It was a scary situation. A motorist flagged down deputy Jeremie Nix on Wednesday, saying their 3-month-old child was not breathing. If not for Nix being at the right place at the right time, the baby named Kingston might not have survived. According to the Marion County, Florida Sheriff's Office, Nix performed "life-saving measures" on the child, such as chest compressions. After Kingston remained unresponsive, Nix took the child to a nearby hospital. Within minutes, doctors were able to treat Kingston. Doctors told the sheriff's department that Nix's swift actions saved the child's life. By Thursday, Kingston was out of the hospital and back home with his mother.  717

INDIANAPOLIS — Parents of two girls who attend Horizon Christian School on Indianapolis’ northeast side say their daughters are being bullied and threatened because of the color of their skin.Alexander Wortham realized something was happening when his daughter, Imani, started acting strange, asking to stay home from school more often than a typical teen girl.He and Dominique Duncan soon found out that their two high school daughters were being bullied.“Silence is killing our young people," Wortham said. "People not dealing with the issue. Not dealing with the problem and I think for us, as parents, enough is enough."Duncan agreed.“Very let down as a parent. Very let down,” Duncan said.Imani and her friend, LaShanti, say a male student started bullying them at school saying things like “If the school ever gets shot up, you’ll be the first one to get shot.”“He pointed to me personally, he looked me in the eye,” Imani said.“He said he would sell me into slavery if I didn’t do what he said and then he started making little jingles about slavery,” LaShanti said.According to an email the parents received from a school administrator, the school suspended the student last week after the girls’ parents brought the issue to the administration’s attention. But that student was allowed to return to class on Monday.The girls felt so uncomfortable, they both decided to stay home this week.“We should be able to go to school and not feel threatened, scared or having to be on edge the whole time,” Imani said.Both parents say they want the school to create more concrete policy changes on bullying. They both suggested an all-school assembly or bringing experts in to discuss race relations and bullying.The Horizon Christian School principal denied to comment on the situation, saying it’s against school policy to discuss students without permission from all parents involved.  1900

It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season.Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed.The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record.Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. If you lived under a rock, or are too young to remember, the lyric read: “We goin’ ridin’ on the freeway of love, winds against our back. We goin’ ridin’ on the freeway of love, in my pink Cadillac.”“That has been an anthem for those of us that drive a pink Cadillac,” Ellis said. “Driving a pink Cadillac in our world says success. It was associated with every single family gathering that I remember throughout my childhood.”Harris Earl has been driving a pink Cadillac for more than 20 years — she said the music of Aretha Franklin was always part of her life, now the music brings back floods of happy memories. She said she’s always known that Franklin had an impact on her community, but since her passing she’s been able to learn even more about how she worked along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and supported the Civil Rights movement.”That makes a big difference for all people,” Earl Harris said. “For all women.
