At 16 years old, Gabe Richards has been working hard to get good grades.He's secured straight As while being a part of the special education program at Marysville High School in Michigan.But, after getting invited to be honored at an academic awards ceremony Monday night, Gabe said he was disappointed to be told at the event that his invite was a mistake."We were really excited and don't get the chance to celebrate achievements all the time," said his mother Stefanie Grassel.Grassel said the faculty did apologize and acknowledge they mistakenly sent an invitation letter.However, as a mother, Grassel said she wants to see the policy changed to become more inclusive."It sends the message that they are less than a general education student, and that's wrong," she added.Richards also told us he feels disappointed after what happened. District superintendent Shawn Whiteman refused to do an interview in response to what happened. Instead, he issued the following statement addressing the matter:"The criteria for students to receive the distinguished “Academic Award” from Marysville High School are a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 and that they are enrolled in a certain amount of academic-based classes.After speaking with our high school principal, it was evident that a mistake was made when identifying students for this award, due to the fact that a letter was sent home inviting a student to the ceremony who didn’t meet the full criteria.It is clear that the high school made an error in identifying students for this year’s award and we respectfully apologize for any grief this has caused.  Because of this, we will be taking corrective action so that this does not happen again in the future." 1768

As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, researchers say it is important to track how the coronavirus mutates because it could affect the efficacy of a vaccine.Like all living cells, viruses evolve their chemical make-up changes. In viruses like the flu, that happens frequently, which is why every year there is a new vaccine to treat whatever strain is expected to circulate. With COVID-19, however, those mutations happen much slower, according to research out of Arizona State University.“One of the things we’re still keeping an eye on is the evolution of this virus because that virus is still around in the community,” said Dr. Efrem Lim, an assistant professor at ASU. “Everyone is coming in blind to this. This is a novel virus. This isn’t something we have seen before.”In March, Arizona State University played host to our country’s fourth COVID-19 case. As soon as it was detected, Dr. Lim started studying how the virus mutates and sent his findings to the World Health Organization. It's something that still continues to this day.“This virus, overall, mutates pretty slowly, which is a good thing,” said Dr. Lim. “However, we can have instances where the virus can have very large, dramatic, mutations, such as deletions in the genome.”While rare, Dr. Lim says those mutations can be significant as it changes how the virus acts inside the body.Currently, scientists are focusing much of their efforts on identifying ways to eliminate the function of the spike protein in COVID-19, as it is the way the virus binds to our cells and infects them (spike proteins are the stalks that protrude from the center of the virus that make it so recognizable).“It is very good news that the virus is not changing rapidly,” said ASU virologist Dr. Brenda Hogue. “We will have to see over time, as the virus continues to circulate, as we put a vaccine into play, whether or not there will be any issues.”Dr. Lim says right now there does not appear to be any issues because the virus mutates slowly, but he adds it could adapt to a vaccine once one begins to circulate.He says more testing needs to be done to determine that, however. 2140

AURORA, Colo. — The dog that was used by an Aurora, Colo. couple for sex acts was deemed not safe for adoption and was euthanized Tuesday.Jenee Shipman, manager at the Aurora Animal Shelter, wrote in a letter to the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office that the dog, which was a male Akita mix named Bubba, was not a safe candidate for adoption or transfer based on its history and behavior in the kennel.“The dog has exhibited unpredictable behavior, and shows signs of aggression towards veterinary services staff, volunteers, community service workers and staff members that the dog is not especially familiar with (staff who clean, feed, provide enrichment and treats daily),” the letter reads.Michael Bryant, the senior public information officer with the city of Aurora, confirmed that the dog had been humanely euthanized Tuesday after the couple’s sentencing.Court documents say that the animal's abuse occurred between July 1, 2016 and March 27, 2017. In March, Janette Solano, 49, and Frederick Manzanares, 51, were charged with animal cruelty and accused of having sex with their dog in a backyard motorhome.Solano, the ex-girlfriend of Manzanares, pleaded guilty to cruelty and animal neglect on July 30, according to court documents. Per her plea agreement, her three subsequent charges to cruelty and neglect of animals were dismissed by the district attorney. Manzanares, 51, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty. As we focus on getting kids safely back to school this year, Nashville-area builders are trying to figure out how to limit the impact of potential future pandemic years down the road, which may require permanently changing the look of new schools, offices, and hospitals."Yes, we are definitely seeing clients ask questions," said Matthew Griffith, an architect with Gould Turner Group."Things like the materials we specify, how cleanable they are, rounded corners in rooms and antimicrobial surfaces," Griffith said.Griffith says with the thought of a future pandemic in mind — segmented spaces could be the norm for new schools."I think you will see a big focus on true flexible space, have demountable partitions and movable walls to where it can be segmented or more individualized on an as-needed basis," Griffith said.And that idea extends beyond school buildings. Griffith says the same can apply to hospitals and other office spaces."I think it's going to be common in a lot of designs to have dedicated spaces for temperature checks and things of that nature," Griffith said.A large building's heating and cooling system will likely be a large focus, according to Griffith. Rather than circulating air throughout the whole building, individual units may be able to keep the air within smaller areas in case of an outbreak.Schools have been through similar kinds of building trends before. In the early 2000s, it was all about security and hindering active shooters.
