Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of Parkland, Florida, school shooter Nikolas Cruz, was sentenced Thursday to six months of probation for trespassing at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School earlier this month.The younger Cruz was released Thursday afternoon from the Broward County Jail.He was initially jailed on a 0,000 bond, leading his attorney to argue he was being punished because of his older brother, who killed 17 people last month at the school in one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.Under the terms of his probation, Zachary Cruz will wear a GPS monitor and must remain one mile away from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus. He is also forbidden from having any contact with victims or family members of the February 14 mass shooting.Cruz, 18, was arrested March 19 on a misdemeanor trespassing charge at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. After his arrest, the younger Cruz told police he wanted to "reflect on the school shooting and soak it in," according to an arrest report.Probation was reached as part of a plea deal in the case. Cruz, shackled and wearing a brown jumpsuit Thursday morning, pleaded no contest to trespassing.His attorney Joseph Kimok had earlier argued that the excessive bond showed Cruz was being punished for his brother's actions."He is being held because of who he is related to, not because of anything that he did," Kimok told Judge Kim Theresa Mollica.Police said he visited the campus at least three times since the school massacre.His attorney filed a motion for his client's release, calling his treatment immoral, reprehensible, unlawful and unconstitutional. With unemployment filings continuing to come in, many are unsure when or if they can pay the rent. Evictions are happening across the U.S. and experts predict it could get worse.“Most states, at this point, I would say have some sort of statewide policy in place. Although again many of those are expiring,” said Lavar Edmonds, a Research Specialist at Eviction Lab.Edmonds is talking about evictions. As state moratoriums end, the impacts on renters and landlords are unknown.“I would imagine you're looking at millions of households that are at risk of facing eviction in the coming months,” he said.The Eviction Lab has a team of researchers tracking the issue. Two years ago, they published a national database of evictions based on records. Now, they are looking at how states are handling COVID-19 and evictions.“In some places that has meant a stopping of eviction hearings,” Edmonds said. He continued to note it could also mean some places are stopping filings, others late fees, and a bunch of different rules.More than 40 million people have filed for unemployment since COVID-19 hit the U.S. according to the U.S. Labor Department. Studies show nearly 78% of renters were able to pay their April rent in the first week of the month, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council.This could be due to additional weekly payments provided by the CARES Act to those who are unemployed.“I now am on unemployment,” Desiree Kane said. “I’m concerned about that though, because the 0 a week pandemic support ends on July 31.”Back in March, Kane, a freelancer, found herself in a situation many others also experienced.“Over the course of 72 hours in the middle of March, I lost 100% of my clients and leads because of COVID,” she said. “I went from living by myself to living in an apartment where we’re splitting the rent multiple ways so that its affordable. But it’s a very small apartment and a lot of people.”Kane helped create the Colorado rent strike group on Facebook, a group calling for change with evictions and homelessness in the state. While she continues to look for a job, she fears that July 31 end date.“They’re calling it a cliff, and I very much feel that cliff,” Kane said.It's a cliff that landlords are also concerned about.“I have talked to a lot of landlords though that are worried their tenants aren't going to be able to pay their rent,” said Tom Orlando, owner of real estate firm Housing Helpers. “Business slowed down quite a bit.”While each rental situation is different, for many property owners, no rent payment means no mortgage payment.“I do see both sides. “I feel for the tenants who have lost their jobs,” Orlando said. “It’s also unfortunate for the landlord because they need to pay their mortgage. Most landlords do have a mortgage on their properties.”The Eviction Lab is now examining what states are doing to help. They rate states using a scorecard system.“Essentially a state by state look at what policies states are taking to combat evictions during the pandemic,” Edmonds said.Moving forward, the potential for evictions is unknown and varies state to state.“In 2016, we saw somewhere around 3.7 million filings, eviction filings,” Edmonds said. “I think it’s not so much a stretch to believe we’re gonna see something comparably, if not more severely, devastating for renter households.” 3361

Workers can also take buyout packages and retire.Sources say no other plants will close under the proposed contract.The union began negotiations on Monday with Ford for a new contract. There has been no work stoppage with Ford employees, a stark contrast to the 40-day work stoppage General Motors employees wagered last month.Plant closings were a major issue between GM and the UAW after the company announced it would close four plants this year. Those plants included Warren (Michigan) Transmission, Lordstown, Ohio Assembly and Detroit Hamtramck Assembly. Detroit Hamtramck will remain open, building all-electric trucks and vans. Hundreds of workers in Lordstown had to move to seven other states to continue working for GM. Workers in Warren have transferred to Flint and other plants in distant cities.The Ford UAW Council will travel to Detroit from 18 states and will vote whether to send the Tentative Agreement to the rank and file tomorrow. One resident in Sarpy County, Nebraska, reported several drones flying in unison last week."Most interesting part is that the drones were flying in the night. People don't know what they are doing there. No feedback from federal agencies, local government and no one really knows what's going on there," said Victor Huang, an assistant professor at the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska Omaha.Drones are complex and extremely advanced. They can be used for for film making, emergency services and agricultural monitoring."The drone, similar to our computer systems, it can really do a lot of things. To me, the only limitation is your imagination," Huang said.But no one, not even the Federal Aviation Administration, knows what these drones are doing except that they're flying in a pattern, they're large and there's many of them."They don't know if it's illegal or not because right now there's no way of knowing what is up there," KMTV pilot Justin Enos said.Based on flight patterns and altitude, experts believe it could be some sort of agricultural monitoring. Regardless, the fact that no one can account for them is frightening residents. Some have even talked about shooting the drones down, but that's not a good idea. The mystery drones are reportedly up to six feet in length. If the drones happen to weigh more than 55 pounds, they technically could be considered to be aircraft."If that's a legal registered drone, if you shoot it down, you are essentially shooting an aircraft down. So that is definitely illegal," Huang said."Registered or not, it's going to be dangerous. The batteries on these things are very flammable," Enos said.Enos believes if it's agricultural information the people behind the drones are after, the general public shouldn't be too worried."I think people are concerned, especially people that aren't familiar with drones and the technology," Enos said.The Nebraska State Patrol tweeted Monday that they are working with several sheriff's offices, local police departments and federal authorities to figure out who is behind the drone activity.The FAA has also stated they are aware of the sightings and are investigating.This story was originally published 2217
