The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted businesses and industries around the country as unemployment rates are at historic highs and many are wondering how and when our economy will recover."One of the biggest impacts is going to be on workers' wages. They’re not going to recover for years. So we’re going to see zero wage increases probably for several years moving forward more than the Great Recession (of 2008 and 2009) because this hit was more than the Great Recession," says Jack Strauss, the Chair of Applied Economics at the University of Denver.Strauss predicts wages will likely stay stagnant in almost all industries. In some cases, some people will see their wages go down."This is the first time many are being cut. University of Arizona, University of Denver, where I’m from, and other universities, we have had wage cuts of 5-10%. Didn’t happen in 2008; we were frozen. But this is the first time 5-10%" says Strauss.In California, the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board works to help businesses find qualified workers and the unemployed find their next job. Executive Director Blake Konczal says he doesn't expect people to start to really look for another job until unemployment benefits run dry. But once they do, there will be a mad dash for any available jobs."When you’re looking for work, when unemployment is that rampant, the question regrettably isn’t, ‘Why aren’t I getting a higher wage?’ People want a wage," says Konczal.The good news, though, is that economists don't expect the cost of living to increase much.“Because wages have been low, demand has been low, so the cost of living has only gone up gradually," says Strauss.But with high unemployment and few wage increases, people will likely be spending less."That negative effect will be moving forward in a lot of industries relying on discretionary items because you're still going to buy food, because that’s a necessity, but you’re not going to go on a vacation, you’re not going to buy a new car," says Strauss.Konczal is worried about how this economic downturn will affect small businesses…“And the people who worked for them,” Konczal said. “In nine out of 10 times those types of businesses are the strength of our economy, sets us apart. The FDA said in a news conference on Friday that there have been “roughly" five adverse reactions to Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, which began distribution earlier this week.According to FDA and Pfizer officials, 2.9 million doses of the vaccine was distributed this week. Those doses mostly went to health care workers and those living and working in assisted living facilities. It’s unclear exactly how many of those 2.9 million doses have been administered, as of Friday.Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, told reporters on Friday that one of the five adverse events caused a serious reaction. Marks did not go into detail on the locations or conditions of all the cases. The FDA has not responded for a request for additional information.Marks said that a case in Alaska was the most serious of the reactions being investigated.“We will continue to watch these closely. It is difficult to talk about them without any kind of good certainty until we have more information on them,” Marks said.FDA officials said that it’s possible the reactions were from the vaccine’s active ingredient polyethylene glycol. According to government information, the ingredient can cause known side effects such as bloating, diarrhea, nausea, cramps, gas and hives.FDA administrator Dr. Stephen Hahn said that the vaccine’s monitoring program is working well.“One of the things the FDA does well and uniquely is really getting to the bottom to events like allergic reactions,” Hahn said.On Friday, a second vaccine received FDA authorization. The death of a 22-year-old African-American man shortly after a struggle with police last week has been ruled a homicide, authorities in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana said Monday.Keeven Robinson, of Metairie, died last Thursday, following a police chase and an altercation with narcotics detectives from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, located outside of New Orleans, according to authorities.An initial autopsy found significant traumatic injuries to the soft tissue of Robinson's neck, said Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich, who cautioned that the results from the autopsy, which was conducted Saturday, are preliminary and more tests need to be conducted.Cvitanovich said the findings are consistent with compressional asphyxia, which will likely be cause of death at the end of the process.The four detectives involved in the incident are white, said Sheriff Joseph P. Lopinto, who declined to release their names at this point."I understand ... this investigation will be under a microscope, understand it fully," Lopinto told reporters.Gaylor Spiller, president of the West Jefferson Parish NAACP branch, said Robinson's family is also seeking a second independent autopsy."I like the fact that Sheriff Lopinto stepped up to plate, and he's doing his part," Spiller said, according CNN affiliate WDSU. "He knows that the NAACP will be on his trail."Robinson was being investigated by narcotics detectives early Thursday, Lt. Once handcuffed, detectives noticed Robinson was not breathing, Rivarde said. Detectives administered life saving techniques before Robinson was taken to a local hospital where he died, Rivarde said.The agency is not equipped with body cameras or dash cameras, according to Rivarde."They were in a struggle," Lopinto said. "They used force." He added that the officers admitted to using force during the arrest.But the sheriff said he's "not coming to the conclusion that this was a chokehold."Lopinto said he contacted the Louisiana State Police on Saturday after he was told of the initial findings, and asked them to assist in the investigation.The sheriff said he has "every faith" in his officers to do their job well."I know they have the expertise because this is what they do every day, but I also understand that an independent set of eyes is something that's appropriate in a case like this," he said.The four detectives involved in the arrest were read their rights and have given statements, Lopinto said.They are being reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the sheriff's said.The FBI's Civil Rights Task force is also looking into the matter after he contacted them Saturday, the sheriff said.The actions of the coroner's office were largely praised Monday by Robinson's family.Hester Hilliard, an attorney for Robinson's family, thanked the coroner's office "for their professionalism and their transparency.""Today is just as hard as Thursday for this family.
