The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation now projects that 68,000 American lives would be saved between now and March 1 by near universal wearing of masks. The IHME released the updated model on Thursday. The IHME’s coronavirus projections have been frequently cited in the past by the White House’s coronavirus task force. The group uses state data along with other metrics to create projections on the number of coronavirus-related deaths throughout the US.Among the projections released by the IHME, the number of active hospitalizations in the United States tied to the coronavirus is expected to double by mid-January.The COVID Tracking Project, a project led by The Atlantic, shows that current coronavirus-related hospitalizations hurdled the 60,000 mark in the US on Tuesday for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has more than doubled in the last six weeks throughout the US.By Friday, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 neared 70,000.A number of hospital systems in the US are nearing capacity already. And the IHME’s director Chris Murray warns that his estimates are on the conservative side.“The fall winter surge, you know, driven by people going indoors, having more indoor contact and, you know, it's what we've seen play out in Europe and now we're catching up,” Murray told CNN. “So we're seeing the huge exponential rise in cases, deaths starting to follow suit. We're already at over a thousand deaths a day, quite a bit more than that. So our numbers that see us getting to, you know, 2,200 deaths a day in mid-January, are perhaps conservative, and that does require 33 states to put in mandates. So, absolutely it can go much worse than that."Murray’s projection forecasts roughly an additional 200,000 coronavirus between now and March 1. The estimate drops to 132,000 if masks are nearly all situations outside of the household.By March 1, it’s possible that a number of high-risk Americans and health care workers will be vaccinated. The White House said on Friday that it intends on distributing 20 million vaccine doses by the end of December, and 25 to 30 million doses for each subsequent month. The vaccines would come in two doses. 2276

The University of San Diego's head men's basketball coach Lamont Smith was arrested Sunday in the Bay Area and is facing three domestic violence charges, according to public records released by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department.Allen Lamont Smith, 42, was arrested at Oakland International Airport prior to the USD basketball team's flight back to San Diego following a 64-61 win over the University of San Francisco in last night's regular season finale.Officers were dispatched to the team hotel near Union Square late last night on reports of a domestic violence disturbance. The victim told police she was intimately involved with Smith. The Trump administration supports reopening schools this fall, in addition to sending 125 million reusable masks to school districts they released new guidance this week for districts to reopen safely. The Schools Should Reopen Safely policy is based on three assumed facts by the administration: that prolonged school closures cause harm, children are at low risk for serious illness from Covid-19, and that educating children is a top national priority.President Trump attended a discussion Wednesday about getting children back to school where the policy was discussed with administration leaders, medical experts and educators. Some of the speakers referenced how the coronavirus pandemic has provided an experiment for virtual learning.“But the virtual learning is not like being in a classroom, and we’ve learned that, I think, very strongly — in almost all cases. People thought for a long time that would be the answer but it’s — that’s not the answer. The answer is an old-fashioned one,” President Trump said. The recommendations encourage the use of masks and social distancing, as well as educating students, teachers and staff about Covid-19 symptoms. They follow guidance released earlier this year from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The document lists eight recommendations for schools:Ensure all students, teachers, and staff understand the symptoms of COVID-19 and its risk factors.Require all students, teachers, and staff to self-assess their health every morning before coming to school; if they are symptomatic they should consult their physician.Encourage frequent handwashing or hand sanitizing during the school day, beginning upon entrance to the school, by ensuring that handwashing facilities are widely available throughout the school.Minimize large indoor group gatherings; hold large gatherings outdoors whenever possible.Maintain high standards of hygiene and ventilation within all classrooms, including keeping windows and doors open and running fans and AC units whenever possible.Require students, teachers, and staff to socially distance around high-risk individuals.Encourage the use of masks when social distancing is not possible.Liberally post instructions regarding hygiene and social distancing around the school. There are also recommendations for high-risk teachers and students, including giving these individuals options to stay home.“Provide high-risk students, or students who have high-risk family members, the choice to stay home and engage in distance learning,” the guidance states. The policy is a set of recommendations and not mandatory for schools to reopen. States and districts are able to make their own decisions. 2694

The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced the approval of?the first generic version of EpiPen.The auto-injector pen delivers the drug epinephrine to patients experiencing a severe allergic reaction that, if untreated, could develop into the life-threatening condition of anaphylaxis. The medication is delivered into a muscle as a single dose, like a shot, through an injector pen with a spring.Allergies from food, bug bites, medications and latex can cause life-threatening reactions. The newly approved generic is made by Teva Pharmaceuticals and offers an alternative for patients who, until now, have been able to use only the brand-name EpiPen made by Mylan. It is approved in a smaller dose for children, as well. There are two other brand products on the market for a severe allergic reaction: Adrenaclick and Auvi-Q.The newly approved option made by Teva is the only approved non-brand option and can be substituted only for Mylan's EpiPen."Today's approval of the first generic version of the most-widely prescribed epinephrine auto-injector in the U.S. is part of our longstanding commitment to advance access to lower cost, safe and effective generic alternatives once patents and other exclusivities no longer prevent approval," FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement announcing the approval. In recent years, Mylan came under fire for a price increase that put the product out of reach for many who needed to keep the drug on hand. 1488

The release of three US nationals currently detained in North Korea is "imminent," according to an official with knowledge of the ongoing negotiations. The official told CNN the North Koreans made the decision to free the Americans two months ago, and that North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho had proposed their release during his visit to Sweden in March.US officials insisted at the time that their release "must not be related or used to loosen the main issue of denuclearization," the source said. 519
