.Becky Barker and Jay Anderson responded after hearing the screams of children who were being chased by three pit bulls they said were part of a one-hour rampage in their neighborhood.Barker told WEWS the pit bulls had children trapped on top of a car that was parked in front of her home, and when she stepped out to help, the pit bulls bit her multiple times in three areas of her body."They could have killed me, they really could have, if they would kept ripping me open like they did," Barker said."The children were screaming, and the dogs are just like clawing up this ladies car to get at these kids," she said.Jay Anderson also suffered several dog bites on the backs of his legs and back.Anderson said he tried to use a screwdriver to fend-off the attacking dogs, but one of the dogs was able to disarm him."Just terrible, it was a horrible thing, kind of scary," Anderson said."So I turned around and looked at the dog that took my screwdriver, and a second one started attacking me" he said.Cleveland EMS, the fire department and the Cleveland dog warden responded to the scene.Residents told WEWS the owner of the dogs was cited and one of the pit bulls was confiscated.According to city law, the owner could be fined up to ,000, but Barker believes the irresponsible owner should face even tougher penalties."It isn't the breed of the animal, it's the owners of these animals that have them," Barker said."The owner of these dogs they should be held accountable, and really pay for what they did," she said.WEWS contacted the City of Cleveland about the case, but it said it couldn't comment on an ongoing investigation. 1854
