ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- As firefighters work towards 100% containment in the Valley Fire, business owners are cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames. Alpine Dog Ranch is a vacation ranch for dogs to say while their owners are away. When the Valley Fire started, the ranch's owner, Thomas MacKinnon, was taking care of nine dogs, including his own. He quickly rushed to get them all into a van and tried to get out, but MacKinnon says they were trapped by flames. He and several neighbors took refuge in an open field until the flames passed. Firefighters and a 747 Supertanker saved all of the structures. No one was hurt. The fire did burn a lot of the greenery on the ranch and now MacKinnon is cleaning up; repairing fencing, the sprinkler system and covering burned patches with woodchips. MacKinnon says the fire was an added challenge on top of a difficult year. Like many businesses, the Alpine Dog Ranch has been struggling. (KGTV) -- A semi-truck hauling frozen chicken veered off Interstate 8 and overturned, scattering boxes of the poultry product onto the ground.The crash happened at around 5 a.m. Thursday off westbound Interstate near East Victoria Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.The cause of the crash is unclear, but witnesses and the CHP said the truck flipped onto its side and came dangerously close to a fence of a nearby home.Some witnesses said they saw the truck’s driver staggering in the lanes just after the wreck. (KGTV) -- A local animal sanctuary is mourning the loss of Shadow the leopard.Shadow first came to Lions Tigers & Bears in Alpine four years ago after being rescued from a defunct animal sanctuary in South Dakota.Unfortunately, Shadow was plagued with health issues, including skin disease and leaky heart valves.The leopard’s health continued to deteriorate this year, and Lions Tigers & Bears officials decided to put Shadow down this weekend.Shadow is the second big cat the Alpine sanctuary has lost in two weeks; on Oct. 26, a tiger killed another when they were accidentally brought into close contact with one another. 656

Akash Vukoti, speller 459, from Texas, was the youngest speller in the competition the first time he came to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, at six years old.Akash turns nine Tuesday, on the first day of competition. He's still among the youngest competitors, but the third grader is now a seasoned pro."It feels amazing to be back," he said, "Being in the National Spelling Bee itself is such an honor."Akash said he thinks the competition will be tougher this year -- after all, there are more competitors -- but that the actual spelling is his favorite part of being there.
