OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Dozens of people packed a room at Surfside Tap Room Thursday night for a well-known patron believed to have been killed in his home.John Roth, 77, was a regular at the bar. More than 50 people came to celebrate his life and drink a final toast.“He served in Vietnam, he was a topographer,” one of his friends, Tom Andrews said. “He crawled through rice paddies to make sure the maps had the right elevations.”“We had some intense conversations, but we would always end up laughing,” he added.Roth’s wife came home and found him dead Tuesday. Police say he suffered trauma to his upper body. His wife told police the garage door was open.RELATED: Oceanside police investigate death of 77-year-old manPolice are investigating Roth's death, calling it suspicious. “It was a really bad thing what happened to him,” said another friend, Chris Ulrey. “I called him 'pops' for like the past four and a half years. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A second search for Black victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is to begin in a cemetery. Forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield is assisting in the search and is a descendant of a massacre survivor. She said the goal is to identify victims, notify their descendants and shed light on the violence. A similar excavation in the cemetery in July found no remains. The violence happened on May 31 and June 1 in 1921, when white residents attacked Tulsa’s Black Wall Street. An estimated 300 were killed and 800 wounded. The area that had been a cultural and economic mecca for African Americans was decimated. 643

One of the most iconic signs of the holiday season is coming earlier this year. The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle Campaign is kicking off now. It normally starts around Thanksgiving. The pandemic has created several new challenges though.“The Salvation Army has seen an extraordinary increase in the amount of need in America,” said Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army expects requests for assistance over the holidays will increase 155%. That means helping an additional 4 million families. On top of that, less people are going into stores on-foot. Also, less people are carrying spare change because of an national coin shortage. You can donate online or by texting KETTLE to 91999. The money stays in your community.“So, individuals are always giving to their neighbors,” said Hodder. “When they give to the Salvation Army, 82 cents of every dollar that comes in will go directly to those in need.”The Red Kettle funds help families pay for rent, food, clothes and toys.Donations have been steadily declining over the last few years. You can visit RescueChristmas.org to see the ways to donate and volunteer. 1173

On Sunday afternoon, a gunman stormed a bar/arcade in Jacksonville, Florida, killing people attending a Madden NFL video game tournament.Tournaments such as the one in Jacksonville are part of a growing global trend — eSports, or competitive video gaming. What are eSports?eSports is the broad term that encompasses any sort of competitive video gaming. The tournaments and leagues are often hosted by video game studios — EA Sports, the maker of Madden NFL 19, was hosting the tournament in Jacksonville on Sunday. Early eSports tournaments focused on niche games and attracted mainly hard-core gamers as spectators, but that didn't stop spectators from turning out in droves. eSports has sold out arenas in China, Japan and even in the US as spectators watched the best of the best play games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends and Overwatch. But in the past few years, eSports has been going mainstream. In 2018, the NBA launched the NBA 2K League — a season-long competition featuring gamers playing an NBA video game for teams affiliated with actual NBA franchises. In addition, more than 60 colleges and universities throughout the country have eSports teams, some of which offers scholarships to gamers.Where are people watching eSports? The popularity of eSports has exploded in recent years, thanks to the streaming service Twitch. The website allows gamers to live-stream their gaming sessions, and some of the top-ranked gamers play in front of millions of viewers who live stream from their homes.Swedish gamer PewDiePie has more than 72 million subscribers combined between his Twitch and YouTube channels —despite making controversial comments in past months.Another gamer, Ninja, regularly gains 50,000 viewers per stream. Reports indicate he makes 0,000 annually by playing games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.Sunday's mass shooting in Jacksonville was briefly streamed live on Twitch. Video captured the sounds of gunfire through the players' headsets before the stream was interrupted.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @alexhider. 2157
