SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves. In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara. The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. I don't want this to happen to any other families," said Barbara.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1675
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued new guidelines that could have a big impact on many international students studying in the U.S.The modifications were posted to ICE's website, outlining the new rules for students on F-1 or M-1 visas. The guidelines say students may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States and that the Department of State won't issue visas to students enrolled in programs that are fully online or allow them to enter the country. The news comes as many schools including San Diego State University and UC San Diego have moved to online only or a hybrid format because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In their modified guidelines, ICE said they had issued a temporary exemption regarding online courses for the spring and summer semesters. If a student attends a school with a hybrid model, the school must certify that the program isn't online only and that the student is only taking the minimal number of online courses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In recent weeks colorful bikes have filled the streets of San Diego. Dockless bike ridesharing companies were ready to go once the City Attorney's Office said they could operate. The city says LimeBike, Ofo, Mobike and Bird Scooter all have the proper licenses to operate here.LimeBike says in just two weeks they've logged 30,000 rides. The San Diego Bike Coalition supports the companies and believes the accessibility and affordability will help the city in its climate action plan. However, some residents have major concerns with the bikes, reporting that they're being left in the middle of sidewalks and on people's property. They've also witnessed scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to.Zack Bartlett, the general manager for LimeBike in San Diego, says they have an operations team patrolling the city 24/7 to run safety checks and reposition bikes improperly parked. He says they've invested heavily in education, safety and parking campaigns to help everyone enjoy the bikes and scooters responsibly. One of the safety videos can be viewed here.San Diego Police say because the dockless bikes and scooters are so new they don't have a way to track citations issued to individuals riding them or parking them improperly. 1316
