SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests.The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff. They added that, throughout the protests and riots, no one had time off, and that all vacation time was canceled during the unrest.The news comes after rioters set fire to several buildings and vehicles in La Mesa in late May.Several stores were also looted, including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores and shopping centers. 737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday night, the State Board of Education voted to decline the renewal charters for all four Thrive Charter Schools in San Diego. They explain the test scores are too low and keep dropping. The vote technically didn't carry because the board needs six votes to pass any motion. The vote Thursday night was four to two, not all members were present for the vote. If the schools are forced to shut down, nearly 1,000 students would have to look for new schools at the end of the school year. She tells me this is her daughter's first year, "it's been a Godsend because I was so done with not being able to have LeLe brought up to her potential in the public schools". This school year, Buehler moved her daughter to Thrive and says she doesn't think the state board should shut the schools down solely based on that, "it's mind-blowing because this is going to change so many students lives, not the better, and it’s a shame that it's based on numbers on a paper when you actually see these are future leaders in our community."Meanwhile, some parents have already contacted the San Diego Unified School District to enroll their children for next year. The District Operations Support Officer, Marceline Marques, tells 10News, "in the past 24 hours, we've already placed 60 students throughout the district from Thrive". SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Secretary of the Interior stated in no uncertain terms in a letter sent to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Thursday federal law supersedes state law. This was in reference to an ordinance the San Diego County Board of Supervisors passed in November banning recreational shooting, saying it was unconstitutional.Currently the law states you can shoot at targets on BLM land, "as long as it is done in a safe manner, without damaging natural resources or improvements on public lands." There is a section that states you may not fire any plastic pellets, exploding, tracer or steel core rounds. This is to prevent wildfires.RELATED: San Diego County Board of Supervisors approves recreational shooting ban near DulzuraCounty Supervisor Diane Jacob said the goal of the ordinance was also to prevent wildfires, coming after the Gate Fire in May of 2017, sparked near an area known for target practice."She immediately blamed the fire on the shooting and she had no evidence," Executive Director of San Diego Gun Owners PAC Michael Schwartz said. He also said the board never spoke to the federal government."When he [the Secretary of the Interior] found out the entire department said no this isn’t something we’re going to stand by at all," Schwartz said. The Secretary of the Interior sent a statement to the Board of Supervisors Thursday citing the Supremacy clause in the Constitution and, "law enforcement personnel have no authority to enforce unconstitutional pronouncements of law."RELATED: After Gate Fire, recreational shooting ban hits public landsJacob fired back with this statement: "The BLM decision is unfortunate and frustrating because this area is highly prone to wildfire, and we've already learned the hard way that shooting at this spot poses a significant risk to life and property. I appreciate the BLM's offer to discuss this issue further because it's critical that we do all we can to put public safety first."Schwartz, glad to see the powerful statement, said, "it’s not ambiguous it’s very clear, no this isn’t going to happen, its out of your jurisdiction."Schwartz says the regulation has been put on hold after that letter reached the board. "The gun owners consider this a huge win, it shows what activism can do and when people band together and get involved we can stop unconstitutional regulations by elected officials abusing their power," he said, adding he hopes to see the ordinance removed from the books. 2485
