The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. I'm very frustrated and angry that I can't take my grandson to go visit SeaWorld, when it's open to the public who wants to pay for a special ticketed event, and not to us who have been paying all this time as passholders," said Becker.She's not alone. In the past few days, ABC 10News has received emails and Facebook messages from passholders upset about having to pay for the extra cost."We're being treated like second class citizens in essence," said Becker.SeaWorld plans to hold the weekend events until late September, and then reassess a true opening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia.While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s new gig economy law was meant to help rideshare drivers and other freelance workers get better benefits, but some critics say it’s threatening the spirit of Christmas itself.Those critics are mall Santas, who have traditionally been hired as independent contractors through third-party bookers or employment agencies.Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), those workers must be reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.“Lorena Gonzalez, she might kill all the Santas. She might kill the Easter Bunnies,” said Steve Schafer, the president of the San Diego chapter of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas.Some Santas warn that bookers may go to great lengths to avoid paying employee benefits. “I don't know how someone can justify this,” said Jerry Tamburino, a Santa who has worked for more than a decade at a large commercial store.Tamburino said his agent notified him Tuesday that she would replace him and other Santas at a chain of California retail stores with out-of-state St. Nicks.“That's what [the booker is] being forced to do to address -- or evade -- or stay in business with this stupid law,” he said.Bringing in out-of-state workers to skirt AB-5 would violate California law, since labor laws apply to anyone performing work in the state, said Gonzalez’ office. But Tamburino said it would be hard for regulators to enforce.Malls and stores could hire Santas directly as independent contractors, Gonzalez’ office noted, since that kind of relationship passes AB-5’s three-pronged test.To do so, Tamburino said he would have to form his own LLC and said he doesn’t have the experience to run his own business.Tamburino said he would begin reaching out to other Santa-booking agencies in hopes they will hire him as an employee, but there’s a lot at stake: he receives about half of his annual income from Santa jobs. 1938

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least one San Diego woman is a part of thousands who've volunteered to participate in a human challenge trial to find a vaccine for COVID-19. April Simpkins is a healthy 29-year-old. Simpkins said she felt helpless watching as the pandemic spread around the world, until she heard about 1 Day Sooner while listening to a podcast. 1 Day Sooner is an organization that advocates for volunteers willing to participate in a human challenge trial. The trial means being infected with COVID-19 in hopes of speeding up the process for a vaccine. The trial is restricted to young and healthy people. So far, there is no plan for any human challenge trials to fight COVID-19, but over 30,000 thousand people, from over 140 countries, have signed up to volunteer. The hope is to have the list of volunteers ready, if and when such a trial is approved.
