TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday. YICHUN, Heilongjiang, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The government of Yichun, a city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, has corrected Tuesday night's plane crash death toll to 42, saying one dead body that was torn apart in the disaster was formerly counted as two.A local publicity official said earlier on that 43 dead bodies were retrieved.According to the death roll released by the city government, the dead were aged roughly from 12 to 55, calculated from their birth dates indicated in their ID numbers. Among them, however, was a Chinese holding a passport and three crew members whose ID numbers were not available.Rescuers wrapped up the bodies early on Wednesday and have transported them to the city's funeral homes for families to identify them.The ERJ-190 jet, manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer with maximum passenger capacity of 108, crashed near the runaway of Lindu airport of Yichun at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, some 40 minutes after it took off from the provincial capital Harbin.Ninety-one passengers, including five children, and five crew members boarded the plane, sources with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said.Officials in Yichun confirmed a group of officials from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security were also on board, including a vice minister and six division chiefs. BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang Friday urged increased supervision of police investigations and the reform of the penal system.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while attending a plenary meeting of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee in Beijing.Representatives of the Supreme People's Procuratorate reported to the meeting on their work to strengthen supervision on the use of investigative measures such as search, detention and freezing the suspect's asset by law-enforcement officers.Officials from the Supreme People's Court (SPC) also reported the progress made in a pilot program which intends to help courts at local levels to be more transparent and fair while meting out penalties.Zhou said these were vital to the building of a just and clean law-enforcement system and must be carefully implemented."Investigative and procuratorate authorities must attach equal importance to punishing crimes and safeguarding human rights, and to procedural justice and substantive justice, and must strictly abide by the law in enforcing investigative measures such as search, detention and seizing the suspect's asset," he said.He said the SPC's pilot program in roughly 120 local courts had promoted the fairness and transparency in handing out penalties, which had significantly reduced the rates of appeal, lodging a protest against a ruling and petition in criminal cases.Law enforcement agencies must push ahead the pilot program as one of their priorities, while in the meantime working to fully engage the public in the supervision of the handling of criminal cases, he said.Zhou, who also heads the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, called for more transparent law enforcement to ensure the public's right to know and supervise.He also said places for interrogation, custody, trial and detention must be under 24-hour audio and video recording.
