Growing mental health issues among college students were already a concern. Now, schools are preparing for what comes next in the fall, because of both the pandemic and also the renewed attention on racism in our country.About 24% of college students were diagnosed with or treated for anxiety problems last year, according to a study by the American College Health Association. That's up from about 10% a decade earlier. She says schools have already shifted to doing more remote telehealth sessions for mental health. But it has been a challenge in some places because of licensing across state lines.A lot of states have done waivers to allow this. Himmel is concerned about when states of emergency are lifted, and these waivers won't be there anymore. She says it will also be important to focus particularly on freshmen.“One of the things that I think builds camaraderie, builds enthusiasm and energy for students is that bonding with fellow students,” said Himmel. “We're very social in terms of our humanness and we need each other and so it's very important to really look at physical distancing, not social distancing and create social caveats for students to connect.”Counseling staff at Howard University tell the Wall Street Journal they're planning an online program for first year students to address this issue of a freshman year without the typical experiences.Counseling staff members at Tulsa Community College say they're doing trauma training now to be prepared to help students.At Pace University, they've been doing online mental wellness workshops for students. 2075

GERMANY — Bayer plans to slash thousands of jobs as part of a corporate overhaul following its acquisition of Monsanto.The chemicals and pharmaceuticals group said it would cut 12,000 jobs out of its global workforce of 118,000 by the end of 2021. A significant number of reductions will be made in its home market of Germany.More than 4,000 jobs will go at the company's crop sciences division, a consequence of Bayer's acquisition of US rival Monsanto earlier this year.Bayer (BAYRY) spent over billion buying Monsanto. (AP) — Southern California authorities say a man who came to the rescue of people in a burning mobile home was found dead in the wreckage.The fire erupted early Saturday morning in the Highland area of San Bernardino County.Cal Fire says arriving firefighters found four occupants had been evacuated from the mobile home but the rescuer perished.The county coroner's office says the body was found in the debris after the flames were extinguished.The coroner's office did not immediately identify the victim, but family members told KTLA-TV he was 25-year-old Albert Madrid.His sister, Melissa Enriquez, says her brother chose to go in and help, and she hopes he is remembered for that. 711

HARAHAN, La. — In Kimberly Broussard’s kitchen, there are layers upon layers of love.“I love to cook,” she said. “It's just yummy and it's full of cheese and it's gooey.”Broussard is in the midst of her new weekly tradition: making lasagna for someone she’s never met.“The thing weighs about six pounds. It’s pretty heavy,” she said.Broussard is a volunteer with Lasagna Love.“Food is love,” she said.It’s a program that began during the pandemic, in the kitchen of founder Rhiannon Menn.“I remember just feeling so helpless and watching people around me lose jobs, lose child care,” Menn said.So, the San Diego mom offered to make a meal for anyone in need in her area.“I posted to some local mom’s groups on Facebook, 'Hey, you know if you're struggling, whatever that looks like for you-- if it's financial, if it's emotional, if you're immunocompromised and can't go to the grocery store--my daughter and I are making extra meals. Like, please let us bring you dinner.' And people said yes,” she said.With that, Lasagna Love was born as people contacted Menn to ask if they could help, too. The registered nonprofit now has “Lasagna Mama and Papa” volunteers in all 50 states, with a website where you can request a meal or offer to make one.“I'm just so inspired and a little bit in awe of how many people there are that want to be part of this, spreading kindness,” Menn said.Back in Kimberly Broussard’s Louisiana kitchen, her latest lasagna will soon be ready to be dropped off to a family in need. Good Samaritans and authorities rescued a couple in their 70s whose vehicle crashed into a Long Island canal following a collision with another vehicle Monday.Police say it happened when a Ford pickup truck and a Subaru were involved in a motor vehicle crash at Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, New York. When the Subaru backed up following the crash, police say it collided with a Mercury.The Mercury crashed through a fence and fell into a canal.Video shows the moment the car was partially submerged in the water.Five good Samaritans and two Suffolk County police officers jumped into the water to rescue the couple.Joseph Abitabile, 78, was driving the Mercury. He was rescued from the vehicle, along with his wife, Delores, 76, who was unconscious.An off-duty Lake Success police officer administered CPR, restoring the woman's pulse and breathing back to normal.The Abitabiles, one good Samaritan, the two Suffolk County officers and the driver of the Subaru were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
