(KGTV) - A Jamul couple made a heartbreaking return to what remains left of their home, destroyed by the Valley Fire.Late Saturday afternoon, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video from the back yard of their home on West Boundary Truck Trail."The smoke blowing straight above our our house, so I knew we were in big trouble," said Irving Beeman.The fire seemed a good four to five miles away, but that changed quickly."In about 15 seconds, it went over a quarter mile ... The flames were between 100 and 200 feet tall," said Irving.Irving scrambled to a ridge and peered over."Looked like waterfall of fire from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley. A wind vortex or something took it straight down to valley floor," said Irving.Anita left first, while Irving left in another vehicle soon after. The couple only had time to load up what amounted to a truck bed of belongings. A photo taken by Irving shows his property, as it began burning."We watched it catch fire and then tore out of there," said Irving.The next day, the couple got back to their property, and their fears were realized. Their home of 20 years was no more. One of their trucks and their son's van were destroyed."Just devastating. Still had been holding out hope," said Anita.Buried under the remains of their home, were boxes containing the ashes of Anita's parents. In the rush, it didn't get packed."In the middle of night, you think of things that are gone, things you couldn’t save," said Anita."I would wake up and saw her crying. Just hugged her. Not much you can say. Just hug each other," said Irving.They'll continue to lean on each other, as they begin their long road to recovery."It'll be real tough to rebuild, but we’re going to," said Anita."We’re very grateful we’re alive and have a chance to rebuild," said Irving.The couple's home was insured. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help them rebuild their home. 1943

Kamala Harris questioned Judge Amy Coney Barrett for 30 minutes during Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Tuesday.Harris, Joe Biden’s running mate and Democratic candidate for vice president, largely used her allotted time to point toward President Donald Trump’s campaign goal of eliminating the Affordable Care Act.Democrats, like Harris, have zeroed in on their belief that Barrett would vote to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which was passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by President Barack Obama nearly a decade ago.Just one week after the election, the Supreme Court will hear another GOP-led challenge to the law. In 2012, the Affordable Care Act was “saved” in a 5-4 ruling by the Supreme Court as justices said that the law should stand as it levied a tax penalty for those without health care. In 2017, the individual mandate was struck down, meaning there is no longer a tax penalty component to Obamacare. Now the argument comes back to the Supreme Court, as Republicans claim the court's previous ruling is moot given there is no longer a tax penalty.Harris pointed to a previous op-ed pinned by Barrett when she was a law professor at Notre Dame to claim Barrett would rule against Obamacare. Barrett wrote that the Affordable Care Act should have been overturned in 2012."You've already opined the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. And that position satisfied the president's promise to only nominate judges who would tear down the Affordable Care Act,” Harris said.Barrett fired back, and added that she has made no commitment to the Trump administration on overturning the act.“Question would be figuring out whether Congress, assuming that the mandate is unconstitutional now, whether that consistent with your intent,” Barrett said.Harris then pressed Barrett on her views on Roe vs. Wade. Barrett said multiple times throughout the hearing that she would not offer an opinion on the 1970s-era ruling that largely has kept abortion legal throughout the US.“I would suggest that we not pretend that we don't know how this nominee views a woman's right to choose,” Harris said.Harris was questioned by Mike Pence at last week’s vice presidential debate on whether her and Biden would be supportive of expanding the Supreme Court. James Comey is embarking on a publicity tour.The former FBI director is planning a series of media appearances to promote his book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership," starting with an ABC News interview airing Sunday evening at 10 p.m., ET. It's the first sit-down, televised interview Comey has given since he was fired by President Donald Trump last year and the first in a series of interviews he will sit for in the coming weeks. CNN's Jake Tapper is set to interview Comey on April 19. CNN's Anderson Cooper will host a town hall with Comey on April 25."A Higher Loyalty" won't be formally released until next week, but explosive details have already spilled out into the media. Major media outlets, including CNN, obtained copies of the book this week and quickly published reports on its scathing and unsparingly critical depictions of the President. According to those reports, Comey writes that Trump is "unethical and untethered to the truth" and compares his presidency to a "forest fire."Trump and his allies have already launched a counterattack. The President called Comey "a LEAKER & LIAR" in a pair of tweets Friday morning, describing the former FBI director as an "untruthful slime ball" and saying that Comey should be prosecuted for leaking classified information. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders joined in the criticism by tweeting a link to a video from the Republican National Committee accusing Comey of lacking credibility.Comey has indeed faced criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike -- and the release of his book gives him a high-profile platform to defend himself. Comey announced in July 2016 that he would not recommend charges against Clinton, but stated publicly that Clinton and her aides had been "extremely careless" in handling classified information.
