BALTIMORE, Md. — A mom walks into a bar. There is no punch line. Just a punch in the gut. A mom sold her baby, Marion Louise Smith, for cash and her older daughter for a car 51 years ago at a bar that use to be called Ken Tins. It sat right on the corner of Chester and Fairmount in Butchers Hill in Baltimore.Kenneth Suggs was asked if he wanted the baby for cash. Shocked and concerned for the child, Suggs used his whole paycheck to take Smith.Suggs, an electrician, and his IHOP waitress wife Gail took in Smith and raised her. Smith now lives with her family in Middle River, Maryland. But when her father died, his wish for Smith was to find her sister. And that's what she's doing. 761
Belgian authorities are investigating the killing of three people in the eastern city of Liege on Tuesday as a terror attack, the country's prosecutor said. The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET) when an assailant stabbed two policemen from behind before stealing their service weapons and using them on the officers, Liege Prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said at a news conference on Tuesday. After killing the two police officers, the attacker continued walking through the street and opened fire on a parked vehicle, fatally wounding the driver inside, Dulieu added.According to the prosecutor, the suspect then took refuge in a local high school where he held a woman hostage. When police intervened, the man opened fire, injuring several other officers, before he was shot dead.It is not yet clear what the attacker's motive may have been, a spokesperson from the Liege prosecutor's office told CNN earlier. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he and the government send their thoughts to the victims and their families. The Belgian Royal Palace also tweeted its sympathies following the shooting. "Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. Courage to their loved ones," the tweet read.According to CNN affiliate VTM, Michel and King Philippe of Belgium are on their way to Liege.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said on Twitter that the country's crisis center had been monitoring the situation. The crisis center said that the students in the school were safe and that none had been injured.Liege resident Didier Deflem filmed a video allegedly showing special intervention police units shooting at the Liege attacker in front of the Waha high school.Deflem told CNN: "Police made us enter the building to protect us. The PAB (Peloton anti-banditisme, a special intervention unit of the city of Liege) intervened. The man wanted to run out and he was shot down. That's all I saw. We're still in shock."Pierre Etienne Dit Pave, who teaches French language classes nearby, told CNN he was first alerted to the attack by a "commotion in the street" and went out to investigate."At one point a policeman told me to go inside. I went back to the classroom and locked the door for a while," he said. "We heard a lot of shots. We didn't see anything because we were locked in the room. We were waiting for police to give us the clearing."Liege is Belgium's third-largest city, after Brussels and Antwerp, according to the national tourist office. For centuries, it has been an important cultural and industrial center for the country. In 2011, Liege was the scene of a grenade and gun attack that left at least 5 dead and injured more than 100.The-CNN-Wire 2699
Banking since COVID-19 has taken on a different form. From wearing a mask to not being able to talk with a teller, several changes have been implemented in recent months. At Michigan Legacy Credit Union, a cashless transaction requiring the help of a teller can now be handled from home, from the mall, or by the lake. They launched the virtual teller app in early July."As long as you don't need a cash transaction, you can open up a membership, you can apply for a loan or a mortgage," Teller Michael Castano said. "There's so many different member service opportunities you can have just from the comfort of your home.""Only 7 percent of our transactions are done by members in our lobby with a teller. Everything else is electronic format," CEO Carma Peters added.Peters said declining transactions in brick-and-mortar branches has fueled the credit unions to push to mobile banking, and since COVID-19, there's been a massive increase in mobile banking."We let members call us, text us, chat us, use our mobile website. Our mobile logins went up in the month of April by 50,000," Peters said. She said the plan was to equip branches with virtual tellers before launching the app. That comes next.Banking in-person has also taken on a different look. Wearing a mask during a visit prior to COVID-19 might raise suspicion. Now, it's encouraged at all credit unions. For banks that remain open, the American Banking Association has also called on all banks to adopt a face mask policy. This story was first reported by WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. 1551
Britain's Princess Eugenie has married Jack Brooksbank in Windsor's second royal wedding of the year. The ceremony took place in St. George's Chapel, which also hosted the wedding of Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in May.Pixie Geldof, British model, singer and third daughter of Irish singer-songwriter Bob Geldof and the late television presenter Paula Yates, was among the early arrivals at the chapel on a windy but sunny fall morning.A wide variety of colors were on display, from autumnal maroons to pastel shades. Several women struggled to hold on to their hats as a strong wind whipped across the grounds of Windsor Castle.Model and actress Cara Delevingne arrived at the castle in a suit and top hat, while actress Demi Moore selected a dark red dress by Stella McCartney. Moore was accompanied by American florist and perfumer Eric Buterbaugh, with whom she has been friends for many years.American actress Liv Tyler, who arrived with Dave Gardner, chose a midnight tailored suit with midnight velvet pumps and a black velvet box clutch by Stella McCartney, a headdress by Stephen Jones and jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels.Naomi Campbell was seen wearing a metallic black ombré cocktail dress and cropped cape, featuring hand-woven silk tulle tweed by Ralph & Russo.Robbie Williams, British singer and former member of pop group Take That, was spotted arriving at Windsor with his wife and fellow X-Factor judge Ayda Field. They have been friends of Eugenie and her sister Beatrice for years and their daughter Theodora is a bridesmaid at the ceremony.British artist Tracy Emin, comedian and writer Stephen Fry, and singer Ellie Goulding also took their places in the chapel in the run-up to the ceremony, as did many members of the royal family, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The former Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, wore a long-sleeved red gown by Alexander McQueen.Brooksbank works as a brand ambassador for Casamigos tequila, which was co-founded by actor George Clooney, property developer Mike Meldman and Rande Gerber, the entrepreneur husband of supermodel Cindy Crawford.Eugenie, 28, is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth II's third child, and Sarah, Duchess of York. She is ninth in line to the throne and works as the director of the Hauser & Wirth art gallery in London. While she has not attracted anything like the global attention bestowed upon her cousin Harry and his American bride, Eugenie's wedding is not a small, or cheap, affair.More than 800 guests gathered in the Gothic chapel for the ceremony at 11 a.m. (6 a.m. ET), 200 more than were invited to watch the Duke and Duchess marry. The Queen, Prince Philip and most of the royals were in attendance, with Eugenie's sister Beatrice taking on the role of maid of honor. Thomas Brooksbank, the groom's younger brother, was the best man.The one notable absence was the Duchess of Cornwall, the wife of Prince Charles, who is attending a longstanding engagement at a Scottish school.Prince George and Princess Charlotte -- the two oldest children of William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge -- both have official roles at the wedding. George, 5, who is third in line to the throne, is a page boy and his 3-year-old sister is one of six bridesmaids. The Princess first met her fiancé on a ski trip near Verbier in the Swiss Alps. Brooksbank proposed during a vacation in Nicaragua last winter. The wedding service featured a personal prayer by Archbishop of York John Sentamu, while David Conner, the Dean of Windsor, gave the address and is officiating.Opera singer Andrea Bocelli and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the wedding, and a fanfare was played by trumpeters from the band of the Household Cavalry. As the couple depart the chapel, the steps will be lined with members of the Grenadier Guards. Prince Andrew, is a colonel with the guards. The newlyweds will leave in a carriage procession through Windsor, though the route will be far shorter than the one taken by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The cost of security will be borne by the taxpayer, which has raised concerns among republicans who note that the Princess does not carry out official royal duties on behalf of the Queen. The Queen will host an afternoon reception in St. George's Hall, with more celebrations planned for the evening at Royal Lodge, the York family home in Windsor Great Park.The-CNN-Wire 4521
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana state trooper has died following a single-vehicle crash hours after learning he would be fired for his role in the in-custody death of a Black man last year. Authorities say Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth was mortally wounded in a highway crash early Monday. He had been placed on paid leave this month amid fallout from the May 2019 death of Ronald Greene, which has become the subject of a federal civil rights investigation and a wrongful-death lawsuit alleging he was brutalized by troopers following a high-speed chase. Police have refused to release video or records of the arrest. 635
