A new study from Canada's Ottawa Hospital Research Institute found that marijuana use during pregnancy makes it 1.5 times more likely the child will develop autism. The findings will be published in journal Nature on Monday. The study followed 500,000 women and children between 2007 and 2012.In 2,200 cases, mothers said they used marijuana while pregnant, and never did other drugs, tobacco, or alcohol. The study found "an association between maternal cannabis use in pregnancy and the incidence of autism spectrum disorder in the offspring.""The incidence of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis was 4.00 per 1,000 person-years among children with exposure compared to 2.42 among unexposed children, and the fully adjusted hazard ratio was 1.51," the study showed. 771

A student at Island Park High School in Florida was suspended after the principal and other staff members saw him imitating a gun with his hands and pretending to shoot in a classroom. This happened Friday. "You shouldn't be doing something like that at all," former Island Park High School student Devan Hinton said."It's just not something to be taken lightly," Sam Sherman, who lives in Fort Myers, told Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. The principal called the Lee County Sheriff's Office to file an incident report after he saw the student "imitating a rifle with his hands and pointing it to the classroom."Another staff member described the student making "a gesture with his arm simulating as if he was firing a weapon into the classroom."A third staff member said the student "stood in the classroom doorway and made a machine gun style pose with his arms pretending to shoot at the classroom.""That isn't OK. With everything going on, that's not something to joke about. That's lives in someone's hands," Hinton said. The principal said he didn't think the student was serious but will not tolerate this behavior in school, so he suspended him. It's an action Sherman said he agrees with for the safety of the students."It's better to be preventative than wait and let it go on, and God forbid something else occur," he said. The principal of Island Park High School, Arthur Nauss, sent WFTX this statement:"I took the disciplinary action of sending the student home after I observed him pointing his finger at another student imitating that he was shooting a gun. The student pointing the finger and the student he was pointing at know each one another and were laughing at one another. There was no threat being issued but I believe it necessary to make it clear to the student, and all our students, that this is unacceptable behavior considering the recent events here in Florida. I called the student’s mother to inform her of what had occurred and let her know I would be working with the student in the future to ensure this behavior does not reoccur. When the student returns to school he will be informed that any future actions such as this one will result in a suspension or expulsion from school. I will also let him know that actions like this in the future will be reported to the appropriate authorities." 2379

A United States Customs and Border Protection officer is accused of falsely claiming to be a US citizen when he applied for the job, the Department of Justice said. According to DOJ officials, Marco Antonio De La Garza Jr., 37, of Hereford, Ariz. was charged with three counts of passport fraud and false statements on his federal law enforcement background application. The DOJ is claiming that De La Garza knowingly used a fraudulently obtained Texas birth certificate to apply for a United States passport. De La Garza is also accused of using the same birth certificate to claim US citizenship during his background check. It is unknown how US officials were unable to figure out that De La Garza's paperwork was fraudulent.  The charges stemmed from an investigation conducted by  the Department of State-Diplomatic Security Service and the Department of Homeland Security-Office of Inspector General. The DOJ claims that De La Garza was actually born in Mexico. The Associated Press confirmed that he was hired by border patrol in 2012.   1116

A sweeping overhaul of police oversight and procedures has been proposed by Democrats in response to the deaths of black Americans at the hands of law enforcement, according to a draft outline obtained by The Associated Press. The Justice in Policing Act, unveiled Monday, would limit legal protections for police, create a national database of excessive-force incidents and ban police choke holds, among other changes. It is the most ambitious changes to law enforcement sought by Congress in years.Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, which is leading the effort, said called it “transformative.”“We’re in a real moment in our country,” she said Sunday on CNN, speaking after days of massive protests set off by the death of George Floyd and other African Americans involving the police.Bass said the package from House and Senate Democrats will be bolder than any law enforcement changes of the past decade. “It is time for police culture in many departments to change,” she said. “And we believe that the legislation will make a major step forward in that direction.”The package confronts several aspects of law enforcement accountability and practices that have come under criticism, especially as more and more police violence is captured on cell phone video and shared widely across the nation, and the world. The draft document said the proposed legislation would revise the federal criminal police misconduct statute to make it easier to prosecute officers who are involved in misconduct “knowingly or with reckless disregard.”The package would also change “qualified immunity” protections for police “to enable individuals to recover damages when law enforcement officers violate their constitutional rights,” it says. The legislation seeks to provide greater oversight and transparency of police behavior in several ways. For one, it would grant subpoena power to the Justice Department to conduct “pattern and practice” investigations of potential misconduct and help states conduct independent investigations. And it would create a “National Police Misconduct Registry,” a database to try to prevent officers from transferring from one department to another with past misconduct undetected, the draft said.A long-sought federal anti-lynching bill stalled in Congress is included in the package. However, the package stops short calls by leading activists to “defund the police,” a push to dismantle or reduce financial resources to police departments that has struck new intensity in the weeks of protests since Floyd’s death.House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., a co-author with Bass and the Democratic senators, will convene a hearing on the legislation this week.It is unclear if law enforcement and the powerful police unions will back any of the proposed changes or if congressional Republicans will join the effort. At least one Republican, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, who has long pushed for a criminal justice overhaul, has said he’d like to review the package coming from Democrats. And Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has said his panel intends to hold a hearing to review use of force issues and police practices. The presumed Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, has backed a ban on chokeholds and other elements of the package.“I can’t breathe” has become a rallying cry by protesters. Floyd pleaded with police that he couldn’t breathe, echoing the same phrase Eric Garner said while in police custody in 2014 before his death.Sen. Cory Booker, a Democratic rival who had been critical of Biden during the presidential primary campaign, said he “fully” put his faith in Biden now “to be the person who could preside over this transformative change.”“This is a referendum on who we are as Americans and who we’re going to be to each other,” Booker said on NBC.Booker and fellow one-time presidential hopeful, Sen. Kamala Harris of California, are co-authors of the package in the Senate. 4018

A political action committee is putting up a billboard in a strategic place for President Trump to see when he visits Mar-a-Lago.The message will say: “Impeachment Now, Make America America Again!”According to Mad Dog PAC, they are installing the billboard along East Shannondale Road. This location is near Palm Beach International Airport and Southern Boulevard, a route the president frequently takes during his trips to the "Winter White House."According to the PAC's website, the group says the "Impeachment Now" billboard will be up from March 19 to April 15.This isn't the only one of its kind going up in the United States, Mad Dog PAC's website says they currently have other "Impeachment Now" billboards already up in Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania. One in California was on public display from Feb. 5 to March 4, says the PAC's site. The left-wing group has other politically-motivated billboards placed across the country for the 2018 mid-term elections that target Republicans. 1015
